Best of Lapland

This six-day winter trip around Kiruna brings together husky tours, a snowmobile safari, and an excursion in search of the Northern Lights into a wonderfully well-rounded experience in Swedish Lapland. You will spend plenty of time on the dog sled and take on responsibilities, from driving the sled to caring for the dogs afterward. During a Northern Lights evening, plans will adapt to the weather and conditions to give you the best possible chance of witnessing this natural spectacle. The highlight of the trip is the two-day husky tour with an overnight stay in the wilderness, where you can immerse yourself in traditional life surrounded by the beauty of winter nature. Best of Lapland: the itinerary

Day 1: Welcome to Lapland
Upon arrival in Kiruna, you will be personally greeted and taken to the Northern Lights Lodge by private transfer. Once there, you can try on the provided Arctic outdoor clothing and have time to settle in at your leisure. In the evening, you will have a three-course meal featuring local flavors and can enjoy the sauna and outdoor hot tub later on. If the sky is clear, you might even catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights while enjoying the pleasant warmth of the water.

Day 2: Dog Sledding and Northern Lights Safari
In the morning, you will head west of Kiruna to a husky kennel, where you will first receive some safety instructions on dog sledding. Once everyone is ready, you will step onto the sled's runners for a tour through the surrounding area. Each sled is shared by two people and pulled by a team of huskies, with both participants taking turns driving. The route winds through Arctic landscapes with views of Sweden's highest mountain range, along frozen rivers, and through pristine forest terrain. After returning, you will help to care for the dogs, including thanking them for their hard work and giving them massages. In the evening, after dinner, there's a flexible Northern Lights safari, during which you will seek out the best viewing conditions - by minibus, snowmobile, or snowshoes, depending on the weather.

Day 3: Snowmobile Safari to a Viewpoint
Your day begins with a hearty breakfast before the next adventure is on the agenda. In pairs, you will drive snowmobiles along quiet, scenic trails deep into the Arctic wilderness beyond the tree line to the edge of the Artctic tundra and up to an impressive viewpoint. There, sweeping panoramas open up over Sweden's highest mountain range. Along the way, you will stop at a frozen lake, brew coffee over an open fire, and enjoy a classic Swedish fika outdoors. Depending on conditions, you can also try your hand at ice fishing. Today over dinner, you can surely share some stories about the day's adventures.

Day 4: Another dog sled tour through snow-covered forests
Today it's time to get back on the dog sleds. Two people per sled, you will guide your dog team through the wintry forests around Oinakka. Drive along snow-covered forest trails, across frozen wetlands, and beneath ancient pine trees deep into the remote wilderness. The sounds of the dogs and the silence of the winter forest set the pace.

Day 5: Overnight Husky Safari
After breakfast, a shuttle will take you to a husky kennel, where you will work together to prepare for the upcoming two-day wilderness tour. You will get to know the husky team that will accompany you over the next few days, prepare the equipment, and load your gear onto the sleds. Once all the preparations are complete, you will set off on your husky wilderness adventure. From here on, you will drive a sled on your own (1 person / sled) and be responsible for your dog team. The weather, snow, and temperature will directly influence your pace and itinerary. At the end of today's stage, a traditional, simple wilderness cabin awaits you - far from civilization and without running water or electricity. Before you get your dinner, it's the dogs' turn first. They have really earned their food as well as some cuddles. Then it's your turn helping with cooking, heating the cabin together, and fetching water from a lake, river, or melted snow.

Day 6: Return Trip by Dog Sled and Departure
You start the day with breakfast for the dogs, followed by breakfast for yourself at the wilderness cabin. Afterward, you will drive the sled back to the husky kennel, enjoying the white winter scenery once again. Once there, you will take care for the dogs one last time, stow away the equipment and say a warm goodbye to your new canine and your human friends. Then you will be picked up and taken to Kiruna Airport for your journey home.
For a more relaxed ending to your trip, we recommend adding another night at the lodge and planning your return trip for the next day (for an additional fee). Please feel free to contact us if you're interested!

Accommodations:
You will stay most of the nights at a beautifully situated lodge on the outskirts of Kiruna in Swedish Lapland, with direct access to pristine Arctic nature. The lodge is small and family-run, offering a very warm, cozy and peaceful stay. It features seven double rooms, each with a loft and a private bathroom. There is also an inviting, open lounge with a fireplace and comfortable armchairs where you can relax with a drink, as well as a relaxation area with a sauna. The meals are served in the dining room next to the lounge. Wi-Fi is available. At the lodge, you can rent snowshoes and cross-country skis for free at any time and set out on your own tour through the beautiful winter landscape.
During your two-day dog-sled safari (days 5 - 6), you will spend the night in a remote wilderness cabin surrounded by nature. The cabin has neither running water nor electricity, and all participants sleep in one room (shared accommodation). During your stay there, teamwork is essential, and all necessary tasks, such as heating the cabin, fetching water, or cooking, are handled collectively.

Important information & requirements:
This tour requires a certain level of physical fitness. For example, you should be able to help the dogs on uphill sections or in deep snow by getting off the sled and pushing along or pushing off with your foot, similar to riding a kick scooter. In addition, the two-day husky safari requires teamwork and active participation: You will take care of your husky team and help with tasks such as fetching water, preparing firewood, or cooking. Along the way, you may be exposed to harsh weather conditions such as snow and temperatures below -30 °C. Since gloves can get damp or wet while working with dogs, you should bring a spare pair.
Driving a snowmobile is allowed from the age of 18 and only with a valid driver's license.
