Itinerary: Penguins of the Far South: Falklands, South Georgia and Antarctica
Day 1: Arrive in Ushuaia, Argentina
Your starting point is Ushuaia, Argentina, located in the Tierra del Fuego region. The town combines cultural attractions with a scenic setting and offers museums, cafés, restaurants and shops. Visitors may explore the nearby Tierra del Fuego National Park or visit the Martial Glacier. Walks in the surrounding countryside are possible, as are short excursions within the town itself. Ushuaia therefore offers both cultural and nature-based experiences at the beginning of the expedition.

Day 2: Embarkation
During embarkation, you become acquainted with the ship and your fellow travellers. The expedition team ensures that you feel safe and well looked after on board. Initial sightings of whales or penguins may be possible, depending on the route and weather conditions.
Day 3: At Sea
During the days at sea, presentations on photography, wildlife, glaciology and history are offered. Between lectures, you may enjoy the views and watch for passing seabirds and marine animals. Time at sea combines informative content with opportunities to relax.
Day 4 & 5: Falkland Islands (Islas Malvinas)
The Falkland Islands consist of the two main islands, East Falkland and West Falkland. Stanley (Port Stanley) is a frequent landing site with a distinct British outpost character, historic buildings and museums. On the Falklands, Magellanic penguins, gentoo penguins and southern rockhopper penguins can be observed. King penguins are occasionally present as well. There is also the opportunity to see black-browed albatrosses and endemic bird species such as the flightless Cobb’s wren and the Falkland steamer duck. The expedition team provides information about the islands’ flora and fauna.
Day 6 & 7: At Sea
On the way to South Georgia, you enter the region of the Antarctic Convergence, where cold Antarctic waters meet warmer sub-Antarctic waters. This nutrient-rich zone attracts whales, seals and seabirds. The team highlights opportunities to observe seabirds and other marine life.
Day 8 to 11: South Georgia
South Georgia is a remote, mountainous island historically known for whaling and sealing. Today, wildlife populations are recovering, and remains of former whaling stations are still visible. The grave of Sir Ernest Shackleton in Grytviken is an important historical site, along with the local museum and church. South Georgia is known for its high concentration of wildlife: on one beach you may observe colonies of king penguins, and on another southern elephant seals. The island’s grasslands, mountains and beaches play an important role in the breeding and survival of various species.
Day 12 & 13: At Sea
During the voyage towards Antarctica, presentations, workshops and social activities provide further information about the region. If conditions permit, a stop at the South Orkney Islands may be possible, offering a visit to this remote part of Antarctica.
Day 14 to 17: South Shetland Islands and Antarctic Peninsula
In this region, you experience largely untouched natural landscapes. The expedition team accompanies landings, Zodiac cruises and visits to historic sites. Wildlife species include chinstrap, Adélie and gentoo penguins, as well as Weddell, crabeater and leopard seals. Minke whales may be sighted during Zodiac excursions. Optionally, you may join a paddling excursion or take part in a plunge into the icy water.
Day 18 & 19: Crossing the Drake Passage
The return journey across the Drake Passage provides time to reflect on the experiences of the expedition. The passage is known for its changeable weather conditions and open ocean, forming the final stage of the maritime journey.
Day 20: Disembarkation in Ushuaia
After breakfast, the expedition concludes in Ushuaia. Transfers to the airport are arranged, while those wishing to remain in the town may continue exploring independently.
Accommodation: Overnight stays take place on board the Ocean Explorer in modern cabins. Shared areas provide opportunities to socialise with fellow travellers and enjoy views of the surroundings.
Additional Information: In addition to the expedition activities, the ship offers comfortable on-board facilities including various cabin categories, each with a private bathroom, several lounges and observation areas, a library, and fitness and wellness facilities including a sauna and outdoor whirlpools. Catering on board includes all daily meals, snacks, soft drinks and juices. Coffee, tea, cocoa and water are available free of charge at all times. During bar service hours and with dinner, selected alcoholic beverages such as beer, standard wines and certain cocktails are included in the price, while premium wines and champagne are available at an additional cost. Limited Wi-Fi access is included. You will also receive a weatherproof expedition jacket for use during landings, which you may keep. International flights, travel insurance and optional activities such as paddling or kayaking excursions are not included.
Places are limited and demand is high. We therefore recommend making an enquiry in good time to secure your personal Antarctic experience. We are happy to assist with any questions or with planning your journey.
Additional Information for Expedition Cruises: The itinerary and route described are provided as examples only and may be adjusted or changed at any time due to weather, ice and tidal conditions, as well as for safety reasons. Specific landing sites, locations or route sections therefore cannot be guaranteed. The captain and expedition leader will make all final decisions regarding the route, landings and daily programme on site. Wildlife sightings cannot be guaranteed. Landings and Zodiac excursions depend on local conditions and regulatory requirements. Optional activities have very limited availability; we recommend booking them well in advance, often weeks or months before departure, as they may be fully booked by the time of travel; their operation depends on weather, ice and safety conditions as well as minimum participation. Polar regions are remote and dynamic natural environments, therefore programme changes or delays may occur.
