Itinerary: Antarctica Express: Fly Over the Drake Passage
Day 1: Arrive in Punta Arenas, Chile
Your journey begins in Punta Arenas, Chile, the largest city in southern Patagonia. Early arrivals may visit the city’s museums, which provide insights into local history and culture, or explore local cuisine in the restaurants. Shops offer opportunities to purchase souvenirs. In the afternoon, a representative from Quark Expeditions will meet you at the official start hotel for a welcome dinner, during which you will receive important information in preparation for embarkation.

Day 2: Fly to King George Island and Embarkation
Your charter flight from Punta Arenas takes you to King George Island, one of the South Shetland Islands. From the air, you will gain an initial impression of the Antarctic landscapes. After landing, you will transfer by Zodiac to your ship, which will take you along the Antarctic Peninsula.
Day 3 to 6: Antarctic Peninsula and South Shetland Islands
Antarctica is a continent of striking landscapes and diverse wildlife. The expedition team keeps watch for whales and seabirds, providing updates on sightings. On-board experts offer explanations on glaciology, history, and regional wildlife, and provide photography guidance. Daily activities include landings and Zodiac cruises, enabling wildlife observation. The first Zodiac landing brings you to a shore inhabited by penguins. Each landing is weather-dependent and offers different viewing opportunities. You will learn to distinguish between Adélie, Gentoo, and Chinstrap penguins. You may take a Zodiac cruise to observe whales and icebergs, or visit a penguin colony on foot the following day. From the sound of calving glaciers to watching predators such as orcas and leopard seals, each day provides new insights. Your expedition team will accompany you and provide background information on the locations you visit.
Day 7: Disembarkation and Fly to Punta Arenas
After approximately a week on board, you will disembark on King George Island. The return flight to Punta Arenas, Chile, marks the end of the expedition. Following a group transfer to the hotel, the evening is at your leisure, whether to explore the city or reflect on your journey.
Day 8: Depart Punta Arenas
After breakfast, you may continue your travel plans, explore further destinations at your own pace, or transfer to Punta Arenas airport. This day marks the conclusion of the expedition and provides the opportunity to reflect on your experiences.
Further Information: The Antarctic Express – Fly the Drake expedition is highly popular and lasts 8 days. It combines charter flights between Punta Arenas and King George Island with shipboard and Zodiac activities along the Antarctic Peninsula. The price includes accommodation on board, all meals, snacks and selected beverages, activities according to the daily programme, Zodiac transfers, landings, and lectures and guided tours by the expedition team. Selected transfers, such as from Punta Arenas airport to the hotel on the first day, are also included. Optional activities, such as kayaking or stand-up paddleboarding, may be booked at additional cost, subject to weather and ice conditions.
Not included in the price are international flights to and from Punta Arenas, travel insurance, visas, personal equipment, and optional excursions. Guests should have sufficient mobility to participate safely in on-board and Zodiac or landing activities. Medical facilities on board are limited, and in emergencies transport to external healthcare services may take some time.
This expedition is very popular, so it is recommended to enquire early to plan your experience.
