Dog Sledding Expedition in Northern Norway

This five-day dog-sledding expedition takes you through northern Norway. After spending the first night at the lodge, you’ll spend three days traveling along varying trails in Arctic conditions before returning to the lodge for the final night. The focus is on working with the dogs and learning the routines involved in daily work with sled dogs. You’ll prepare your dog team yourself, drive the sled together with another person, and help daily with feeding, grooming, and camp and trail operations. Good physical fitness, initiative, and team spirit are essential.

Dog Sledding Expedition in Northern Norway: The Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival, Introduction, and first dog sled ride
After arriving at Lakselv Airport, you’ll be welcomed and transferred to the husky farm. Once there, you’ll get to know the team and daily life at the husky camp. You will also receive an introduction to the equipment, safety procedures, and how to take care of the dogs. In the evening, a short outing in the surrounding area is on the agenda to get a feeling for the sled, the pace, and working with the dog team. Overnight stay at the lodge.
The tour package begins with dinner and ends after breakfast on the last day.

Day 2: Start of the husky expedition with overnight camping
The day begins with feeding the dogs, breakfast, and preparing the sleds and husky teams. You’ll be actively involved in the daily routines and experience just how much preparation and care are required for traveling in Arctic conditions. The route depends on snow and weather conditions and may take you through forests, across open plateaus, over frozen rivers or lakes, and even to coastal landscapes. You’ll drive your own dog sled, which you’ll share with one other person, taking turns driving, and you’ll handle the daily dog-care routines. This includes, among other things, preparing the dogs before departure and tending to them after arriving at the camp. Along the way, meals are prepared outdoors using simple camping gear. In the evening, you’ll arrive at the camp, tend to the dogs, and spend the night in a heated Gamme tent in the wilderness.

Day 3: Continue through the wilderness
After feeding the dogs, the day begins again with breakfast and preparing the sleds and dogs before you set out on the next leg of the journey. Your guide will adjust the route based on temperatures and weather conditions, and along the way, calmer sections alternate with more technically challenging passages. You’ll once again enjoy your meals outdoors. In the evening, you’ll work together to care for the dogs and get everything ready for the next day before spending another night in a heated tent in the wilderness.

Day 4: Final day of dog sledding and return to the husky farm
The final day of the expedition begins with the routines you’ve come to know well: feeding the dogs, having breakfast, and preparing the sleds. You’ll set out on your final tour through Finnmark before heading back to the husky farm. There, the dogs will be cared for, and the expedition will come to a close. You’ll spend the night at the lodge.

Day 5: Farewell and return transfer
After breakfast, there’s time for one last quiet moment and cuddles with the dogs before a transfer takes you back to Lakselv.

Accommodation:
You’ll stay at a local lodge as well as in a heated gamme tent in the wilderness. The tour begins with one night at the lodge, followed by two nights camping during the expedition, and concludes with another night at the lodge. At camp, there is no running water or electricity and the focus is on practical routines: arriving, tending to the dogs, eating together, and preparing for the next leg of the journey. Overnight stays are part of the wilderness experience and are suited to the Arctic conditions in which this trip takes place.

The route and daily schedule depend on snow conditions, weather, and temperatures and may change accordingly. You’ll be involved in the daily routines of preparing and caring for the dogs. Meals are prepared outdoors along the way using simple field equipment. You’ll receive the necessary equipment and instruction for the activities.
