Itinerary: South Georgia and Antarctic Peninsula: Penguin Safari
Day 1: Arrive in Ushuaia, Argentina
Your expedition begins in Ushuaia, nestled between the Andes and the Beagle Channel. Take the opportunity to explore the town, wander through the centre, visit local cafés and shops, or enjoy the surrounding natural scenery. The combination of mountains, water, and city life offers a first impression of this remote region.
Day 2: Embarkation
Embark in the late afternoon. The ship navigates the Beagle Channel, a scenic waterway within the Tierra del Fuego Archipelago. As you pass the coastline and mountains, you can admire the varied landscapes and gradually prepare for the upcoming journey into sub-Antarctic and Antarctic regions.

Day 3 to 6: At Sea
On the way to South Georgia, you spend several days at sea. Observe seabirds, attend introductory lectures, and prepare for upcoming landings. One of the first signs that you are approaching South Georgia is the sight of birds around a group of rocky towers known as the Shag Rocks. This area is also a good place to look out for whales when conditions allow.
Day 7 to 9: South Georgia
South Georgia is renowned for its impressive colonies of king penguins, seabirds, and seals. Landings also include visits to historic sites such as Grytviken, a former whaling station and the final resting place of Sir Ernest Shackleton. Landings are subject to prevailing weather conditions, ensuring safe and engaging encounters with the island’s wildlife and cultural history.
Day 10 & 11: At Sea
After visiting South Georgia, the voyage continues towards the Antarctic Peninsula. While at sea, you can observe seabirds and attend presentations by the expedition team, which provide background on the wildlife and landscapes you will encounter on the landings. Whales may also be sighted under favourable conditions.
Day 12 to 15: Antarctic Peninsula
You reach the Antarctic Peninsula, a region of striking icebergs, fjords, and rugged coastlines. Zodiac excursions and landings provide opportunities to observe wildlife and explore the landscape. Penguin colonies may include gentoo, Adélie, and chinstrap penguins. Seals such as Weddell, Antarctic fur, crabeater, and leopard seals can also be seen. Under favourable conditions, Antarctic minke, humpback, or orca whales may be observed. The expedition team accompanies all excursions, providing information on wildlife, landscapes, and history, while ensuring safe landings. Optional activities include sea kayaking or paddling, and guests may participate in the Polar Plunge, taking a dip in the icy Antarctic waters.
Day 16 & 17: Crossing the Drake Passage
The return journey to Ushuaia begins across the Drake Passage. Spend time on deck observing seabirds and whales, enjoying the vastness of the ocean, or attending the final presentations by the expedition team. The days at sea provide an opportunity to reflect on your experiences and prepare for arrival in Ushuaia.
Day 18: Disembark in Ushuaia
In the morning, you arrive back in Ushuaia. After disembarkation, the expedition concludes, and you may either begin your journey home or continue exploring the city.
Additional Information for Expedition Cruises: The itinerary and route described are provided as examples only and may be adjusted or changed at any time due to weather, ice and tidal conditions, as well as for safety reasons. Specific landing sites, locations or route sections therefore cannot be guaranteed. The captain and expedition leader will make all final decisions regarding the route, landings and daily programme on site. Wildlife sightings cannot be guaranteed. Landings and Zodiac excursions depend on local conditions and regulatory requirements. Optional activities have very limited availability; we recommend booking them well in advance, often weeks or months before departure, as they may be fully booked by the time of travel; their operation depends on weather, ice and safety conditions as well as minimum participation. Polar regions are remote and dynamic natural environments, therefore programme changes or delays may occur.
