Northern Lights & Huskies in Syöte

This 6-day winter trip to Syöte in Finland is ideal for anyone who wants to be active together and is looking for a first taste of the Far North. The focus is on a balanced mix of guided winter experiences and restful time to enjoy the quiet surroundings around Pikku Syöte. With clear skies and the right conditions, you may be lucky enough to see the Northern Lights.

Northern Lights & Huskies in Syöte: The Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival at Pikku Syöte
Upon your arrival at Kuusamo Airport, you will be picked up and taken to your hotel. There, you will check into your room and have plenty of time to settle into your new surroundings. Meals begin today with dinner.

Day 2: Nighttime Snowshoe Hike & Hut Experience
Today, you can plan your day exactly as you'd like. Take some time to rest after yesterday's journey, book one of the many optional activities (see extras), or explore the small ski resort, whose slopes are within walking distance of the hotel. After dinner, you will set out on your first guided excursion: Hiking on snowshoes, you will reach the summit of Pikku-Syöte Fjell, where you will enjoy an unobstructed view of the night sky. Weather permitting, this is the ideal spot for viewing the Northern Lights. The excursion ends by the fire in a traditional hut with hot drinks, small snacks, and stories about the area. Duration: 2 - 2.5 h; hiking distance: 2 km.

Day 3: Visiting reindeer
On this day, a 20-minute transfer will take you to a family-run reindeer farm that has been in operation for seven generations. The farmer himself will share the history of reindeer herding, which is closely tied to the ancient way of life of the Sami people, Europe's only indigenous people. You will have a chance to feed the reindeer and visit a small home museum that offers further insights into Finnish culture. Finally, you will gather around a fire with hot drinks and a small snack to listen to the farmer's stories. Duration: 2.5 h.

Day 4: Husky Safari through winter wonderlands
Today, you will pick up the pace and meet some lovely huskies. A 15-minute transfer will take you to a local husky farm that puts the dogs' well-being first. Upon arrival, you will be greeted by joyful barking, but first you will learn how to handle the dogs and the sled properly. Then, in pairs per sled, you will head out into the white winter forest for a tour of approximately 12 km (solo drivers available for an additional fee). Along the way, you can switch places so that everyone gets a chance to drive. Also included are a hot drink and a small snack. Duration (not just driving time): 2 - 2.5 h. If you're interested, we'd be happy to arrange a longer husky safari for an additional fee.

Day 5: Snowmobile Tour
It's time for your next adventure: a snowmobile tour. After a 15-minute transfer, your clothing and equipment will be checked once more, and you will receive an introduction to driving a snowmobile. Then, you will set off in pairs on snowmobiles for a tour through the forests and across the frozen lakes of Syöte (solo drivers available for additional fee). During a break along the way, you will make a campfire together and warm up with hot drinks and snacks. Here, you will also have the opportunity to switch places and take turns driving. 2.5 - 3 hours later, you will finally return to the hotel.

Day 6: Farewell and Departure
Your time in Finland is sadly drawing to a close and meals service end today after breakfast. Depending on your departure time, there may still be time for one last look at the snow covered forests around Pikku Syöte before a transfer takes you back to the airport.

Accommodation:
Far from mass tourism, Pikku-Syöte offers an authentic Finnish experience. Look forward to an Arctic Gastronomy Journey featuring 3-course meals that change daily and are served exclusively at your table. You’ll immediately taste the passion and expertise with which the dishes are prepared using wild, regional ingredients, as well as the Nordic flavours that inspire them. Syöte itself is a national park and impresses with its vast expanse of hills and forests. There is also a small ski resort right next to the hotel, allowing you to easily reach the slopes on foot (ski-in, ski-out).
You will spend five nights in a Wool Superior Room, a bright, spacious double room with a large window and Nordic inspired design made from high quality natural materials. Depending on the room, the bathroom has a private sauna or a jacuzzi, as well as a separate shower. Amenities include dim-out curtains, TV, hairdryer, kettle, tea cups and glasses, as well as Finnish herbal tea and Finnish natural cosmetics. Upon request, we can also offer alternative room categories, including a glass igloo or more affordable options.

Important information:
The husky safari will not take place if temperatures reach -25 °C or lower as this is considered unsafe for the dogs to run. Additionally, the guide decided on-site whether children may drive the sled themselves or participate only as passengers, depending on their age and height.
For the snowmobile tour, the driver has to be at least 18 years old and in posession of a valid driver's license. Children under 140 cm in height will participate in a sledge pulled by the guide's snowmobile.

Please note that neither coffee nor tea is included. All beverages have to be paid for separately (exception: herbal tea in room).
