Bear watching and wilderness adventure in Finland: The itinerary
Day 1: Arrival
Transfer from Kajaani airport to your accommodation. You will check into your room and receive information for the next few days when you have your first dinner tonight with the group. Look forward to the adventures that lie ahead. The on-site programme starts with dinner on the first day and ends after breakfast on the last day.
Day 2: Hike through the Paljakka Forest
Get ready for the day with a hearty breakfast. A wonderful hiking tour through the Paljakka forest lies ahead of you. You will explore one of the oldest spruce forests in Finland and marvel at the magical, untouched nature here in the far north. Around noon, during a well-deserved break, lunch is prepared on an open fire in a traditional kota. Back at the husky farm you can relax in the traditional sauna.
Day 3: Huskies and bears
After breakfast, explore the Husky Kennel with all its friendly and curious inhabitants. You can help with the feeding and learn interesting facts about dog sledding and these fascinating animals. After lunch on the farm, you will set off for bear watching and after a 2-hour drive you will reach the wilderness lodge in the middle of the forest near the Russian border. You spend the night here and can observe brown bears from late afternoon until the next morning. With a bit of luck, even the mother bear and her cubs will drop by. If you get tired, a nap can be taken in the observation hut (beds and sleeping bags are available).
Day 4: Return to the farm and relax at the lake
The next morning you will have breakfast together at the wilderness centre in the middle of nature before heading back to the husky farm. At lunchtime, you will drive by car to a nearby lake where you will spend some beautiful and unforgettable hours. Here you will find a rustic smoke sauna right by the water, which invites you to relax. A campfire is lit on the shore and for lunch you grill sausages here and enjoy fantastic views. You will have enough time this afternoon to go to the sauna, take a swim or go out on the water in a boat. The evening ends with a relaxed dinner at the husky farm.
Day 5: Full-day hike in the nature park.
Get ready with a hearty breakfast, as you have an exciting day ahead of you. Today you will go on a full-day hike in the Latvasuo nature reserve and bog. If you are lucky, you may pick cloudberries or cranberries along the way. Lunch is at the Joutensuokota (wilderness hut). After about 4 hours, you return to the husky farm with great impressions.
Day 6: Out and about by canoe
You start the day with a breakfast together with the other tour participants and then pack for today’s adventure. You will go canoeing on the lake or river, depending on the weather conditions. This is a particularly nature-oriented and active excursion that will give you wonderful memories and a beautiful experience in the middle of the Finnish wilderness. As you are already used to, you will also take a lunch break on this day and have lunch in a kota. On cold days you can warm up by the fire or cool down in the lake on hot sunny days. You will explore the surroundings from the water and experience a whole new perspective.
Day 7: Departure
After a hearty breakfast and a fond farewell, your transfer will take you back to the airport.
Accommodation:' The small guest house is built in the Scandinavian country house style and located in the middle of nature at the edge of the Paljakka nature reserve. Here, you are far off the beaten tourist track and can instead meet like-minded nature lovers and enjoy mainly natural, regional food. Sauna and gym are available. Accommodation in a double room. Single rooms can be booked at an extra charge.
Additional Information:
The order of tours and activities within this itinerary may vary due to weather conditions and other contributing factors that must be taken into account by the guides when planning your tour. You will receive the exact order of activities once you arrive on site. The far north can have fluctuating and unpredictable weather with very strong temperature differences. The safety of guests and animals comes first, and for this reason, we reserve the right to change the itinerary and intensity of activities if and when needed. This involves both adjustments due to insufficient snow (meaning we cannot drive the sleds) or too much snow (snowstorms and extreme cold can cause accidents and various other problems). The required adjustments and fallback options in rare cases are based on the day-to-day conditions and can be compensated by shorter or longer daily stages, alternative accommodations, or even single day trips. In extremely rare cases we may organise alternative transport (ie. cars, quad bikes, etc).
