Itinerary: Atlantic Odyssey, excluding the Antarctic Peninsula
Day 1: The End of the World, the Beginning of a Journey
Your journey begins at the very end of the world: in Ushuaia, Argentina, one of the southernmost cities on the planet, located at the extreme southern tip of South America. In the afternoon, you board the ship in this small port town on Tierra del Fuego, nicknamed “The End of the World,” and sail through the picturesque, mountain-framed Beagle Channel for the remainder of the evening.
Day 2 - 4: Sea Route to South Georgia
On the way to South Georgia, you pass the Antarctic Convergence, the natural boundary of the Antarctic, where cold southern waters meet the warmer sub-Antarctic sea. Here you are in the circumpolar upwelling zone, rich in nutrients and marine life. Not only does the marine fauna change, but the birdlife becomes more diverse. Numerous albatrosses and petrels follow the ship, joined by Cape Pigeons and Southern Giant Petrels, creating a spectacular display above the waves.

Day 5 – 7: Sights on South Georgia
During these days, you visit some of the largest and most impressive King Penguin colonies in the world. At this time of year, there is a good chance to observe the birds laying eggs and their fluffy chicks nearby. Beaches are often crowded with busy penguins moving between the shore and breeding sites—a truly captivating natural scene. Potential landings include Salisbury Plain, St. Andrews Bay, and Gold Harbour, where you can also spot Southern Elephant Seals and numerous playful seal pups. In Grytviken, there is the opportunity to explore the abandoned whaling station, where King Penguins waddle freely and elephant seals lounge as if they own the place. The South Georgia Museum and the grave of Ernest Shackleton may also be visited. A Zodiac excursion in Cooper Bay provides opportunities to see Macaroni Penguins, King Penguins, Pintado Petrels, and Giant Petrels. Moltke Harbour, a scenic spot in Royal Bay, also offers access to an impressive King Penguin colony.
Day 8– 12: Back at Sea
With favorable westerly winds, the ship continues its journey. On both sides of the Antarctic Convergence, you can observe a wide variety of Antarctic and sub-Antarctic seabirds, while dolphins may accompany the ship, adding excitement to the voyage.
Day 13: Gough Island
Today, the expedition approaches remote Gough Island. Weather permitting, a Zodiac excursion in the picturesque Quest Bay is planned. Here you may encounter Northern Rockhopper Penguins and sub-Antarctic fur seals. In previous years, most of the 33-mile circumference of the island has been circumnavigated, offering ample opportunities to enjoy the island’s stunning landscapes and rich wildlife.
Day 14 – 17: Tristan da Cunha and All the Beautiful Birds
The isolated Tristan da Cunha islands are famous for their rich birdlife, including Rockhopper Penguins, several albatross species, petrels, skuas, terns, and more. The main objective on this leg is the small settlement on the west side of the main island, although landings on Seal Bay to the south or Sandy Point on the east are also possible. Visits to Nightingale Island and Inaccessible Island are planned, providing excellent opportunities to see Yellow-nosed Albatrosses and Brown Noddies. Two days are reserved for Tristan da Cunha in case of adverse weather. Since the start of the Atlantic Odyssey cruise in 1998, about 35% of planned landings on Tristan da Cunha have been canceled due to weather. Safety and natural conditions always dictate the itinerary.
Day 18 – 21: Subtropical Seas and Seabirds
As the voyage continues through subtropical waters, frequently seabirds and dolphins follow the ship. With some luck, whales or flying fish may appear in the open Atlantic, offering an unforgettable display of marine life.
Day 22 – 24: St. Helena Highlights
After landing in Jamestown on St. Helena, you have the opportunity to explore the island’s history and natural wonders. Visit Longwood House, where Napoleon Bonaparte spent his final days in exile. For the adventurous, climb the 699 steps of Jacob’s Ladder, or alternatively snorkel in the clear coastal waters to observe tropical and subtropical fish species.
