You will then visit the Prince of Wales Museum Heritage Centre to learn more about the tragic events that shaped the city. Your local guide will share personal stories about life in the city during this terrible time. Yellowknife was saved by the discovery of diamonds, which you will discuss on tour as well. You will also talk about the impact of mining on the lives of the indigenous population.

Visit Great Slave Lake (Tu Nehthè), one of the largest lakes in the world and deepest in North America, and learn the art of traditional ice fishing. Indigenous guides will show you how they set fishing nets and tell you interesting stories about the cultural significance of fishing in their tradition. You can even try your hand at ice fishing in a heated hut! After the tour, head to the culture camp, where you will prepare fresh fish and cook a traditional dish with bannock (a type of flatbread) and bush tea. A truly authentic experience!

Look forward to a personal and educational tour of indigenous culture and history with Joe, the Dene guide and Aurora hunter himself. In two hours, you will learn more about the traditional life of the Dene as Joe recounts his childhood with his grandparents. The tour includes a walk through the indigenous exhibition at the Prince of Wales Heritage Museum, where Joe interprets the exhibits in relation to his life as an indigenous person in the modern world. You will also gain insights into the impact of the Residential School Tragedy on Indigenous people and their challenges on the path to healing and reviving their traditional way of life and culture. The tour concludes with a Q&A session with Joe, who will also talk about cultural protocols to promote respectful interaction with indigenous people.

In this creative workshop, you will have the opportunity to craft one of four traditional indigenous handicrafts: a dreamcatcher, a mini drum, a medicine wheel, or beaded earrings. While doing so, you will not only learn how to create your own work of art, but also the meaningful stories and teachings associated with each piece. No prior knowledge is required, so anyone can participate. In between, you can enjoy traditional fry bread, warm herbal tea, and Canadian maple cookies.
