Husky Sled Dog Course in Alaska: The Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival
You will be welcomed at the airport in Fairbanks. During the transfer to the remotely situated husky farm you will already get a first impression of the impressive Alaskan landscape. From a vantage point you can overlook the entire area of the Minto Flats Nature Reserve, which you will explore with your sled dog team on endless trails over the next few days. Arriving at the lodge, you will get to know all the participants, as well as the tour guides, during a dinner together.
Day 2-12: Basic knowledge husky sledding
Already on the next day you will get a briefing about the structure and procedures of the kennel. You will be involved in all activities around the dogs from the beginning. You will get to know the dogs and the equipment, receive training in the handling of the dogs, as well as the driving technique and already explore the first miles of trail on the dog sled. The Nenana Sleddog College is suitable for young and old, beginners and advanced. Your sled dog adventure is like an active sports course that can range from easy to challenging, depending on your preferences. Together with your husky team of 4-6 dogs, you will spend the next few days exploring Alaska's spectacular winter landscape. The trail system will take you over frozen lakes, rivers, through deep snow covered forests and past Indian villages. With a little luck, tours through Alaska's subarctic wilderness offer the chance to see moose and wolves in their natural habitat. The vast, wild country of Alaska with its endless expanses offers unforgettable impressions. If you are interested, you have the possibility to take part in the training of the young dogs and the racing team. Under the guidance of experienced mushers the tours are planned individually in the team. In order to offer our dogs and guests the highest possible level of safety and enjoyment at all times, the current weather conditions, snow conditions as well as the skills and experience of the participants are always included in the tour planning. For each tour 2 rest days are reserved.
During the tours there are only a few "stops and goes". Through the long rides you will experience the fascination of true mushing. The experienced guides are always available to advise and accompany you on the wonderful trails north of the Alaska Range. The team consists of state certified mountain guides and UIMLA mountain guides. These are the highest guiding qualifications in the world when it comes to mountaineering, ski touring or trekking. So you can be sure that you will be excellently looked after. Also rest days will be arranged together. You will have the opportunity to visit the Native American village of Nenana and Fairbanks, visit museums and pubs, or just relax and cuddle with the dogs. Other activities such as snowmobile tours, ice fishing, skiing or visiting a reindeer ranch are also possible.

Requirements
The dog sledding course is suitable for everyone from young to old. You don't need to be a top athlete, but you need to be willing to lend a hand and enjoy working with sled dogs and go winter camping. Due to the very small group size (maximum of four people), the individual wishes and questions of the participants can be optimally addressed.
Accommodation in Alaska
During your Alaskan stay, you will stay either in a log cabin or in the associated lodge in double or shared rooms. In the cozy wilderness lodge, the living room, kitchen and bathroom/shower with toilet are shared. Hot and cold running water, oil and wood heating, WLAN (limited use) as well as towels and hairdryer are provided.
Catering
After taking care of the dogs in the morning, the day begins with a rich breakfast together. During the day snacks as well as homemade cakes are available. In the evening, good and healthy food is cooked directly on site. Individual food is available by prior arrangement. Restaurant visits (about 4x during the trip) are not included.
Other optional activities
On rest days you can visit Nenana, about 16 km away, and Fairbanks, about 70 km away, visit museums, stop at pubs or relax at the husky farm and cuddle with the dogs. Or perhaps you'll opt for a day of skiing or take a wildly romantic snowshoe hike in the lodge's immediate area. Snowmobile tours, an ice fishing trip or a visit to a reindeer ranch are also possible.

The safety of our guests and animals is our top priority on all of our tours. The far north can have fluctuating and unpredictable weather with very strong temperature differences. Whilst we strive to follow the planned trails as closely as possible, we reserve the right to change the order of activities, the route of safaris, and the intensity of the excursions should the needs of our guests or animals necessitate it, or if the weather conditions compromise our pre-planned route. This involves both adjustments due to insufficient snow (meaning we cannot drive the sleds) or too much snow (snowstorms and extreme cold can cause accidents and various other problems). The required adjustments and fallback options in rare cases are based on the day-to-day conditions and can be compensated by shorter or longer daily stages, alternative accommodations, or even single day trips. In extremely rare cases we may organise alternative transport (ie. cars, quad bikes, etc). Feel free to contact us if you would like a more detailed assessment of this tour and travel period. Die Husky-Veranstaltung bei und mit Andy Hütten war ein besonderes und tolles Erlebnis. Andy Hütten mit seinen liebenswerten Ecken und Kanten gibt seine jahrzehntelangen Erfahrungen mit seinen geliebten Hunden gerne weiter. Nach einer genauen Einschulung geht es dann gleich los mit den Schlittenhunden-Ausfahrten. Es war zwar zeitweise "saukalt", ist ja Winter in Alaska , aber die schöne Landschaft mit den Schlittenhunden zu erkunden war einfach ein Traum. Beim gemeinsamen Abendessen in der superwarmen Stube gibts dann noch spannende Geschichten vom Andy. Ein Aufenthalt bei Andy in Alaska ist etwas aussergewöhnliches und kann ich nur empfehlen. Vielen Dank lieber Andy.

Also, die Kurzfassung dieses Abenteuerurlaubs würde ich bezeichnen als: kein Urlaub von der Stange. Dies durchzieht sich durch die meisten Aktivitäten und Gegebenheiten dieser Huskytour. Der „Oberguide“ ist ein Urbayer in Alaska. Sehr erfahren im Mushen, aber auch in Wandern und Klettern. Immer einen flotten Spruch auf den Lippen und eine Geschichte im Gepäck. Ein „uriger“ und sympathischer Zeitgenosse, der einem das Hundeschlittenfahren lebendig, klar, verständlich und respektvoll nahe bringt. Dabei ist seine Zuneigung zu den Hinden deutlich zu spüren. Das Wohl der Tiere stellt er dabei in den Vordergrund, was ich absolut verständlich und angebracht finde. Weiter geht es mit der Beziehung zwischen dem „Urbayern“ und seiner Freundin, die nicht von der Stange erscheint. Wenn Ihr dort hinfahrt, macht Euch ein eigenes Bild. Aber die Zuneigung zwischen den beiden ist deutlich zu spüren; das Wichtigste in einer Partnerschaft. Weiterhin war es eine tolle Verköstigung mit Frühstück, Kaffee und warmen Abendessen. Und nach einer tollen Tour durch Alaska mit tollen Hunden, schmeckt es noch einmal viel besser. Abends besteht die Möglichkeit sich über die Eindrücke auszutauschen, zu lesen oder etwas zu spielen. Letzteres kam bei uns nicht zu kurz und war mit herzlichen Lachen und Bombenstimmung verbunden. Ann-Christin und Andy haben sich in ihr Privatleben begeben, was auch völlig in Ordnung war, dennoch entging ihnen unser „Gackern“ nicht. Ein kleiner Kritikpunkt: gelegentlich kamen Gäste für eine Tour zwischendurch, um eine Tour mit den Hunden zu machen. Es wirkte etwas wie „dazwischengepackt“. Es schränkte unsere Touren nicht ein, dennoch hätte ich mir einen offeneren Umgang mit diesem Vorgehen gewünscht. Im Allgemeinen kann ich nur sagen, wer Schnee liebt, nicht alles vorgesetzt bekommen möchte, sondern sich auch um das Füttern und die Sauberkeit der Hunde kümmern möchte, ist hier genau richtig. Ich werde „meine Hunde“ und die Touren immer in schöner Erinnerung behalten. Vielleicht komme ich noch einmal wieder und werde dann hoffentlich auch Bandit, Storm, Jewel und Co., sowie Ann-Christin und Andy wiedersehen. Zum Schluss eine kleine Anregung: eine Sauna wäre toll; das einzige, was nach einer Tour gefehlt hat...
