What we mean by Sustainability
Taking Responsibility where the World is most Vulnerable
Climate-Conscious Travel
Travel to polar regions involves CO₂ emissions. Long distances and limited infrastructure cannot be covered without emissions. We state this reality clearly and rely on transparent decision-making. Where feasible and appropriate, we promote lower-emission travel options such as rail services operated by SJ in Sweden, VR in Finland, and rail routes in Norway. These options can significantly reduce emissions while enabling a slower, more considered journey. For many destinations, flights or expedition vessels remain necessary. In such cases, we focus on emission reduction within the existing system. For example, on certain routes Direct Flights can lower emissions by avoiding transfers and additional take-off and landing cycles. We avoid blanket claims of climate neutrality and instead present options, impacts, and limitations clearly.
The heyHusky Corporate Forest
Since 2025, we have been planting our own heyHusky corporate forest each year together with our premium partner PRIMAKLIMA e.V. in Saxony, Germany. This long-term secured initial afforestation is designed as a climate-resilient mixed forest and intended to deliver lasting impact. Site-appropriate native tree species create resilient ecosystems that bind carbon, promote biodiversity, and fulfil functions such as soil protection and water regulation. The project includes planting, maintenance, monitoring, and replanting in the event of losses. Over the long term, the areas serve as habitats for wildlife and as local recreation areas for people, contributing structurally to the long-term compensation of a portion of our customers’ emissions. Visit our forest on Google Maps or on site.
Animal Welfare and Respect for People and Nature
Animal welfare and respectful treatment of nature and local communities are central criteria in our partner selection. Our consistent focus on polar regions enables a deep network of guides, local staff, and operators with many years of on-site experience. Many of our team members have worked as guides themselves and are familiar with operational realities first-hand. This knowledge is complemented by insights from local personnel who understand actual standards beyond self-presentation. We part ways with partners who do not meet our requirements for animal welfare or safety, even when this involves economic disadvantages. In the field of polar expeditions, we exclusively arrange voyages on small ships operated by companies that are members of AECO in the Arctic or IAATO in the Antarctic. These associations enforce binding rules on environmental protection, safety, visitor management, and conduct ashore, and form the basis of responsible expedition travel for us.
Shipping of Packages and Parcels
Our physical products, such as the annual calendar, the heyHusky Northern Lights Package, and the heyHusky Expedition Package, are shipped worldwide. Assembly, packaging, and preparation are carried out in cooperation with Elbe Werkstätten GmbH in Hamburg. There, people with disabilities are offered qualified jobs and long-term professional opportunities. Elbe Werkstätten provide vocational training, employment, and rehabilitation across a range of working models. Our collaboration is long-term and firmly integrated into our supply chain. Products are carefully assembled and packed to meet high quality standards. Packaging is reduced and materials are selected deliberately; each parcel is packed by hand so that the wool hat protects the book from damage without the use of plastic.
