Itinerary: Penguins of the Far South: Falklands, South Georgia and Antarctica
Day 1: Arrive in Ushuaia, Argentina
Your gateway for this expedition is Ushuaia, Argentina. Nestled within the stunning Tierra del Fuego archipelago, Ushuaia exudes a charming small-town feel while offering a delightful array of shops, museums, cafés, and restaurants for you to explore and enjoy before embarking on your voyage. The town's unique blend of local culture and natural beauty provides a perfect backdrop for your adventure. For those with a taste for exploration, the nearby Tierra del Fuego National Park and the majestic Martial Glacier present a wealth of outdoor activities, such as invigorating hikes through striking landscapes. Whether you choose to immerse yourself in the vibrant local scene or venture into the wild, Ushuaia promises a memorable start to your journey.
Day 2: Embark
As you embark on this thrilling journey, the anticipation steadily grows, filling the air with a palpable sense of excitement. It's time to trade your land legs for sea legs, as you step aboard and begin to meet and greet your fellow travelers, each one as eager as you to explore the wonders that lie ahead. Take this opportunity to get acquainted with your ship, your home for the duration of this remarkable adventure. Every Antarctic expedition is unique, presenting new opportunities and experiences, making embarkation day just as exhilarating for your Expedition Team as it is for you. On board, your dedicated team will be there to ensure your comfort and safety, while also working tirelessly to help make your wildlife dreams come true. Whether it's spotting majestic whales or observing playful penguins, they are committed to making this journey memorable.
Day 3: At Sea
During your days at sea, you can expect a varied program designed by your Expedition Team. The experts deliver exciting presentations on topics such as photography, wildlife, glaciology, and history, providing you with deeper insights into the fascinating aspects of your journey. Between presentations, you have the opportunity to stay on deck and keep an eye out for passing wildlife. You might spot majestic birds or other marine creatures native to these waters. Alternatively, you can use the time to mingle with your fellow travelers at the bar and make new acquaintances over a refreshing drink. These days at sea offer you the perfect balance between education and relaxation as you enjoy the vastness of the ocean.
Day 4 & 5: Falkland Islands (Islas Malvinas)
Upon your arrival in the Falklands (Malvinas), your camera will get its first real workout capturing the abundant wildlife and rugged feel of this sub-Antarctic region. The archipelago contains two main islands, East Falkland and West Falkland, which you will explore during daily excursions. Stanley, also known as Port Stanley, is often a favored landing site, as the town offers a unique British outpost feel, complete with eclectic charm. You’ll be free to explore, grab a pint at the local pub or visit the cathedral and museum. In terms of wildlife, the archipelago is home to Magellanic, gentoo and southern rockhopper penguins. If you’re lucky, you may even spot king penguins here as well! You can expect to see black-browed albatross, plus two endemic bird species—the flightless Falkland steamer duck and, possibly, the elusive Cobb’s wren. Your expert education team will enrich your understanding of the local flora and fauna, making the most out of your time in the Falklands. As you traverse the islands, each day will bring new opportunities to immerse yourself in the natural beauty and unique culture of this remote destination. The landscapes are as captivating as the wildlife, with rolling hills and dramatic coastlines providing a stunning backdrop to your adventures. Whether you're an avid birdwatcher, a photography enthusiast, or simply someone who appreciates the wonders of nature, the Falklands offer a truly inspiring experience. Your journey through this remarkable archipelago will be both educational and inspiring, leaving you with memories to cherish long after you return home.
Day 6 & 7: At Sea
As you sail southeast to South Georgia, you officially enter Antarctic waters once you cross the Antarctic Convergence, an invisible biological boundary surrounding the continent. At this meeting of the oceans, where the cold Antarctic waters mix and mingle with the warmer waters of the Indian, Pacific, and Atlantic Oceans, the abundance of krill is nourished, attracting whales, seals, and bird species to this part of the world. Your Expedition Team will notify you when you cross this invisible yet significant line and also keep an eye out for the seabirds and marine life that frequently visit this nutrient-rich area.
Day 8 to 11: South Georgia
This remote, mountainous island was a popular stop for many historic Antarctic expeditions and was once known for whale– and seal–hunting. Today, island wildlife populations are rebounding, but you’ll still see remnants of old whaling stations and other abandoned outposts. One significant and historic site is the grave of the great explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton. You can visit his grave at the settlement of Grytviken, which is also home to an old whaling station, plus a museum, gift shop, church and small research station. Although South Georgia’s history is an important attraction to the island, its remarkable densities of wildlife make it truly memorable. Each landing you make on South Georgia, often referred to as the Galapagos of the Southern Sea, will open your eyes to the wondrous lives of new, enthralling creatures. One day you may see colonies with hundreds of thousands of pairs of king penguins waddling on shore, and the next, you may visit another beach inhabited by hundreds of fur or elephant seals. The grasses, mountains and beaches of South Georgia all play an important role in the breeding and survival of different species on the island. This fragile and interwoven relationship is something your Expedition Team will instill in you during your time here.
Day 12 & 13: At Sea
Say goodbye to the king penguins as you leave for your next destination: Antarctica! As you embark on this exciting journey, your days at sea are filled with a variety of engaging presentations, interactive workshops, and lively social activities, all thoughtfully curated and led by your knowledgeable Expedition Team. These activities are designed to enrich your understanding and appreciation of the unique environment you are about to explore. If conditions allow, we may attempt landfall on the South Orkney Islands, which will be our first official stop in Antarctica. This potential landing offers a thrilling opportunity to set foot on this remote and pristine part of the world, adding an extra layer of anticipation and excitement to your voyage.
Day 14 to 17: South Shetland Islands and Antarctic Peninsula
Upon reaching the Antarctic Continent, the most common reaction is an overwhelming sense of reverence and awe. This experience is truly beyond words, as few places on Earth remain as untouched and enduring as Antarctica. Here, you will discover a land of extremes. At one moment, you may find yourself enveloped in a profound feeling of complete isolation and silence, while in the next, you could be inspired by the raw power of nature as a calving glacier crashes into the brilliant blue sea or a curious penguin waddles by to observe the human visitors. Your dedicated Expedition Team will ensure your safety and enjoyment during each excursion, whether you are Zodiac cruising, visiting a historical site, or mingling with penguin colonies. The region is home to Chinstrap, Adélie, and gentoo penguins, as well as Weddell, fur, crabeater, and leopard seals. During Zodiac cruises, keep a keen eye out for Antarctic whales, such as minkes, as you may have the chance for an intimate encounter with these majestic creatures. Each day and each excursion will present a new array of fascinating creatures to entertain you and keep your camera busy. As thrilling as the Zodiac excursions and landings are, you might choose to indulge in an extra-special Antarctic experience by participating in an optional paddling excursion (available at an additional cost) or casting reason aside to take the exhilarating Polar Plunge into the frigid Antarctic waters!
Day 18 & 19: Crossing the Drake Passage
After more than two weeks of impressive wildlife encounters, your journey home begins. Crossing the Drake Passage serves as your unofficial initiation ritual, rounding off your Antarctic adventure. Take advantage of the last moments to celebrate with your fellow travelers and enjoy the silence of the sea for as long as possible. This passage is not only a physical journey but also an opportunity to reflect on the experiences of the past days and process the impressions you have gathered in this unique and untouched region of the world. As the ship gently glides over the waves, you have the chance to absorb the tranquility and vastness of the ocean before returning to everyday life.
Day 20: Disembarkation in Ushuaia
After a final breakfast on board the ship, the time has come to bid farewell to the Expedition Team. The memories of the shared experiences and the impressive landscapes will surely linger for a long time. For those departing on the first flights home, airport transfers are organized to ensure a smooth transition. Other guests who wish to spend some more time in Ushuaia will be taken to the city, where they have the opportunity to further explore the southernmost city in the world. Whether you travel directly home or linger a little longer, the farewell from this remarkable journey will surely be accompanied by a sense of gratitude and fulfillment.
