This magnificent journey takes you to the Arctic Circle in Finnish Lapland. During the multi-day safari through the plateaus of the Arctic tundra, you will enjoy absolute silence, interrupted only by the sound of paws on the snow. Located in the extreme north-west of Finland, life is even more traditional than in the southerly areas. Around a fifth of Enontekiö's inhabitants are native Sámi and earn their living from reindeer herding. Your hosts, Anna and Pasi are very committed to the wellbeing of their dogs and are known for the sustainable use of all-natural resources.
Authentic husky tour from hut to hut: The travel itinerary
Day 1: Arrival
Upon arrival at the airport in Enontekiö or Kittilä, you will be transferred (one to two hours) to the ranch where you will spend your first night. Once there, you will have the opportunity to get to know the farm and the other guests. The traditional Kota (circular log cabin with central fireplace) offers the perfect opportunity to fully immerse yourself in farm life, including the feeding and care of 200 adorable huskies. The overnight stay takes place in comfortable double rooms.
Day 2: Safety briefing and first dog sled tour
Today, after breakfast, you will have the opportunity to help the mushers with the care of the huskies. This is your chance to take a look behind the scenes of a dog farm. For example, you can walk and cuddle with the retired dogs or help with puppy training. Of course, it is also possible to use the hours to relax or to take pictures. This is followed by an introduction to the handling of a dog sled, followed by a 30 km tour on the dog sled.
During the first day you will be accompanied by an experienced guide on a dog sled and a guide with a snowmobile. The snowmobile is for your safety; as soon as everything runs smoothly, the snowmobile comes only at pauses and at crossroads. Even if it means extra work for the provider, it is very valuable for your safety. Luggage is also transported on the snowmobile, making the dog sleds lighter and easier to control. Lunch is taken in a wilderness hut. In the evening at the Kota, you will get warm snacks and drinks. Usually, the dogs get their food first so that they then have enough time to relax. If you want, you can also go for a 2 km walk around the farm, watching for the Northern Lights, or visit the gift shop. Later in the evening, you will learn everything about the training of huskies, their breeding, and caring for the animals.
Day 3: Into the wilderness
After a delicious breakfast, you will again have the opportunity to help with the care of the charming huskies. To avoid health problems in the animals, they are only put in front of the sled two hours after feeding. During the next few days, you will be able to cover around 35 to 55 km every day on the skids of your dog sled and build a relationship with your husky team. The more confident you become, the more challenging the trails can be — bridges, reindeer fence crossings, steep climbs and descents that will get your adrenaline pumping! At lunchtime you can enjoy hot soups and sandwiches, while in the evening you can enjoy a meal made from delicious, mostly local produce.
The landscape changes constantly: from the marshes, rivers, and lakes to dense forests. Besides the beautiful natural scenery, even the changing light of the Arctic days will captivate you. The soft morning light merges into mystic colours and then the spectacular sunsets of the late afternoon/early evening, adding a special flair to the landscape. If you are lucky, you will be accompanied by the magical Northern Lights during a dog sledding tour under the starry skies. The first night outside the ranch is usually spent in a well-equipped heated cabin on the Norwegian-Finnish border. In the cottage, there is an indoor sauna, shower, and a toilet. At the lake, near the sleeping place of the dogs, there is a large sauna, which can be booked upon request. There's also a traditional ice-hole for the brave people who want to try a truly authentic sauna experience!
Day 4: Pure adrenaline in the high tundra
After breakfast and the usual morning chores, you will still have the opportunity to buy chocolate bars, beer, etc. in the only shop in the area before your adventure begins. Then, with your own dog sled team, you will head out in the direction of the high tundra. Arctic winds blow across the beautiful plateau above the tree line. A clear, sunny or deep-dark sky: this shows the entire spectrum of the Arctic weather within a very short time.
Depending on the weather conditions, this trail can be challenging, but by this point, you and your dog team will be well-tuned and able to master all the hurdles together with ease. Lunch will be taken outdoors on this day. The night will be spent in a hut without electricity and heated with wood. In the evening you can talk by candlelight about the events of the day. The sauna invites you to relax and get your socks dry! There are four separate sleeping areas in the cabin and you will appreciate your cosy sleeping bag (provided by the provider for the duration of the trip) as you sink into a deep sleep.
Day 5: Into the mountains
Today is all about the slopes and descents. After breakfast and morning chores, you will go to the last hut, which is located in a small Sámi village. This region is a large, well-known reindeer breeding area. Your guide will tell you more about the fascinating lifestyle of the inhabitants and the reindeer. A film has already been made about the village of Näkkälä. The night you will spend again in a hut without electricity. There are two different cabins, in the colder months, the smaller hut is usually occupied, as it can be heated faster. Both cabins have access to the outdoor sauna.
Day 6: Back to Civilisation
Today we will go to the 3-star hotel in Hetta after breakfast and our morning routine. The route will take you past ice-covered trees and a spectacular landscape, one that will allow you to have a panoramic view of the Fjällkette Mountains. On gentle hills, you will glide on the skids of your dog sled down to the village Hetta. With a bit of luck, you will see the sun go down over Lake Ounasjärvi. When you arrive at the ranch, you will look after your faithful huskies and, with a heavy heart, say goodbye to them. In the evening you will have the opportunity to exchange your favourite highlights with the other participants about the unforgettable past days. Afterward you can relax in the sauna.
Day 7: Farewell
Sadly, all good things must come to an end! After breakfast, you will transfer to Enontekiö airport for your journey home. With you, you will take many new experiences and skills under your belt, as well as some incredible memories and stories that you can remember forever.
Size of the group: 2-8 people.
Please note that the wild huts are shared accommodation with no running water or electricity.
Additional Information:
The safety of our guests and animals is our top priority on all of our tours. The far north can have fluctuating and unpredictable weather with very strong temperature differences. Whilst we strive to follow the planned trails as closely as possible, we reserve the right to change the order of activities, the route of safaris, and the intensity of the excursions should the needs of our guests or animals necessitate it, or if the weather conditions compromise our pre-planned route. This involves both adjustments due to insufficient snow (meaning we cannot drive the sleds) or too much snow (snowstorms and extreme cold can cause accidents and various other problems). The required adjustments and fallback options in rare cases are based on the day-to-day conditions and can be compensated by shorter or longer daily stages, alternative accommodations, or even single day trips. In extremely rare cases we may organise alternative transport (ie. cars, quad bikes, etc). Feel free to contact us if you would like a more detailed assessment of this tour and travel period.
