Northern Lights in Scoresbysund 25% Advantage

This expedition to East Greenland combines Iceland’s varied coastal landscapes with in-depth exploration of the extensive fjord system of Scoresby Sund (Kangertittivaq), the largest fjord system on Earth. The voyage begins and ends in Reykjavík and crosses the Denmark Strait to Greenland’s remote east coast. Here, steep basalt mountains, glacier tongues, drifting sea ice and large icebergs shape the scenery. Landings and Zodiac cruises provide opportunities to explore the tundra, historical remains of early Inuit cultures, and to visit the small settlement of Ittoqqortoormiit, one of the most isolated inhabited places in Greenland. The expedition team accompanies the journey with lectures on the region’s nature, history and culture, as well as guided shore excursions. Particular emphasis is placed on observing landscapes and wildlife, with good opportunities for photography in the clear Arctic light. Optional sea-kayaking programmes offer additional perspectives along the coastline. In the tundra and along the fjords, animals such as musk oxen, Arctic foxes and Arctic hares may sometimes be seen, while seabirds and marine mammals are regularly encountered in the surrounding waters. During the darker evening hours, there may also be opportunities to observe the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) in the Arctic sky.

Itinerary: Northern Lights in Scoresby Sund

Day 1: Arrival in Reykjavík, Iceland
The journey begins with arrival in Reykjavík, Iceland’s capital. After check-in at a hotel included in the tour price, you will have time to explore the city and prepare for the expedition ahead.

Day 2: Embarkation on the Sea Spirit
On the second day, you will be transferred to the ship and embark the Sea Spirit. Following a welcome briefing and safety procedures, the vessel sets course for the Denmark Strait. The crew introduces the expedition team before sailing north.

Day 3–8: Scoresby Sund (East Greenland)
Over the coming days, you will explore the extensive fjord system of Scoresby Sund. Weather and ice conditions determine the exact itinerary. Planned activities include Zodiac cruises along the coastline and possible landings at historical sites and in the tundra with its flora and fauna. The expedition team presents lectures on the nature, culture and history of the region. The Aurora Borealis may be visible during the long Arctic nights under suitable conditions, although sightings cannot be guaranteed.

Day 9: Return voyage through the Denmark Strait
The journey from Scoresby Sund back towards Iceland begins. During the sea day, onboard lectures and observation of seabirds and, at times, whales provide activity and interest. There may also be further opportunities to observe the Northern Lights in the evening, depending on weather and light conditions.

Day 10: Westfjords region, Iceland
The next stage of the programme focuses on Iceland’s Westfjords (Vestfirðir). This sparsely populated region is characterised by fjords, steep coastlines and diverse wildlife. Depending on conditions, activities along the coast may include observation of marine animals and birds.

Day 11: Disembarkation in Reykjavík, Iceland
After breakfast, disembarkation takes place in Reykjavík. An organised transfer to the airport or to the city centre is available should you wish to extend your stay in Iceland.
