In the right place at the right time
The timing of your trip is not unimportant in terms of observing the Northern Lights. Solar winds, which are responsible for the phenomenon, encounter the Earth’s magnetic field all year round; the exchange of energy between the charged particles and our earth atoms takes place all the time. So even in the summer, there is a very special light show high up in the sky. But watching this show in the summertime is unfortunately impossible, as it is simply too bright at this time of the year to see the glow. Only in the winter months, the perfect darkness is available. The Aurora borealis can be seen in the months of September to April – most often in the mid-winter months of December, January and February. The best way to spend the day during the winter months is to glide through the wilderness on a husky sled, and the best way to spend the night is to admire the breathtaking light show in the skies above before relaxing in the sauna. In the “Northern Lights Oval” (otherwise known as the “Aurora Oval”), which extends over the northern and southern hemisphere of the polar regions, the phenomenon occurs almost daily. The dance show of the lights can occur at any time of the day, but here too, it must be dark enough to see the Northern Lights. The main requirements for a breathtaking show during your Northern Lights trip are clear weather conditions. If the night sky is covered with thick clouds, the view of the Northern Lights will be blocked. However, you should not despair because of cloudy skies and give up on the search. This is because the clouds can move on quickly and with a little luck, you will still be able to catch the show! The general rule is: the longer you travel, the higher your chances of seeing the Northern Lights.
