Day 3: The Snares – North East Island
The Snares are the nearest Subantarctic Islands to New Zealand and were aptly named due to their hazards for sailing ships. The island group consists of two main islands and a cluster of five additional islands, all uninhabited and under the highest conservation protection. More seabirds nest here than in all of the British Isles combined. We plan to arrive in the morning, and as we approach the landing area, you may already spot the first birds in the sky. Since landings are not permitted, we will undertake a Zodiac cruise along the sheltered eastern side of the main island, weather and sea conditions permitting. In the sheltered bays, we should see endemic species such as the Snares Crested Penguin and the Snares Island Tomtit. Be ready to capture photos of the hundreds of thousands of Sooty Shearwaters nesting here, along with the majestic Buller’s Albatrosses that begin breeding in early January. The opportunity to see the forests of the large tree daisy Olearia lyallii, which forms a protective canopy over much of the island group, will be a highlight.
Day 4: Auckland Islands – Enderby Island
The Auckland Islands were formed by two volcanic eruptions approximately 10-25 million years ago. They have been eroded and sculpted by glaciation. Enderby Island is one of the most beautiful islands in this group and an outstanding location for wildlife and bird watching. The island was cleared of all introduced animals in 1994, and both the bird and plant life are gradually recovering. We plan to land at Sandy Bay, one of the breeding sites for the rare New Zealand Sea Lion. Here, you will have the opportunity to observe the impressive beachmaster bulls defending their harems from younger males. During your time on the island, there will be options for various walks, ranging from shorter to longer trails. The walking is relatively easy, with a boardwalk leading to the dramatic western cliffs. Keep an eye out for the diverse birdlife, including the Southern Royal Albatross, Auckland Island Tomtit, and various penguin species that breed here. The incredible flora and fauna will leave you with unforgettable impressions.
Day 5: At Sea
As we navigate through the "Furious Fifties" in the turbulent Southern Ocean, we will learn more about the flora and fauna as we prepare for our arrival at Macquarie Island. Along the way, there will be numerous opportunities for birdwatching. We will aim to spot various species of albatross as well as petrel species, including the Wandering Albatross and Royal Albatross. In this region, many bird species can be observed, and with a bit of luck, we may encounter the Fairy Prion, Fulmar Prion, and Antarctic Prion. Keep an eye out for additional species present in these waters, including the Soft-plumaged Petrel and Grey-faced Petrel, while we sail through the fascinating area.
Days 6 to 7: Macquarie Island
Macquarie Island is renowned for its unique geology and was granted World Heritage status in 1997. This island is home to four species of penguins, including the Royal Penguin, which is found nowhere else in the world. During our two days on the island, you will have the chance to observe the penguins and the massive Southern Elephant Seals. Landings at two different sites will provide you with the opportunity to engage with researchers from the research base and learn more about ongoing projects. Enjoy the breathtaking beauty of this special island as you explore various walking trails and observe the impressive wildlife. Witnessing the penguins building their nests and the seals lounging on the beaches will be an unforgettable experience.
Day 8: At Sea
On our way to Campbell Island, you will have the chance to relax and reflect on the experiences from Macquarie Island. Keep an eye out for whales and albatrosses, or attend a lecture while enjoying the passing landscapes. This is also a great opportunity to review your photos and prepare for the upcoming adventures.
Day 9: Campbell Island – Perseverance Harbour
Today we explore Campbell Island, rich in history. Discovered in 1810, the island has seen remarkable vegetation recovery after the removal of all introduced animals. We will offer various walking options to enjoy the unique flora and fauna, including the Southern Royal Albatrosses. During the hike, keep an eye out for different plant species and enjoy spectacular views of the surrounding cliffs and the sea. The walks are designed to accommodate both experienced hikers and beginners, ensuring that everyone can appreciate the island's beauty.
Day 10: At Sea
Another day at sea as we look for various bird species while nearing the Antipodes Islands. This is a great day for pelagic birdwatching. Enjoy the views and prepare for the upcoming adventures. Use this time to relax or learn more about the bird species we will observe in the coming days.
Day 11: Antipodes Islands
The Antipodes Islands are of volcanic origin and boast an impressive bird population. We plan to take a Zodiac cruise along the coastline to observe the endemic species. Keep an eye out for the Antipodes Parakeet and Erect-crested Penguins. During the boat ride, you will have the chance to enjoy the stunning coastline and take photos of the birds living in the area. Our experienced guides will provide interesting information about the flora and fauna of the islands.
Day 12: Bounty Islands
We arrive at the Bounty Islands, discovered by Captain Bligh. Here, numerous bird species can be observed during a Zodiac cruise. The wild and unspoiled nature of these islands offers you a unique opportunity to experience wildlife in its natural habitat. Keep your cameras ready as we cruise along the coast and observe the various birds that breed here.
Day 13: Pyramid Rock and South East Island
As we continue toward the Chatham Islands, we will have the opportunity to observe the Chatham Island Taiko, one of the rarest bird species in New Zealand. We will cruise along the coastline to view various endemic species. This region is known for its exceptional nature reserves, and during the ride, you will have the chance to enjoy stunning landscapes and learn more about the local species.
Day 14: Chatham Islands – Waitangi
Today we visit one of the original private reserves on the main island, where there is a good chance to see the endemic Chatham Island Pigeon and Warbler. We will travel by local bus to the reserve, enjoying the scenery along the way. During the journey, you will have the opportunity to learn about the region's history before we arrive at the reserve and experience the wildlife up close.
Days 15 to 16: At Sea
On our way to Bluff, we will cross the Chatham Rise. It will be a day full of birdwatching, and we will enjoy a farewell dinner as we cover the last miles of our journey. Use this time to reflect on the highlights of your expedition and gather the final impressions from this unforgettable trip.
Day 17: Invercargill/Queenstown
Early this morning, we will arrive at the Port of Bluff. After a final breakfast, we bid farewell to our fellow travelers and take a complimentary coach transfer to either Invercargill or Queenstown Airports. Please do not book any onward travel until after midday from Invercargill and after 3 PM from Queenstown.
