Itinerary: South Georgia and Antarctic Peninsula: Penguin Safari
Day 1: Arrive in Ushuaia, Argentina
Begin your journey in Ushuaia, a small yet lively port at the end of South America. This vibrant city, often referred to as the "end of the world," serves as an ideal starting point to explore southern Patagonia and prepare for your upcoming adventure. Surrounded by breathtaking natural beauty, the majestic Andes provide a dramatic backdrop. Whether you choose mountain activities like hiking or enjoying the impressive views, or prefer a more leisurely pace, there are plenty of options to suit your mood. You might also want to indulge in local delicacies, such as handmade chocolate in a cozy café in town, where you can relax and enjoy the unique atmosphere of this remote yet charming place.
Day 2: Embark
Embarkation takes place in the late afternoon, marking the beginning of an exciting journey. As you board your ship, a sense of adventure fills the air, setting the tone for the voyage ahead. Once everyone is on board, the ship elegantly sets sail, navigating through the historic Beagle Channel. This remarkable waterway, which traverses the Tierra del Fuego archipelago, offers a unique perspective on this remote and rugged region at the southernmost tip of South America. As the ship glides through the channel, passengers can feel an atmosphere of anticipation, with the promise of new experiences and impressive landscapes waiting beyond the horizon.
Day 3 to 6: At Sea
During the days at sea, there are numerous activities to keep you engaged and entertained. Take the opportunity to identify the seabirds gliding gracefully alongside the ship or participate in the dynamic presentations by your expedition team. These lectures not only prepare you for the safety procedures for Zodiac cruises and landings but also provide valuable guidance on how to make the most of your optional sea kayaking adventures (for an additional fee). These kayaking tours offer an especially intimate way to experience the impressive beauty of Antarctica. If conditions permit, the first sign that you are approaching South Georgia is the sight of birds around a group of rocky towers known as Shag Rocks. Keep your binoculars and cameras ready to photograph these impressive rock formations that majestically rise from the icy ocean waters. These rocks are a popular resting place for cormorants and prions, and due to the nutrient-rich upwellings in the area, it is also an excellent spot to look out for whales.
Day 7 to 9: South Georgia
After enjoying South Georgia from afar, we head to its numerous beaches to find a bay for your first excursion. The landing sites are diverse and largely determined by the weather conditions of your journey. The places you visit offer wildlife encounters unparalleled elsewhere on Earth. South Georgia is one of the most fertile breeding grounds in the world for subantarctic wildlife, with beaches covered in penguins and seals. It won't take long for you to realize that you are in a birdwatcher's paradise, as numerous nesting seabirds, albatrosses, and petrels can be seen here. You will find that South Georgia, once a popular base for whalers and sealers, is also scattered with abandoned relics and evidence of human activities from past centuries. Your expedition team will help bring these days to life as you visit old whaling stations and enjoy presentations about South Georgia then and now. One of the most significant sites you will visit on the island is Grytviken. This settlement is one of the first whaling stations established in subantarctic waters. Grytviken holds a special charm, especially as it is the burial site of Sir Ernest Shackleton, one of the most famous Antarctic explorers.
Day 10 & 11: At Sea
Bid farewell to the king penguins as you make your way to your next destination: Antarctica! During this exciting journey, your days at sea are filled with a variety of informative presentations and interactive workshops. These sessions are carefully led by your knowledgeable expedition team, focusing on preparing you for the impressive wildlife and fascinating landscapes that will surround you upon your arrival on the 7th continent. Each presentation is designed to deepen your understanding and appreciation of the unique environment you will explore, ensuring you are well-equipped to fully enjoy the wonders of this remote and pristine region of the world.
Day 12 to 15: Antarctic Peninsula
The most common reaction upon arriving in Antarctica is a sense of awe and wonder. Putting this experience into words is difficult, as few places are as untouched and constant as Antarctica. You will discover a land of extremes. In one moment, you will be overwhelmed by a sense of complete isolation and silence, and in the next, you will be inspired by nature as a calving glacier crashes into a brilliant blue sea or a curious penguin waddles by to observe you. Your expedition team will take care of you on every excursion, whether it's Zodiac cruising, visiting a historic site, or observing penguin colonies. Here you will find chinstrap, Adélie, and gentoo penguins, as well as Weddell, fur, crabeater, and leopard seals. Keep an eye out for Antarctic whales, such as minke whales, during the Zodiac cruise. Each day and each excursion will present you with a new variety of creatures to delight and occupy your camera. As exciting as the Zodiac excursions and landings are, you might treat yourself to a very special Antarctic experience by booking an optional paddling excursion (for an additional fee) or setting reason aside and taking the Polar Plunge into the Antarctic waters!
Day 16 & 17: Crossing the Drake Passage
After more than a dozen days filled with unique wildlife encounters and remarkable landscapes, your journey home begins. Crossing the Drake Passage is your unofficial initiation ritual. Spend time on deck and look out for seabirds and whales, enjoy the lectures from your expedition team, or simply relax and reminisce about your experiences.
Day 18: Disembark in Ushuaia
In the morning, you will reach Ushuaia, the southernmost city in the world, often referred to as the gateway to Antarctica. This arrival time offers you the opportunity to either continue your journey or begin your journey home. Ushuaia, nestled between the snow-capped peaks of the Andes and the sparkling waters of the Beagle Channel, provides a unique backdrop for the conclusion of your journey. Whether you choose to further explore the city, sample the local cuisine, or simply enjoy the impressive landscape, Ushuaia has something to offer everyone. If you decide to head home, you can depart with lasting memories of your journey to this remote and fascinating region of the world.
