Itinerary: Under the Northern Lights: Exploring Iceland & East Greenland
Day 1: Arrive in Reykjavik, Iceland
Arrive in the Icelandic capital in the morning and make your way to your included hotel. Once you have settled in, you will have the entire day at your disposal to explore the vibrant city of Reykjavik on your own terms. This is a perfect opportunity to immerse yourself in the unique culture and atmosphere of Iceland's largest city. Whether you choose to wander through the charming streets, visit local shops, or perhaps indulge in some traditional Icelandic cuisine, the day is yours to enjoy. Take in the sights and sounds of this fascinating city, from its colorful buildings to its stunning coastal views. With a full day ahead, you can truly experience the essence of Reykjavik at your own pace.
Day 2: Embark
In the afternoon, you will board your ship and begin your expedition. Get ready for a great adventure that lies ahead! As you board, feel the excitement in the air that comes with the start of a new journey. The crew will warmly welcome you and help you find your way around on board. Once you have settled in, you can enjoy the view of the open sea and feel the anticipation of the experiences to come. This journey promises to offer remarkable moments and discoveries as you explore new horizons.
Day 3: Exploring the Westfjords
Each region of Iceland has its own charm for nature, bird, and history lovers, and the little-visited Westfjords, where the land meets the sea in the most dramatic way, are no exception. Often referred to as "Iceland's best-kept secret," this rugged peninsula at the remote northwestern tip of the country is rich in fjords and mountains that dramatically descend to the sea. We spend the day exploring the fjords and coasts of Iceland's oldest region, enjoying the kaleidoscope of diverse land and seascapes. Here, plunging cliffs and rushing waterfalls alternate with colorful beaches, and gentle green hills lead up to moorlands dotted with rocky outcrops, small lakes, and occasionally grazing, shaggy Icelandic sheep or horses in the distance. Some small outposts of civilization, small fishing communities, are nestled at the edges of the fjords and along the shores of the Denmark Strait, looking out over the mighty Atlantic and towards East Greenland, keeping alive a maritime heritage that dates back to the Viking Age.
Day 4: Cruising
As we cruise north across the Denmark Strait, your expedition team will prepare you for the adventures ahead. You will be introduced to the fascinating history and politics of the Arctic, which has a rich and complex past. You will also learn more about the impressive wildlife, geology, ecology, and climate of this unique region. All these topics will help you better understand and appreciate the amazing sights you will soon explore. The team will also keep an eye out for the seabirds circling your ship, as well as the whales that are frequently encountered in these waters. These majestic creatures and the diverse birdlife offer you the opportunity to experience nature in its purest form.
Day 5 to 12: Exploring Northeast Greenland
During your tour along the remote northeast coast of Greenland, you will have the opportunity to participate in exciting Zodiac cruises and visit various coastal locations. Keep an eye out for grazing musk oxen, as 40 percent of the world's population lives in the Northeast Greenland National Park. Sailing through the spectacular Scoresby Sund, known as the birthplace of many icebergs, it quickly becomes clear why some claim it is one of the most beautiful fjord systems in the world. Places like Frederiksdal and Sydkap offer opportunities to explore the colorful tundra and the remnants of ancient Thule settlements. At the entrance of the Sund is Ittoqqortoormiit, the northernmost community in East Greenland, where you can spend time with the Inuit and learn more about their way of life. With clear skies, there is also the possibility of seeing the Northern Lights here. Further in the Sund, Røde Ø offers a picturesque backdrop to admire the beauty of sky-blue icebergs against the impressive red sandstone cliffs. Great views also await you in Kong Oscar Fjord, with possible landings on Ella Ø, known for its rugged cliffs and ice-choked waters, as well as in the flower-rich Botanikerbugt on Ymer Ø.
Day 13: Cruising
As your arctic adventure winds down, you have the opportunity to immerse yourself in a variety of engaging activities designed to enrich your experience. Attend a presentation by our knowledgeable onboard experts, who are eager to share their insights and stories about the fascinating Arctic region. Capture the memories of your journey by sharing your photos with fellow travelers, creating a sense of camaraderie and shared adventure. For those looking to relax, enjoy sipping an icy cocktail in the bar, where you can unwind and reflect on the remarkable sights you've seen. Alternatively, you might choose to watch a movie, providing a cozy escape as you sail through the serene waters. Throughout your time at sea, your dedicated Expedition Team will be readily available to answer any questions you may have, ensuring you make the most of your journey. They will also be on the lookout to point out any wildlife that may appear, adding an exciting element to your cruise and allowing you to witness the natural beauty of the Arctic firsthand.
Day 14: Depart Reykjavik, Iceland
At the end of your journey, you will disembark in Reykjavik, the capital of Iceland. This vibrant city, known for its unique blend of modern culture and impressive nature, offers a variety of experiences waiting to be discovered. Should you have booked accommodation after the expedition, we will arrange a convenient transfer for you to a centrally located spot in the city center.
