During this journey, an unforgettable adventure awaits you. On this absolutely unique dog sled tour you can enjoy a breathtaking landscape which can only be reached by bush plane. Nowhere else in the world can you be closer to the fascinating northern lights than in this untouched landscape, away from civilisation and light pollution. Your highly trained guides will give you a mini Arctic photography course, so you will be able to capture the indescribable moments in pictures. The tours are led by German-speaking Sven Haltmann, a highly experienced Iditarod and Yukon Quest Musher. From him, you will learn all about the challenging sport of dog sledding. Sven is looking forward to sharing some interesting characteristics about the dogs of your team and to explore the beautiful landscape with you.
Brooks Range Husky Expedition: The Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival In Fairbanks
Today you will have the opportunity to prepare for the eventful days to come from the comfort of your Fairbanks hotel room. You will also have the opportunity to participate in numerous optional Northern Lights programmes.
Day 2: The Adventure Begins
After a delicious breakfast, you will board the lightweight aircraft known as a "bush plane" and travel to Bettles. This untouched region can only be reached by a small plane. After a tour in the village and after you have moved into your room, you will get to know your husky team. Afterward, you will embark on a voyage of discovery on the Koyukuk River by snowmobile. A delicious dinner at the lodge completes your first day of exploring.
Days 3-5: Uphill Through The Wilderness
Over the next few days, you will set out on an exciting tour with your dog team. With a little luck, you will see native wildlife such as wolves, polar foxes, moose, and ptarmigan. The two nights are spent in Timber Creek and Crevice Creek, America's northernmost farm. You will take care of your faithful huskies after each tour and provide them with plenty of food and love. On both evenings, you will enjoy a traditional Alaskan dish for dinner, prepared over a wood-fired oven. Hopefully, in the evening by the campfire, you will have the chance to see beautiful the Northern Lights dancing across the sky.
There's nothing like waking up surrounded by excitable huskies that greet you in the morning, wagging their tails and full of energy. By now you would have become familiar with the individual characteristics of each animal and mastered the art of driving your sled so that you can fully enjoy the beauty of the landscape. The deeper you drive into the Brooks Range, the more spectacular the landscape becomes. You will overcome obstacles like deep snow and the frozen tundra; feeling the power of the Huskies as you tackle the challenging trail together. During the wilderness tour, you will be served breakfast, lunch, and dinner. On the fifth day you will return to Bettles. Enjoy this last ride with your dog sled and take in all the beauty of Alaska one last time. The evening starts with a delicious dinner and ends with a hilarious farewell party!
Day 6: Farewell & Departure
Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end. After a hearty breakfast, it will be time to bid a fond farewell to the Huskies and the Alaskan wilderness, as you board your bush plane back to the civilisation of Fairbanks. Depending on your departure date/time, you can begin your journey home or spend more days in the wintry town of Fairbanks before leaving.
Maximum number of participants: 4 people per tour group.
Accommodation:
This adventure-packed journey brings you closer to traditional nature-based Alaskan life. You will be housed in authentic, rustic accommodation throughout your stay. This tour gives you a chance to step back in time when dog sleds were used as a means of transport and there was no running water or electricity. Leave civilisation behind and immerse yourself in the life of a musher, where cooking together by the open fire, chopping wood, and fetching water are among your daily tasks. There is no running water or electricity at the lodge or in the cabins, and thus this is the perfect place to get back to basics and unplug from modern technology.
Requirements: Please note that this sled dog tour requires a minimum level of fitness. High-quality outdoor winter clothing, such as as boots, an Arctic jacket, trousers, and gloves are provided by the tour operator.
Additional Information:
The safety of our guests and animals is our top priority on all of our tours. The far north can have fluctuating and unpredictable weather with very strong temperature differences. Whilst we strive to follow the planned trails as closely as possible, we reserve the right to change the order of activities, the route of safaris, and the intensity of the excursions should the needs of our guests or animals necessitate it, or if the weather conditions compromise our pre-planned route. This involves both adjustments due to insufficient snow (meaning we cannot drive the sleds) or too much snow (snowstorms and extreme cold can cause accidents and various other problems). The required adjustments and fallback options in rare cases are based on the day-to-day conditions and can be compensated by shorter or longer daily stages, alternative accommodations, or even single day trips. In extremely rare cases we may organise alternative transport (ie. cars, quad bikes, etc). Feel free to contact us if you would like a more detailed assessment of this tour and travel period. The service providers and tour providers always perform their services in compliance with and in accordance with the official requirements and requirements applicable at the time of stay. For this reason, corona-related reasonable usage rules or restrictions may arise when using said services. Please note these official requirements (Google Translate).
