Huskies and hot springs: A journey with action and relaxation
This dog sled tour takes you to natural hot springs in Interior Alaska. You can enjoy the beauty of nature with your own husky team before you relax in a hot tub in the middle of nowhere. At night, the impressive Northern Lights dance over your head, while you are filled with pleasant warmth and inner peace.
The Hot Springs Husky Experience: The itinerary
Day 1: Getting to know each other
In the morning, you will be picked up at your hotel in Fairbanks and taken to the husky farm. Here you will meet the excited dogs and your guides, who will give you a brief introduction to the equipment and techniques of mushing. Afterward, it goes on a short test drive through the forests of Alaska. Lunch awaits you between preparing the sleds for the next day. Enjoy a delicious dinner before being transferred to a hotel in Fairbanks for the night. The on-site travel services begin with the transfer to the husky farm on the first day and end with the arrival in Fairbanks on the last day.

After breakfast at the hotel, you will be picked up and taken to the husky farm, where you will prepare everything for the upcoming tour. You will then join a two-hour drive to the trailhead, the luggage is loaded on the sleds and the dogs are harnessed. When everyone's ready, it's time to head into the wilderness. Your path takes you through dense forests and icy tundra in an up and down over mountains with breathtaking views. As soon as you arrive at the hot springs, you first care for the dogs, and thank them for their hard work. Then it's finally time for a warm bath.
Day 3: Time to Relax
This day is all about relaxation. Enjoy the tranquility and leave your worries behind with a warm bath surrounded by the Alaskan wilderness. You can choose between three different hot tubs. After sunset, you should watch the night sky closely. Perhaps the Northern Lights will show up.
Day 4: Back through the wilderness & Departure
After breakfast, it's time to say goodbye to the hot springs. On the way back, you will enjoy fantastic views of the surrounding mountain ranges. But be careful, there might be strong winds on some sections of the route. Back from the tour, you will unpack the sleds, tuck the dogs away in their boxes and make your way to Fairbanks. Once there, you will set off on your journey home with renewed energy and lots of great memories. On-site travel services end with the arrival in Fairbanks. Attention: Dinner is not included today!
Accommodation:
You will spend your first night in a double room of the Westmark Hotel in Fairbanks. At the hot springs you will find three different cabins, each with its own wood stove, picture window, kitchen stove and outhouse. The so-called Cedar Cabin is used as the main cabin, where you can meet and have meals together. A charming green cabin next to the hot springs and a log cabin serve as private accommodation for couples and groups (bunk beds). Please note that, except for solar-powered LED lights in the Cedar Cabin, the cabins do not have electricity or running water. Near the cabins is a cold freshwater spring from which water is drawn for drinking and cooking. The water from the hot springs is usually used for washing dishes.
We strongly recommend arriving in Fairbanks a day early and staying an extra day after the tour. This is due to possible flight delays or a possible late return from the husky tour. The transfer is only possible from accommodations in Fairbanks! We would be happy to arrange a hotel in Fairbanks for you. Just contact us if you are interested.
Requirements:
This tour requires a very good level of fitness. For example, you will need to help the dogs push the sled on climbs of several hundred meters. On the descents, however, you will need to be able to maintain your balance in order to operate the sled brakes properly. Furthermore, some sections of the tour are very demanding. Conditions in the far north can often be very harsh (e.g., deep snow, wind drifts), and physical activity is essential during the trip. This begins with harnessing the dogs, through standing on the sled all day, to caring for the animals and performing daily tasks such as fetching water or chopping wood. To safely enjoy this tour, you must:
- be able to lift 23 kg (50 lbs)
- withstand hard falls on ice or snow
- be able to be dragged along while holding onto the sled's steering (stressful on the shoulders)
- squat to use the toilet outdoors
- be able to balance on one leg for at least 5 - 10 seconds
- be able to climb stairs quickly and easily
- be able to jump up from a lying position, either from the ground or from deep snow off-piste
- be able to walk or hike for up to 8 hours on steep and uneven terrain
- be prepared to guide strong sled dogs (stressful on the wrists, hands, and shoulders)
- be prepared to be outdoors in cold, wet, windy and other adverse weather conditions
If you are over 65 years, we ask for a medical certificate.
We also strongly recommend travel and health insurance.
Additional Information:
The safety of our guests and animals is our top priority on all of our tours. The far north can have fluctuating and unpredictable weather with very strong temperature differences. Whilst we strive to follow the planned trails as closely as possible, we reserve the right to change the order of activities, the route of safaris, and the intensity of the excursions should the needs of our guests or animals necessitate it, or if the weather conditions compromise our pre-planned route. This involves both adjustments due to insufficient snow (meaning we cannot drive the sleds) or too much snow (snowstorms and extreme cold can cause accidents and various other problems). The required adjustments and fallback options in rare cases are based on the day-to-day conditions and can be compensated by shorter or longer daily stages, alternative accommodations, or even single day trips. In extremely rare cases we may organise alternative transport (ie. cars, quad bikes, etc). Feel free to contact us if you would like a more detailed assessment of this tour and travel period. Optional activities have very limited availability; we recommend booking them well in advance, often weeks or months before departure, as they may be fully booked by the time of travel.
