Itinerary: Antarctic Peninsula: Crossing the Circle
Day 1: Arrive in Buenos Aires, Argentina
Upon arriving in this cosmopolitan city, famous for its architecture and rich European heritage, you will independently transfer to your group hotel. This hotel, part of the mandatory transfer package, will offer you a pre-expedition night. Buenos Aires, with its vibrant mix of cultural influences, will welcome you with its unique charm. From the moment you set foot in this metropolis, you will feel the energy of its streets, where modern meets traditional. The city's architecture, reflecting its history and diversity, will invite you to explore its corners and discover its secrets. Prepare to immerse yourself in an experience that combines the best of Europe and Latin America as you settle into your accommodation and prepare for the adventure that awaits you.
Day 2: Fly to Ushuaia and Embark
After enjoying an early breakfast at the hotel, the group will transfer to the airport to board our private charter flight to Ushuaia, Argentina. Upon arrival, you will be transferred from the airport to a central location in the city center, where you will have free time to explore this picturesque port town on your own before heading to the pier. As the ship sets sail in the afternoon, you will begin your journey to Antarctica, navigating through the historic Beagle Channel. This channel, named after the famous ship on which Charles Darwin undertook his journey, offers great opportunities to photograph landscapes and seabirds. Finally, the channel opens to the Southern Ocean, and the journey continues towards Antarctica.
Day 3 & 4: Crossing the Drake Passage
During your days at sea, your expedition team will entertain you with exciting presentations on photography, wildlife, glaciology, and history. These informative sessions offer you the opportunity to deepen your knowledge and learn more about the fascinating aspects of the region you are traveling to. If you need a break from the lectures, you can enjoy the fresh sea air on deck while looking out for passing wildlife. You might spot some of the impressive marine creatures or birds native to this remote area. Alternatively, you can retreat to the cozy atmosphere of the ship's bar to engage in conversation with your fellow travelers over a refreshing drink. These social moments offer a wonderful opportunity to share experiences and make new friendships as you cross the Drake Passage together.
Day 5 to 7: South Shetland Islands and Antarctic Peninsula
The most common reaction upon reaching the Antarctic Peninsula is a sense of reverence and awe. The experience is beyond words, since few places are as untouched and enduring as Antarctica. You will begin to appreciate why this region has long captivated the attention of explorers and travelers alike. Every visit to Antarctica, we witness something new or unexpected, which means that your expedition will be unlike any other—creating a unique, personal experience. Each day, you will take Zodiac excursions from the ship to explore local bays, channels and landing sites. With wildlife always at the forefront of our minds, you will visit penguin rookeries, scout for humpback and minke whales, and search for a number of southern seal species, including the elusive leopard seal. Your Expedition Team will take care of you at each landing, whether you are exploring the Antarctic terrain, visiting a research station or consorting with penguin colonies. Chinstrap, Adélie and gentoo penguins are found here, along with five different species of seals. Zodiac cruising can offer opportunities to view some of the larger local marine mammals more intimately, such as Antarctic minke and humpback whales. Your days will be busy spotting wildlife and being mesmerized by the astounding beauty of Antarctica. Listening to the crackling and crumbling of icebergs and glaciers and watching penguins waddling on the beach will become your daily entertainment, while heli flightseeing, sea kayaking or paddle excursions are optional activities available on select voyages (at an extra cost).
Day 8 & 9: Antarctic Circle
Crossing the southern polar circle is both a remarkable experience and an impressive achievement, as few travelers venture this far south. If conditions permit crossing this famous latitude of 66°33' S, we will toast to the first explorers who dared to venture here. You can raise a glass and be proud that you have reached a part of the world visited by very few people. This is the pristine Antarctica, home to the midnight sun, Weddell seals, and your best chances of encountering sea ice—the very foundations of the Antarctic marine ecosystem.
Day 10 & 11: Northbound Along the Peninsula
By now, your knowledge of Adélie, chinstrap, and gentoo penguins will be as pronounced as your ability to distinguish between a leopard, crabeater, and Weddell seal. Terms like "bergy bits" and "pancake ice" will have become part of your vocabulary, yet there are still many stories to tell. As you head north, Zodiac excursions will fill your days, and your expedition team will continue to look out for seabirds, seals, and whales that you may have missed on your journey south.
Day 12 & 13: Crossing the Drake Passage
As you cross the Drake Passage once again, Antarctica gradually fades on the horizon, leaving behind a collection of memories that will last a lifetime. The excited conversations with your newfound friends will make the crossing fly by, regardless of weather and sea conditions. Your expedition team will also conclude their series of presentations with a slideshow of the adventures you have shared and the wildlife you have observed throughout your journey. Be sure to take some time to reflect on everything you have experienced so far.
Day 14: Disembark in Ushuaia and Fly to Buenos Aires
In the morning, you will reach Ushuaia, the southernmost city in the world, often referred to as the gateway to Antarctica. After a final breakfast aboard the ship, which has served as your comfortable home during your journey, you will disembark. The fresh air and the impressive backdrop of the surrounding mountains and the Beagle Channel offer a last impression of the rugged beauty of Patagonia. You will then proceed to your group charter flight included in the travel package, which will take you back to Buenos Aires. This journey offers you the opportunity to reflect on the experiences of the past days as you prepare for the return flight to the vibrant capital of Argentina.
