Best Of Northern Lights

This one week winter trip to Lapland is designed around quiet days and atmospheric evenings under dark skies. You stay at a resort near Muonio and have a clearly structured programme, accompanied by a professional wilderness guides. The focus is on guided Northern Lights excursions from different perspectives, complemented by classic winter experiences such as husky sledding. In between, there is time to arrive, warm up, and relax. With a bit of luck, and if conditions are right, you may be able to see the Northern Lights.

Best Of Northern Lights: The Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival and Dinner
After arrival at Kittilä Airport or Kolari train station, you will be taken to your resort in Lapland. On site, you will move into your comfortable room, pick up your warm winter clothing and settle in at your own pace, rounding off in the evening with dinner in the restaurant. Please note that, depending on your arrival time, you may not be able to collect your winter clothing until the following morning. Meals start with dinner today.

Days 2 - 7: A Winter Week With Northern Lights Activities and Lapland Experiences
Over the following days, you will take part in a variety of differenct activities. These will be spread evenly throughout your stay - you will receive the exact schedule at check-in at reception.

Northern Lights Workshop:
On an afternoon, this workshop will teach you everything you need to know about the Northern Lights. You will delve deeper into how they are formed and the science behind them, while also exploring the stories and myths surrounding this natural phenomenon. Moreover, you will receive tips on how to spot the dancing lights yourself and capture them in stunning photos. The programme is rounded of with hot drinks and plenty of time to ask questions. Total duration: 1 hour. The workshop takes place indoors.

Aurora Snowmobile Tour:
Set off into the Arctic night and drive through snowy forests and open landscapes in search of the Northern Lights. This guided 15–25 km snowmobile adventure takes you far from any light pollution to the best open-sky locations for spotting the Aurora dancing above. Drive solo (for an extra charge) or in pairs, switching drivers halfway to share the thrill of the ride. Enjoy a warm drink while gazing up at the star-filled sky, and if you’re lucky, the shimmering glow of the Aurora Borealis. Children under 15 years old travel safely in the guide’s snowmobile sled. The driver of the snowmobile must be at least 18 years of age with a valid driving license for category B.

Aurora Snowshoeing:
Step quietly into the Arctic night and explore Lapland’s peaceful winter landscapes on snowshoes. Your guide will lead you through silent forests and open terrain beneath the star-filled sky, a perfect setting for stargazing and, if conditions are right, for witnessing the Northern Lights dancing above. Even on cloudy nights, the walk itself is a magical experience, surrounded by the quiet beauty of snow and the glow of your headlamps. Enjoy the calm rhythm of snowshoeing and the magic of the northern night, where every step brings you closer to nature. No previous experience is needed — this is an easy-level adventure, suitable for anyone with a love for the outdoors.

Aurora Reindeer Experience:
Glide silently through the snowy Arctic landscapes in a reindeer-drawn sleigh, guided by a local herder.
Wrapped in warm blankets, you can sit back and relax as the gentle pace of the reindeer and the soft sound of the sleigh on snow create a feeling of timeless peace. As you travel through open areas with wide skies, you’ll have a chance to gaze at the stars — and, if the conditions are right, witness the magical Northern Lights dancing above. Even on cloudy nights, the calm of the Arctic wilderness and the rhythmic steps of the reindeer make this experience truly enchanting.
Total duration: 1 h + possible transfers from your resort.

Husky tour:
You will visit a husky kennel, where you will be greeted by excited barking as soon as you arrive. Before you set off, however, you will receive an introduction to driving a dog sled. Then the time will finally come, and you will be assigned to a husky team in pairs. One person acts as the driver and the other as the passenger, sitting on the sled. Halfway through the tour, you will swap places so that everyone gets a turn at driving. After the 10 - 12 km journey through forests and frozen swamps, you can get to know your dog team better and reward them with plents of cuddles. Total duration (not just driving time): 2 hours + possible transfer from your resort.

Aurora excursion by car:
Join your expert guide for an evening journey in search of the Northern Lights. Following the latest weather and aurora forecasts, your guide will take you by car to the best possible viewing spots, far from the village lights.
As you wait beneath the dark northern sky, enjoy a warm drink and the peaceful silence of Lapland’s winter night. With a bit of luck, the auroras may appear dancing gently above the snowy landscape.

Campfire and Northern Lights watching:
After dinner, you will be taken deeper into the forest in a sleigh pulled by the guide's snowmobile to a cosy campfire site. There, you will settle together and enjoy a lovely evening with warm drinks and good company. On clear nights, thousands of starts stretch out above your heads and, with a bit of luck, the Northern Lights will trace their paths across the dark sky. Even if they don't appear, it is still a special experience to be out at night amidst the peaceful nature of Finland. Total duration: 2 hours.

Traditional kota dinner:
Instead of dining in the hotel restaurant, on one evening of your stay you will enjoy a dinner in a traditional Lappish kota. This is a classic wooden hut, somewhat resembling a teepee in shape. At the heart of the kota is an open fire, on which part of your meal will be cooked today. Look forward to an evening in an authentic atmosphere, accompanied by stories and music that will bring you closer to the spirit of Lapland. Total duration: 2 hours + possible transfer from your resort. Please note that a smoky aroma may linger on your clothes after this dinner. We recommend taking this into account when choosing your outfit.

Day 8: Farewell and Journey Home
Depending on your deprature time meals end after breakfast or lunch. Afterwards, the transfer to Kittilä Airport or to Kolari railway station takes place. We hope you enjoyed your time in Lapland and look back fondly on your vacation for many years to come!

Accommodation:
The trip takes place in Lapland at one of the following resorts: Harriniva Adventure Resort, Jeris Lakeside Resort or Torassieppi Eco Reindeer Resort. Accommodation in a standard room is included in the price. However, depending on your preference, you can also stay in suites or private log cabins (see Extras). All accommodation has running water, electricity and an en-suite bathroom. A single room supplement applies for solo travellers.

The exact schedule will be confirmed on arrival, changes to times and programmes may be necessary due to weather, safety reasons, or other unforeseen circumstances, and activity durations are approximate. For snowmobiles, drivers must be at least 18 years old and hold a valid category B driving licence, and children under 15 ride in the guide’s sled. Natural phenomena such as the Northern Lights cannot be guaranteed.
