Itinerary: Spitsbergen Highlights: Journey into the Arctic Wilderness
Day 1: Arrive in Helsinki, Finland
Your Arctic adventure begins in Helsinki, a city known for its exceptional architecture and fascinating blend of Eastern and Western influences. If you arrive early, you have the opportunity to explore the numerous museums, galleries, and restaurants the city has to offer. Relax in a traditional Finnish sauna, famous for its soothing effects, or stroll through the vibrant Design District, which delights with its creative shops and innovative designs. At the end of the day, you can retreat to your included hotel and reflect on the day's impressions.
Day 2: Fly to Longyearbyen, Svalbard and Embark
In the morning, the group will be taken to the airport to board our private charter flight to Longyearbyen, the largest settlement on Spitsbergen. The anticipation of the upcoming adventure is palpable as travelers take their seats and prepare for the flight. The view from the window offers a first impression of the impressive landscape that awaits them. After landing in Longyearbyen, a place known for its unique blend of Arctic wilderness and human settlement, the real adventure begins. The group will have the opportunity to explore the fascinating surroundings and prepare for the upcoming journey. The excitement builds as travelers prepare to embark and discover the wonders of the Arctic.
Day 3 to 6: Exploring Spitsbergen
As you sail around the coasts of this enchanting island, you are constantly on the lookout for natural wonders. Your expedition, covering the western part of Spitsbergen, offers ample opportunity to admire massive glaciers, deep fjords, towering mountains, and unique flora and fauna. Sailing north into the Krossfjorden, keep your camera ready to capture some of the best glacier calvings in Spitsbergen. Deep in the fjord, the highly active Lilliehöök Glacier awaits you. Listen in awe to the rumble as large pieces crash into the icy waters below. A Zodiac excursion to nearby Ny-London, an abandoned mining settlement, offers an ideal spot for a guided walk. Encounters with wildlife, such as the endemic Svalbard reindeer, may be possible here. After an overnight cruise, you wake up to the impressive sight of the magnificent Monaco Glacier, another productive iceberg-producing glacier. To make this even more exciting, help your expedition team search the coastlines and ice edges for marine mammals. Possible landing sites include Texas Bar, Worsleyneset, and Alicehamna. In Smeerenburg, you can see the remains of an abandoned settlement founded almost 400 years ago by Dutch whalers. Here, at one of the northernmost outposts of Europe, you have time to go ashore and learn more about Spitsbergen's whaling history. Afterwards, the cruise to Magdalenefjorden rewards you with panoramic views of snow-covered mountains and massive glaciers reflecting in the crystal-clear waters. We hope to round off the day at Alkhornet, where you can marvel at the towering cliffs with nesting seabirds such as fulmars and thick-billed murres (Brünnich's guillemots). Encounters with reindeer are also possible here. Later in the evening, exchange stories one last time with your fellow travelers and crew at the captain's farewell dinner.
Day 7: Disembark in Longyearbyen and Fly to Helsinki
The moment of farewell has come. Your adventure ends as it began, in the frontier-style settlement of Longyearbyen. This small but significant town, serving as a starting point for many Arctic expeditions, has certainly left you with impressive impressions. From here, we organize your transfer to the airport, where you will take your return flight to Helsinki. This group charter flight is part of the transfer package we have arranged for you. As you set off to leave the Arctic behind, you will surely take many memories and experiences with you that will accompany you for a long time.
