Pre-season Training at the husky farm

This trip offers you insights into how a husky farm prepares for the winter season. You’ll spend a lot of time with the dogs, learn the daily routines, and take on tasks such as feeding, training, and grooming the huskies. Training takes place with carts on wheels, supplemented by walks with the huskies, free-running, and time for quiet interaction. The schedule depends on the weather, temperatures, and the dogs’ needs. The group remains small so that you receive close guidance and develop a sense of responsibility within the team. A good level of physical fitness and a willingness to actively participate are required.

Pre-season Training at the husky farm: Tour Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival and First Visit of the Dogs
You’ll be picked up in Lakselv and first check in at your lodging near the husky farm (either glamping in a heated tent right next to the dogs or in a simple lodge a few minutes away). Then it’s off to your first visit to the kennel and the evening feeding. This is followed by dinner and an overnight stay at your lodging.
The included meals begin with dinner.

Day 2: Training Basics and First Experience
In the morning, you’ll start by feeding the dogs and learn about training equipment, daily routines, and how to prepare the dogs for the winter season. Depending on the temperatures, you’ll go on rides with the training carts: harnessing the dogs, driving a team, and checking their paws after training. Alternatively or in addition, walks or free-running sessions are possible to spend time with the dogs and help with socialization; there may also be work to do around the farm. At lunchtime, you’ll eat on-site or at your lodging. In the evening, feeding, dinner, and overnight stay follow.

Day 3: Training and Dog Care
After the morning feeding and kennel routines, the schedule is tailored to the weather conditions and the dogs’ needs. The plan is for a longer training run, followed by thorough post-run care: checking their paws, stretching, brushing, and basic dog care. Afterward, there will be plenty of time to relax with the huskies and bond with them. Depending on the need, you’ll also assist with maintenance and renovation work. In the evening, you’ll help with feeding, take the puppies or huskies for a walk, have dinner, and spend the night.

Day 4: Final Training Session and Time with the Huskies
The day begins with the usual routines. If conditions permit, you’ll lead one final training session or assist with behind-the-scenes tasks and daily care routines. Time is also set aside for social interaction with the huskies, including free-running, photos, and quiet moments spent with the dogs. In the evening, you’ll handle the final feeding, enjoy a farewell dinner, and spend your last night here.

Day 5: Farewell and Departure
To wrap things up, you’ll feed the dogs one last time in the morning before saying goodbye to them. Afterward, you’ll depart for Lakselv (or Alta for an additional fee). The tour ends after breakfast.

Accommodation:
You can choose between two types of accommodations. An apartment is available at the lodge, about five minutes from the husky farm, including transfers between the lodge and the farm. Alternatively, there is a large tent right next to the farm - rustic yet cozy, with a stove and beds - with the huskies as your closest neighbours. There is a simple toilet there, but no shower. Meals are included in the program, from dinner on the first day through breakfast on the fifth day.

Note:
All transfers are included, including pickup and return to Lakselv Airport (or Alta for an additional fee) as well as transportation between your accommodation and the husky farm. Activities are subject to weather conditions. Therefore, changes to the daily itinerary are possible. Group size is limited to a maximum of four participants. Sturdy, warm clothing is recommended for participation, including a waterproof outer layer, sturdy shoes, and work gloves. It’s best to bring several layers so you can dress appropriately for varying temperatures.
