Whether you explore the landscape on a dog sled, hike on snowshoes or speed through the area on a snowmobile - if conditions are right and you're lucky, you might be able to see the Northern Lights.

Short getaway with Northern Lights hunt: the itinerary

Day 1: Arrival
You will be picked up at the airport, train station or a hotel in Kajaani and drive just under an hour to your accommodation, where your time out really begins. Settle into your comfortable room or cozy apartment and relax at the end of the day before setting off on your first adventure tomorrow. The evening is at your leisure, you can go on your first exploration tour or relax in the obligatory sauna.

Day 2: Dog sledding under the stars of Finland
Your day begins quite relaxed today. Explore the area or read a good book before setting off on your first adventure this evening. You will go to a husky kennel, where you will be greeted with excited barks upon your arrival - time for dogsledding! As you sit comfortably on the sled with a warm blanket, a professional musher skilfully drives you through the peaceful landscape (route length: 6 km). Feel the crisp air on your face and enjoy the ride through nature by night. Weather permitting, you can experience a starry night sky and, with a bit of luck, catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights. After the tour, you will get to know your husky team and learn more about their personalities. You will then gather around an open fire to round off the day with hot drinks and traditional Finnish snacks. Including the transfer, today's excursion will take just over 2 hours in total.

Day 3: Aurora snowmobile safari
The morning is again at your leisure before you start the snowmobile engines in the evening and explore the untouched wilderness. Beforehand, you will be given driving instructions and information about the snowmobiles. Even for people who already have some experience, driving in the twilight until absolute darkness is exciting! You will be using new touring snowmobiles - thanks to new technology, they are safer and more environmentally friendly than older models. On the way back, take a break and enjoy hot drinks and sweet snacks. With a bit of luck, you will be able to admire the fantastic natural spectacle of the Aurora Borealis. You will travel in pairs on a snowmobile and take turns driving (single driving for an extra charge). The entire excursion takes around three hours (with transfer) and you will cover a distance of around 20 km, depending on the snow and weather conditions.

Day 4: Northern Lights snowshoe hike
Get a good night's sleep and then enjoy the breakfast buffet (only at the hotel) before you start the day. In the evening, you will strap on snowshoes and follow your guide on a hike into the forest (approx. 2 km). Far from artificial light sources, the Northern Lights may appear on clear nights and light up your path, provided the conditions are right. But even without them showing up, exploring Finland's night-time nature is a special experience. Along the way, you can enjoy hot drinks and snacks by the open fire. In total, your excursion, including the transfer, will take around 2.5 h.

Day 5: Departure
All good things come to an end. After a final breakfast, you will unfortunately have to pack your bags and a transfer will take you back to the train station, airport or a hotel in Kajaani, from where you will continue your journey - hopefully with many wonderful memories of this special short winter vacation!

Accommodation:
The hotel in Vuokatti has two restaurants, a cozy little café in the lobby and a sauna (included, heated every day between 5 and 9:30 p.m.). The double rooms are approx. 25 m² in size, have their own bathroom, a TV and plenty of storage space. If required, up to two children can be accommodated on an extra bed or bunk bed. A stay at the hotel includes a ticket for a visit to the Katinkulta Spa at the Holiday Club of the same name.

The apartments (not part of the hotel) all have a small, fully equipped kitchen, private saunas, bathrooms, fireplaces, drying cupboards, TV and free Wi-Fi. When you stay in an apartment the breakfast is not included. Half board can be booked in advance.

Note:
To drive a snowmobile yourself, you must be at least 18 years old and have a valid driver's license. Children ride with an adult.
Please note that you will only receive the clothing and equipment provided on site for the planned activities. Please bring your own winter clothing for the rest of the time.

In addition to the dates listed, this tour is also available with arrival on Monday or Tuesday.

Transfer to activities:
For the included activities, you will be picked up from your hotel or apartment and taken to the safari center. This is the meeting and starting point for all participants. After the activity ends, you will be taken back to your hotel or apartment. This transfer (round trip) is already included in the price. You will receive the exact schedule for the activities via email a few days before your trip begins.
