This 11-day expedition takes you from Ushuaia to the Antarctic Peninsula and the South Shetland Islands. During the days at sea, as well as during landings and Zodiac trips, you will have the opportunity to observe whales, seals and penguins and get to know different coastal sections, bays and islands up close. Travel Itinerary: Antarctica - Discovery and Learning Journey
Day 1: Arrival in Ushuaia and embarkation
Your journey begins in Ushuaia (Argentina), the southernmost city in the country and one of the southernmost permanently inhabited cities in South America. It is located at the extreme southern tip of the continent on Tierra del Fuego, a region often referred to as the “End of the World”. In the afternoon, embarkation takes place. Your expedition ship then travels through the Beagle Channel, lined with mountains, and heads towards the open ocean as you spend the first hours of your voyage on board.

Day 2: Drake Passage
Over the next two days, you cross the Drake Passage and gain an impression of the conditions under which early polar travellers navigated these waters. Cool sea air, fresh breezes and the open ocean characterise this part of the journey. With some luck, whales such as fin whales may be observed along the way. After crossing the Antarctic Convergence – an oceanographic boundary of the Southern Ocean where cold Antarctic and warmer sub-Antarctic waters meet – the marine ecosystem changes noticeably. In this zone of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current, biological productivity increases, which is also reflected in a rich birdlife. Species frequently observed include wandering albatrosses, grey-headed albatrosses, black-browed albatrosses, sooty albatrosses, cape petrels, southern fulmars, Wilson’s storm petrels, blue petrels and snow petrels.
Day 3: Antarctic Peninsula
Grey mountain peaks covered in snow rise into the sky, while blue-white icebergs and glaciers form the scenery. Vegetation is limited to mosses, lichens and algae, yet the region supports abundant wildlife. Your route first leads to the snow-covered Melchior Islands. You then sail through the Schollaert Channel between Brabant Island and Anvers Island. Depending on conditions, various sites may be visited, including Danco Island with its penguin colonies, Neko Harbour with impressive glaciers, Paradise Bay, the historic station Port Lockroy, as well as the Pleneau Island and Petermann Island, known for their ice landscapes. In Wilhelmina Bay lies the wreck of the whaling ship Guvernøren. Charlotte Bay may also form part of the route. Detailed planning always depends on weather, ice and sea conditions, particularly in the Drake Passage, and therefore requires a degree of flexibility.
Day 4: Return Journey
On the return crossing of the Drake Passage, numerous seabirds once again accompany the ship as it travels north. Gradually, you approach South America. Arrival in Ushuaia marks the end of your expedition. You disembark with a range of impressions and experiences and continue your onward or homeward journey.
Accommodation: During the voyage, you stay on board a comfortable expedition ship offering various cabin categories – from shared cabins with portholes to suites with private balconies. All cabins are functionally and comfortably equipped, allowing you to rest during the sea days. On board, you can make use of the ship’s facilities while observing the landscapes and wildlife of Antarctica. Prices vary depending on cabin category and travel period.
Additional Information: The voyage includes the ship journey with overnight stays on board, all meals, as well as the landings and activities outlined in the programme. Rubber boots are provided on loan. A luggage transfer to the ship on the day of departure and a group transfer to Ushuaia Airport after disembarkation are also included. Flights, land arrangements before and after the voyage, passport and visa costs, meals ashore and personal insurance are not included. Gratuities for the onboard staff are not included.

Polar regions are remote and dynamic natural environments, therefore programme changes or delays may occur.
