Travel Itinerary: Antarctica - Discovery and Learning Journey
Day 1: Antarctica - Discovery and Learning Journey
This journey to the Antarctic Peninsula and the South Shetland Islands takes you to an impressive landscape characterized by dark, rugged rocks and pure white snow. Here, you'll find a fantastic variety of animals living in this unique environment. Welcome majestic whales, curious seals, and thousands of penguins that call this untouched wilderness home. Your journey begins in a place known as the end of the world: Ushuaia in Argentina. This city, considered one of the southernmost in the world, is located at the southernmost tip of South America. In the afternoon, you start your expedition from this small place on Tierra del Fuego, itself referred to as the 'end of the world.' You will sail for the rest of the evening through the picturesque Beagle Channel, flanked by impressive mountains that provide a spectacular backdrop for the beginning of your adventure.
Day 2: Drake Passage
During the next two days in Drake Passage, you will gain a fascinating insight into life from the perspective of polar explorers who were the first to explore these challenging regions. The cool salty breezes blowing over the deck and the rushing seas surrounding the ship convey a sense of adventure and discovery. You might even be lucky enough to spot a majestic fin whale elegantly surfacing between the waves. Once you have crossed the Antarctic Convergence, considered the natural boundary of Antarctica, you find yourself in the circumpolar Antarctic upwelling zone. This unique zone is formed when the cold water flowing north meets the warmer subantarctic water masses. This encounter leads to a remarkable change not only in marine life but also in the birdlife. The diversity of bird species you can observe here is impressive: wandering albatrosses, grey-headed albatrosses, black-browed albatrosses, sooty albatrosses, cape petrels, southern fulmars, Wilson's storm petrels, blue petrels, and Antarctic petrels are just some of the majestic birds native to this region, and with a bit of luck, you can experience them in their natural habitat.
Day 3: Antarctic Peninsula
Gray stone peaks, majestic and covered with a thick layer of snow, tower into the sky, while towers of fractured blue-white ice provide a fascinating backdrop. This landscape is not only a feast for the eyes but also home to a very diverse fauna and flora that is worth discovering. Our journey initially takes us to the snow-covered Melchior Islands, a sight that impressively showcases the rugged beauty of Antarctica. We continue through the Schollaert Channel, which stretches picturesquely between Brabant and Anvers Islands. Here, you have the opportunity to visit some of the region's most remarkable places: Danco Island, known for its penguin colonies, Neko Harbour with its impressive glaciers, picturesque Paradise Bay, historic Port Lockroy, and Pléneau & Petermann Islands, famous for their spectacular ice formations. Wilhelmina Bay & Guvernøren offer another opportunity to observe the impressive wildlife, while Charlotte Bay entices with its pristine nature. The exact departure time will be determined by the conditions in the notorious Drake Passage, known for its unpredictable weather, thus requiring a certain degree of flexibility.
Day 4: Return Journey
Our return journey is anything but lonely. As we cross the Drake Passage, we are once again greeted by a variety of seabirds, reminding us of the passage southward. These majestic creatures, gliding across the sky, now seem somewhat more familiar, as if they wish to accompany us on this final leg of our journey. Every adventure - no matter how grand - must eventually come to an end. Returning to Ushuaia marks the end of this remarkable journey, but the memories we've collected will remain with us for a long time. They are like a treasure we keep in our hearts, ready to inspire and encourage us, wherever our next adventure may lead. Now it is time to disembark in Ushuaia - but with memories that will accompany you wherever your next adventure is.
Accommodation: During your discovery tour of Antarctica, you will stay aboard a comfortable ship offering a variety of cabin options – from cozy four-bed cabins with a porthole to luxurious suites with a private balcony. All accommodations are designed to provide you with the utmost comfort during your journey. Enjoy the amenities on board while exploring the impressive landscape and wildlife of Antarctica. Prices vary depending on cabin type and travel period, so there is something for every taste.
Additional Information: The journey includes a ship cruise with overnight stays on board, all meals, as well as land excursions and activities listed in the program. Free equipment such as rubber boots and snowshoes is available. A luggage transfer to the ship on the day of departure and a group transfer to Ushuaia Airport after disembarkation are also included. Excluded are flights, land arrangements before and after the trip, passport and visa costs, meals on land, and personal insurance, which is highly recommended. Tips for the crew are not included and can be requested on demand.
