Winter Holiday in Ruka-Kuusamo: the Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Kuusamo and Arriving In at the Resort
Upon arrival at Kuusamo Airport, a short transfer brings you to the resort in just about nine minutes. Once you have checked into your Aurora Room, there is time to unpack, relax, and explore the grounds. The day ends with a three-course dinner, which also starts your meal plan for the trip.

Day 2: Husky Safari and Time for Yourself
After breakfast, you set off on an 8 km husky safari - directly from the resort with no long transfer needed. Sharing a sled in pairs, you take turns driving along the route. Afterwards, there is time to get to know the dogs better, followed by a cozy gathering around the open fire with warm drinks, snacks, and stories about the huskies. The afternoon is yours to enjoy: for instance, take the sled provided in your room to the resort's sledding hill. After dinner, a walk along the illuminated forest path is a great option - or keep an eye on the night sky to spot the Northern Lights instead.

Day 3: Out on the Snowmobile
Well-fueled after breakfast, you head out on a guided snowmobile safari through the snow-covered countryside. By default, two people share one snowmobile - if you prefer to drive solo, a single snowmobile can be booked for an extra fee. During a break with hot drinks and snacks, you switch places along the way so everyone gets a turn ti drive. The adternoon is free for your own plans: borrow complimentary snowshoes or cross-country skis, or warm up with snacks in the kota. The day finishes with dinner as usual.

Day 4: Departure or Time for your own Discoveries
Depending on your booked trip length, the transfer takes you back to the airport today - or you can enjoy another free day in the North. Spend the time as you wish, explore the surroundings, or choose from optional activities listed under "Extras" (please book in advance). Breakfast and dinner are included again today.

Day 5: Farewell to Finland
After breakfast, it is time to check out of your Aurora Room. With unforgettable memories in tow, your transfer brings you back to Kuusamo Airport, where you will start your journey home. Meal service ends today with breakfast.
Accommodation:
You will stay in one of the resort's Aurora Rooms. Equipped with two beds, a sofa bed, a bathroom, a kitchenette, and underfloor heating, it offers all the essentials comforts. The main highlight is the glass roof directly above the beds: enjoy the calm view of the sky and, with a bit of luck, watch the Northern Lights right from your bed.
The Lumo Resort is set in a magical winter landscape of snow-covered trees and rolling white hills. Just a few steps from your accommodation, the restaurant welcomes you with beautiful panoramic views. Away from the scheduled tours, there is plenty to do on site: take a stroll or ski along the illuminated forest path, race down the sledding hill, or explore the surroundings at your own pace on the marked snowshoe trail network. For cozy, relaxing moments, enjoy the pleasant warmth of the sauna, or gather around the open fire in the traditional kota with cocoa, coffee and pancakes. A resort-owned reindeer farm completes the experience on site.

Important information:
To drive a snowmobile, you must be at least 18 years old and hold a valid driver's license. Children aged 6 to 14 ride comfortable in the guide's sled. For the husky tour, the guides on site decide bades on the child's age, size, and physical condition whether they can drive the sled themselves or join as passenger.

The order of tours and activities within this itinerary may vary due to weather conditions and other contributing factors that must be taken into account by the guides when planning your tour. You will receive the exact order of activities once you arrive on site. The far north can have fluctuating and unpredictable weather with very strong temperature differences. The safety of guests and animals comes first, and for this reason, we reserve the right to change the itinerary and intensity of activities if and when needed. This involves both adjustments due to insufficient snow (meaning we cannot drive the sleds) or too much snow (snowstorms and extreme cold can cause accidents and various other problems). The required adjustments and fallback options in rare cases are based on the day-to-day conditions and can be compensated by shorter or longer daily stages, alternative accommodations, or even single day trips. In extremely rare cases we may organise alternative transport (ie. cars, quad bikes, etc). Feel free to contact us if you would like a more detailed assessment of this tour and travel period. Measuring 28 m², the Aurora Spa Room is ideal for couples, families or small groups looking for that special something. Enjoy the breathtaking view through the glass ceiling and get up close to the Nordic sky - with a bit of luck, you might even catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights. The room features a twin or double bed, as well as a double sofa bed that can accommodate two children or one adult. A seating area invites you to relax, and as a special highlight, a private outdoor hot tub is at your disposal. The bathroom features a shower and toilet, as well as a beauty set, towels, and a hairdryer and the small kitchenette comes equipped with a microwave, fridge, coffee machine, kettle, and a tea and coffee making set. Also available are a smart TV, internet, minibar, desk, slippers, bathrobes, air conditioning, an air source heat pump and underfloor heating. For a bit of fun on the hills, a sled is included, or you can visit the nearby reindeer instead. You will also find the perfect conditions for exploring on your own.

The Panorama Suite (available from December 2026) is a modern luxury retreat in the heart of the Arctic wilderness. Large panoramic windows bring the snow-covered landscape - and, with a bit of luck, the Northern Lights - right into your living space. Scandinavian design, warm natural materials and a carefully considered lighting scheme create a calm and elegant atmosphere. Relax in the freestanding bathtub with its stunning views or enjoy the outdoor jacuzzi beneath the starry sky. The suite combines privacy, comfort and Nordic magic to create an experience for all the senses. Spanning 75 m², the suite features two bedrooms (2x twin or double bed, 2x double sofa beds), two bathrooms, a living room, a kitchen and a fireplace. On this guided excursion, you'll visit a larger reindeer farm near your resort, just a 7-minute drive away. There, you'll receive a comprehensive introduction to reindeer herding and the animals' importance to local life. You'll also have the opportunity to get up close to the reindeer and learn about their daily routines. A particular highlight is the approximately 1.5 km reindeer sleigh ride, allowing you to enjoy the winter scenery at a leisurely pace. The Ruka Coaster is Finland's first alpine coaster and a fun optional activity in Ruka. On the 767-meter track, you will whiz through the winter landscape, enjoying beautiful views of the surrounding fells. Depending on your mood, you can reach speeds of up to 40 km/h - you control the pace yourself, as you can regulate the speed at any time with your own brake lever. Let's meet Santa Claus himself! Your adventure begins with a toboggan run, accompanied by elves—the perfect opportunity to have some fun. Afterwards, warm up with sausages and hot drinks before finally heading to Santa's house. Reindeer Farm Visit by Snowmobile

Combine a snowmobile ride across the lake with a visit to the reindeer. You’ll set off right next to the restaurant, travelling in pairs on snowmobiles to a reindeer farm, before switching to a traditional reindeer sleigh. Look forward to a sleigh ride of around 1.5 km, as well as a tour of the farm grounds. Whilst there, you’ll also visit the ancient corral, meet hundreds of reindeer and have the chance to feed the animals with lichen. Of course, there’ll be plenty of time to take photos amongst the reindeer. During the visit, you’ll hear stories about reindeer herding and daily life on the farm. Afterwards, you’ll return by snowmobile along the same route. The total duration is approximately 2 to 2.5 hours, of which around 30 to 45 minutes is spent snowmobiling. Children aged 6–14 ride in the sledge, which is pulled by the guide’s snowmobile, and receive a discount. For an additional charge, you can participate as single driver on the snowmobile. Husky Safaris

Directly at the resort, you’ll find husky trails which you can explore for yourself on a dog sled safari. You can choose between a 3 km, 7 km or a longer wilderness route of approx. 10–20 km, depending on the conditions. Besides the dog-sled ride, you’ll also get to know the dogs and spend time with them, always accompanied by a guide. The total duration is approximately 1.5 hours for the 3 km safari, approximately 2 hours for the 7 km safari and approximately 2.5–3 hours for the longer wilderness route. The time spent on the sled is shorter than the time spent getting to know the huskies. The trail starts from the resort, just a short walk from the restaurant and accommodation. However, the resort also works in partnership with other local husky farms. Transfers are always included for tours taking place there.

Meet friendly reindeer up close at the resort’s own small reindeer farm and learn more about the lives of local reindeer herders. You’ll also discover the role reindeer play in Arctic culture. The mini snowmobile track is a short route laid out within the resort grounds, designed specifically to offer a safe and straightforward driving experience. The track is fenced off, making it particularly easy to navigate, so you can concentrate fully on the thrill of snowmobiling. You can also explore the marked trail at your own pace and take a short spin through the wintry surroundings. This makes the activity particularly well-suited to anyone trying a snowmobile for the first time or simply looking for a quick adventure without having to sign up for a long safari.
