Winter Adventure in Finland: the itinerary
Day 1: Arrival
Arrival via Kajaani train station or airport and organized transfer to your accommodation. Dinner is already waiting for you and you will receive the first information about the planned activities and adventures that lie ahead. Look forward to eventful days in the far north!
The on-site travel services begin with dinner on the first day and end with breakfast on the last day.
Day 2: Husky tour through Finland's wilderness
After breakfast, you will receive detailed instructions on how to steer and brake the dog sled. The excited huskies are then prepared for the upcoming tour and harnessed together. After that it's finally time to set off and glide through the beautiful winter landscape of Finland, over frozen lakes and through dense forests with only nature around you. You return after about 12 km and take care of the dogs. There is also plenty of time to cuddle with them. After a warm lunch, you can explore the surroundings on your own, for example with snowshoes or cross-country skis.Day 3: Snowshoe tour through one of the last primal forests in Europe
You can organize this morning according to your own wishes. Enjoy a nice long breakfast and relax a little bit or explore the surrounding area. The equipment you need like snow shoes, forest skies and kick sleds is at your disposal. At lunchtime, you go by car to a kota (Finnish barbecue hut) and enjoy a traditional lunch there. Afterwards, strap on your snowshoes as your guide will lead you on a hike through one of Europe's last primal forests, where you can admire its different vegetation and the various natural wonders. On your return, the car will be waiting to take you back to the lodge. All pictures of this partner
Day 4: Free day
Enjoy a hearty breakfast before you start the day. Today you have the opportunity to explore the surroundings on your own, for example with a kick sled, snowshoes or cross-country skis. You will find marked routes that start directly from the lodge. Lunch is served at the lodge. End the day relaxing in the sauna and don't forget to walk a few meters away from strong light sources after dark - you might be lucky and see the magical Northern Lights shining in the night sky above your head!
Day 5: Climb to the summit of Paljakka
Today is another day at your leisure. We recommend that you take a tour to the top of the old Paljakka ski resort, from where you have a wonderful 360° view. You can have the route shown to you on a map beforehand and take kick sledges or another means of transportation. Lunch awaits you at the lodge, but you can also take a picnic with you if you let your hosts know in advance. Have fun in the snow!
Day 6: On snowshoes through Scandinavia
Today you go snowshoeing to lake Iso Särkijärvi (3-4 km) where you can grill your lunch by the campfire and try your luck at ice fishing. There is also a traditional sauna on the lake, which can be heated at the group's request for a fee. If you dare, you can take a refreshing dip in the ice hole after the sauna. You can also book another husky tour instead of this excursion. End the day in a cozy atmosphere and keep your eyes open: with a bit of luck, you might catch a glimpse of the magical Northern Lights!
Day 7: Journey home
After one last breakfast and visit to the dogs, you will head to the airport or train station in Kajaani. With many unforgettable memories in your luggage, you will start your journey home today.
Accommodation:
The small Scandinavian country-style guesthouse is located in the middle of nature on the edge of the Paljakka nature reserve, far away from tourism and a meeting place for nature lovers - mainly natural food is prepared. Sauna and gym available. Accommodation in a double room with private bathroom, which contains a shower and a toilet. Single room booking (extra charge) and accommodation in a shared double room (no extra charge) possible.
Many more activities await you!
In addition to the option of booking another dog sledding tour, snowshoes, kick sleds, forest skis, cross-country skis (classic and skating) and toboggans are available to you free of charge.Important information:
The minimum age for a husky safari is 15 years. Younger children can take part but do not ride their own sled. Instead they join the guide as a passenger.
Additional Information:
The order of tours and activities within this itinerary may vary due to weather conditions and other contributing factors that must be taken into account by the guides when planning your tour. You will receive the exact order of activities once you arrive on site. The far north can have fluctuating and unpredictable weather with very strong temperature differences. The safety of guests and animals comes first, and for this reason, we reserve the right to change the itinerary and intensity of activities if and when needed. This involves both adjustments due to insufficient snow (meaning we cannot drive the sleds) or too much snow (snowstorms and extreme cold can cause accidents and various other problems). The required adjustments and fallback options in rare cases are based on the day-to-day conditions and can be compensated by shorter or longer daily stages, alternative accommodations, or even single day trips. In extremely rare cases we may organise alternative transport (ie. cars, quad bikes, etc). Feel free to contact us if you would like a more detailed assessment of this tour and travel period.
