Itinerary: Spitsbergen Circumnavigation: A Rite of Passage
Day 1: Arrival in Helsinki
Your Arctic adventure begins in Helsinki, renowned for its extraordinary architecture and intriguing mix of Eastern and Western influences. If you arrive early, take the opportunity to explore the numerous museums, galleries, and restaurants. Relax in a traditional Finnish sauna or stroll through the vibrant Design District before retreating to your comfortable hotel.
Day 2: Flight to Longyearbyen, Svalbard, and Embarkation
In the morning, you will transfer to the airport for your private charter flight to Longyearbyen, the largest settlement in Spitsbergen. As your ship sets sail, enjoy your first view of the rugged, glacier-topped mountains rising majestically from the cold waters. Upon arrival in Longyearbyen, you will have the chance to explore the charming settlement. Wander along the colorful wooden houses and visit the Svalbard Museum, which offers fascinating insights into the history and nature of the region. Here, you can learn more about the wildlife, whaling history, and the culture of Arctic explorers. Afterward, board your ship, where you can settle into your cabin and enjoy your first dinner on deck while taking in the stunning views of the surrounding fjords.

Day 3 to 13: Exploring Spitsbergen
Every day brings a new adventure as we begin our journey northward and around the island of Spitsbergen, exploring smaller, outlying islands. We plan a complete circumnavigation of Spitsbergen, but if conditions allow, we will also attempt to reach the outer islands of the Svalbard archipelago. Each expedition will be unique, depending on weather and ice conditions, but some of the places we may visit include the 14th of July Glacier, Ny-London, Phippsøya, Alkefjellet, and the seldom-visited Kvitøya. These names may seem strange to you, but each location has its own unique appeal. Spitsbergen is abundant in natural beauty, where colorful tundra meadows are complemented by immense glaciers. For birdwatchers, the 14th of July Bay is home to puffins, purple sandpipers, black-legged kittiwakes, and many other species, while the cliffs of Alkefjellet are teeming with nesting Brunnich's guillemots. Always have your camera ready to capture the elusive reindeer as we visit sites like Ny-London and Alkhornet. The search for the iconic polar bear is a constant activity for your Expedition Team. A significant part of appreciating Spitsbergen comes from understanding its history—not just how people live today but also how this land was first explored. Whaling was a key industry, and you will see remains of outposts from the 16th century, along with other evidence of whaling at landing sites such as Smeerenburg. During your explorations, you will have the opportunity to go ashore and visit the fascinating remnants of whaling stations, learning more about the challenges and adventures faced by early whalers. These unique insights into the region's history will deepen your understanding of Arctic culture and its development.
Day 14: Disembark in Longyearbyen and Fly to Helsinki
Your adventure concludes in the frontier-style settlement of Longyearbyen. From here, we will transfer you to the airport for your return flight to Helsinki, included in the transfer package. Take this time to gather final memories of the breathtaking landscapes and the adventures you've experienced as you prepare for your journey home.
Day 15: Departure and Home Flight
After a final breakfast, you have the opportunity to make your way to the airport for your return flight home. Alternatively, you can extend your stay and explore Finland’s culturally rich capital on your own if you have made prior arrangements.
Additional Information for Expedition Cruises: The itinerary and route described are provided as examples only and may be adjusted or changed at any time due to weather, ice and tidal conditions, as well as for safety reasons. Specific landing sites, locations or route sections therefore cannot be guaranteed. The captain and expedition leader will make all final decisions regarding the route, landings and daily programme on site. Wildlife sightings cannot be guaranteed. Landings and Zodiac excursions depend on local conditions and regulatory requirements. Optional activities have very limited availability; we recommend booking them well in advance, often weeks or months before departure, as they may be fully booked by the time of travel; their operation depends on weather, ice and safety conditions as well as minimum participation. Polar regions are remote and dynamic natural environments, therefore programme changes or delays may occur.
