Active Lapland Holiday: The itinerary

Day 1: Welcome to Lapland!
After your arrival at Kittilä airport or Kolari railway station, you will be taken to your resort. This is where your adventure in the wilderness of Lapland begins. You can check in and settle into your room or cabin before a hearty dinner awaits you. Depending on your arrival time, you will receive your warm winter clothing either today or the next morning. Catering starts with dinner on the first day and ends with breakfast or lunch on the day of departure.

Over the following days, you will take part in a variety of differenct activities. These will be spread evenly throughout your stay - you will receive the exact schedule at check-in at reception. Depending on how many nights you have booked, the activities may be more or less spread out (stays of 5 to 7 nights are available). Meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner) are served in the hotel restaurant.

Snowshoe hike in the national park:
You will explore Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park, the largest fell area in western Lapland, on a snowshoe hike. You will quickly get the hang of using the snowshoes and set off with your guide on a varied hike through dense forests and up onto the open fells, offering impressive views of the surrounding area. Along the way, your guide will tell you interesting stories about Arctic nature and life in the north. Have your camera ready: there are plenty of beautiful photo opportunities ahead. Duration: 3 hours + transfer from the resort.

Husky tour:
You will visit a husky kennel, where you will be greeted by excited barking as soon as you arrive. Before you set off, however, you will receive an introduction to driving a dog sled. Then the time will finally come, and you will be assigned to a husky team in pairs. One person acts as the driver and the other as the passenger, sitting on the sled. Halfway through the tour, you will swap places so that everyone gets a turn at driving. After the 10 - 12 km journey through forests and frozen swamps, you can get to know your dog team better and reward them with plents of cuddles. Total duration (not just driving time): 2 hours + possible transfer from your resort.

Ice fishing:
Beneath the glistering ice of Finland's many lakes and rivers swim countless fish that can be caught using traditional methods. On this excursion, you can try your luck for yourself. You will be taken to a frozen lake or river in a slege pulled by the guide's snowmobile, where you will set up for ice fishing. First, a hole is drilled in the thick ice, then you will lower your line into the water and wait, all assisted by an expert guide. To warm up, enjoy a hot drink by the fire. You can also cook your freshly caught fish there, should your efforts prove successful. Total duration: 3 hours.

Snowmobile Safari:
After a safety instruction, you will set off on a snowmobile safari through snow-covered forests and across frozen lakes. You will share a snowmobile in pairs and take turns driving, or you can opt to drive solo for an additional fee (please contact us for this). Discover the beauty of Lapland and feel the wind on your face. You will cover a distance of 20 - 30 km, with the total duration (including briefing) being approx. 2 hours. Please note that you have to be at least 18 years old and own a valid driving licence to drive a snowmobile.

Reindeer Experience:
Visit a traditional reindeer farm and learn more about the way of life in old times and the local culture. You will explore a historic farmhouse and museum, gaining deeper insight into reindeer husbandry. You can also have a go at throwing a suopunki (traditional lasso). The highlight of the experience is the short 3 km sleigh ride through the winter forest: you will travel in a convoy, with your guide leading the reindeer pulling the first sleigh and the rest of the reindeer-drawn sleighs following, connected by a rope. Total duration: 2.5 hours + possible transfer from the resort.

Visit to Arctic Sauna World:
Sit back and enjoy a few relaxing hours at Arctic Sauna World. It features a variety of themed saunas, partly inspired by the elements of nature. Get to know the Earth Sauna, take in the beautiful lake views from the Water Sauna, and feel the warmth of the Fire Sauna. Between sauna sessions, you can take a refreshing dip in the ice hole in the lake or relax in the panoramic lounge. Total duration: 2 hours + possible transfer from your resort. Swimwear is compulsory at Arctic Sauna World.

Traditional kota dinner:
Instead of dining in the hotel restaurant, on one evening of your stay you will enjoy a dinner in a traditional Lappish kota. This is a classic wooden hut, somewhat resembling a teepee in shape. At the heart of the kota is an open fire, on which part of your meal will be cooked today. Look forward to an evening in an authentic atmosphere, accompanied by stories and music that will bring you closer to the spirit of Lapland. Total duration: 2 hours + possible transfer from your resort. Please note that a smoky aroma may linger on your clothes after this dinner. We recommend taking this into account when choosing your outfit.

Northern Lights Workshop:
On an afternoon, this workshop will teach you everything you need to know about the Northern Lights. You will delve deeper into how they are formed and the science behind them, while also exploring the stories and myths surrounding this natural phenomenon. Moreover, you will receive tips on how to spot the dancing lights yourself and capture them in stunning photos. The programme is rounded of with hot drinks and plenty of time to ask questions. Total duration: 1 hour. The workshop takes place indoors.

Campfire and Northern Lights watching:
After dinner, you will be taken deeper into the forest in a sleigh pulled by the guide's snowmobile to a cosy campfire site. There, you will settle together and enjoy a lovely evening with warm drinks and good company. On clear nights, thousands of starts stretch out above your heads and, with a bit of luck, the Northern Lights will trace their paths across the dark sky. Even if they don't appear, it is still a special experience to be out at night amidst the peaceful nature of Finland. Total duration: 2 hours.


Day 6/7/8: Departure from Lapland
It's time to say goodbye to Finland and start your journey home. After breakfast or lunch, you will be transferred to Kittilä Airport or Kolari railway station, depending on your departure time. Your luggage will be full of fond memories of your adventures in Finnish Lapland.

Accommodation:
During your active holiday, you will stay at Harriniva, Jeris or Torassieppi Resort. The resorts are located close to picturesque Muonio and are surrounded by beautiful nature, making them a perfect base for your time in Lapland. Included is accommodation in a standard room (based on an occupancy of 2 persons) with private toilet and shower. Use of the hotel's sauna is included (men and women separate). You will also find a hotel restaurant where meals are served. Under "extras" you can choose between different room categories and cabins (at an extra charge).

Important information:
To drive a snowmobile yourself, you must be at least 18 years old and have a valid driving licence. The price includes insurance for the snowmobile with a self-liability of max. €1200,- per snowmobile.
