A once-in-a-lifetime husky holiday in Sweden.
This husky vacation takes you into the breathtaking nature of Sweden with its frozen lakes, untouched forests and rolling hills. You will stay in a cozy log cabin or a guest room, explore the snowy landscape on snowshoes, lead your own husky team and enjoy the warm hospitality and delicious local cuisine. There are only a maximum of four guests on the husky farm, so the hosts can concentrate fully on you. This program, based on decades of experience with Siberian huskies and a sustainable lifestyle in nature, shows you the most beautiful sides of the far north.
Husky holidays in Sweden's wilderness: The itinerary
Day 1: Arrival and cozy get-together
Your adventure begins with your arrival in Östersund or Strömsund, where you will be warmly welcomed and taken to your accommodation. There you can settle in and relax after your journey. A traditional Swedish meal awaits you in the evening. You will also receive an introduction to the upcoming program and can look forward to the coming days together.
Meals start with dinner on the first day and end with breakfast on the last day. Breakfast is delivered to your door in the form of a breakfast basket with food from the region.
All pictures of this partner Day 2: The world of the huskies
Today you will meet the huskies directly! You will learn how to prepare the dogs for a tour and get an introduction to the basics of sledding. You will then set off on your first ride through the picturesque forests and across the vast, frozen swamps. After returning to the farm, you will help look after the huskies and enjoy a hearty lunch around the campfire. In the afternoon, ice fishing is on the program, where you can try your luck in the silence of nature. The day ends with a cozy dinner, either in a traditional lavvu tent or in the house.
Day 3: Snowshoe hike with huskies
After breakfast, you will explore the hidden beauties of the surrounding area on snowshoes together with the huskies. You look for tracks of wild animals and stop along the way to enjoy a warm drink and a light lunch by a small campfire. In the afternoon, you prepare for the upcoming two-day wilderness tour. There will also be a tasting of cheese and regional delicacies such as bear salami and reindeer sausage. This culinary journey of discovery is the perfect prelude to dinner.
Day 4 & 5: Husky adventure in the wilderness
These two days are dedicated to the highlight of your trip: an overnight tour into the wilderness. With your own husky team, you set off for a remote hut or a heated tipi tent, where you spend the night in harmony with nature. You fetch water from the lake, chop wood for the fire and look after your dogs. You can also go ice fishing and explore the surrounding area on snowshoes. After a dinner prepared together by candlelight in the wilderness hut, you spend the night surrounded by the silence of nature. The next day, you will first look after the dogs before preparing your own breakfast, fortifying yourself for the day and then packing up to head back to the husky farm. Enjoy your time on the runners, surrounded by snow-white wilderness with only the wind in your face and the sound of your huskies' paws on the snow. Back at the starting point, you first look after the dogs and stow away the equipment before you can look forward to a relaxing afternoon and a delicious dinner.
Day 6: Day at leisure
This day offers a variety of activities to choose from (please let us know your preferred activity in your booking request): You can take part in an herbal workshop where you can make your own ointments and massage oils, take a walk on the frozen lake or in the forest, go snowshoeing, go ice fishing once again or watch and photograph wild birds. If conditions are suitable, there is also the option of visiting the impressive Hällingsåfallet waterfall, 1.5 hours away, where you have to walk 2.5 km there and back through deep, uncleared snow on snowshoes (this excursion depends on the weather and snow conditions). The day ends with a farewell dinner where you can enjoy Swedish specialties once again. Afterwards, it's worth taking a look at the sky. Perhaps the Northern Lights will be waiting there to wish you a safe journey home.
Day 7: Farewell to the husky farm
Enjoy your breakfast before you say goodbye to the huskies, depending on your departure time, and perhaps take a short walk on the frozen path around the farm or on the icy lake. You will then be taken back to Strömsund or Östersund and can start your journey home with many new impressions and memories.
Accommodation:
Accommodation at the husky farm is in a rustic log cabin or a guest room in the main house. Both are comfortably furnished with bunk beds, a small fridge, kettle and coffee maker. The guest room also has a sofa bed for one person. The modern guest bathroom is shared.
During the two-day husky tour in the wilderness, you will spend the night in a simple log cabin or a heated tipi without running water or electricity. All work, such as chopping wood, is done together in the group.
Requirements:
You don't have to be a top athlete or outdoor expert for this tour, but a certain level of fitness is required. You should be able to stand on the sled for several hours, jump off and push along uphill and then look after the dogs and complete the tasks together with your group. You must also be able to be outside in the (sometimes extreme) cold for a longer period of time.
Additional Information:
The order of tours and activities within this itinerary may vary due to weather conditions and other contributing factors that must be taken into account by the guides when planning your tour. You will receive the exact order of activities once you arrive on site. The far north can have fluctuating and unpredictable weather with very strong temperature differences. The safety of guests and animals comes first, and for this reason, we reserve the right to change the itinerary and intensity of activities if and when needed. This involves both adjustments due to insufficient snow (meaning we cannot drive the sleds) or too much snow (snowstorms and extreme cold can cause accidents and various other problems). The required adjustments and fallback options in rare cases are based on the day-to-day conditions and can be compensated by shorter or longer daily stages, alternative accommodations, or even single day trips. In extremely rare cases we may organise alternative transport (ie. cars, quad bikes, etc). Feel free to contact us if you would like a more detailed assessment of this tour and travel period.
