Itinerary: Antarctic Marine Mammals: The World of Whales and Seals
Day 1: Arrive in Buenos Aires, Argentina
Upon arrival in Buenos Aires, a city known for its vibrant culture, European architecture and cosmopolitan atmosphere, you will make your own way to your pre-expedition hotel, with the overnight stay included in the charter flight and hotel package. The remainder of the day is at leisure to explore the city. Buenos Aires offers inviting cafés, the sounds of tango and a rich culinary scene, providing a pleasant and inspiring start to your journey.

Day 2: Flight to Ushuaia and embarkation
After breakfast, a charter flight takes the group to Ushuaia, the southernmost city in Argentina. Following some free time in the town centre, you will be transferred to the ship and embark. The vessel then sails through the Beagle Channel, which runs between the main island of Tierra del Fuego and its surrounding islands, heading out towards the Southern Ocean. From here, your voyage to Antarctica begins.
Day 3: At Sea: Drake Passage Southbound
The crossing of the Drake Passage leads through the Antarctic Convergence, where cold Antarctic waters meet warmer sub-Antarctic currents. This nutrient-rich area supports abundant seabirds and marine mammals, allowing for initial wildlife sightings. On board, the accompanying scientists introduce their work, including the team from the Friedlaender Lab, which researches the ecology and behaviour of marine mammals. The “Happywhale” platform is also presented, through which sighting photographs can be uploaded and shared to help identify individual animals.
Day 4: At Sea: Sailing Toward Antarctica
The second day at sea offers time for lectures and presentations about Antarctic wildlife and the natural environment. A dedicated science area on board provides insight into ongoing research and citizen science projects. As you approach the Peninsula, the chances of whale sightings increase.
Day 5 to 7: Antarctic Peninsula
These days are devoted to exploring the Antarctic Peninsula. As the sea ice retreats during the Antarctic summer, nutrient-rich waters develop, attracting krill and, in turn, marine mammals. Depending on weather and ice conditions, activities include Zodiac cruises, shore landings and optional paddling excursions. Time is also set aside on the outer decks for wildlife observation.
Cruising areas include the Gerlache Strait as well as sheltered bays and channels such as Charlotte Bay, Portal Point, Graham Passage, Errera Channel, Cuverville Island, Andvord Bay, Fournier Bay and Dallmann Bay. In the past, minke whales, humpback whales, fin whales, orcas and occasionally Arnoux’s beaked whales have been sighted in these regions, although sightings cannot be guaranteed.
During selected excursions, hydrophones – underwater microphones – are deployed. Accompanying scientists record acoustic signals beneath the surface and explain their behavioural research on marine mammals. Participation is possible both from Zodiacs and during optional paddling activities. Lectures and citizen science programmes also take place. Additional opportunities include observing penguins, seals, glaciers and icebergs, as well as shore landings. Those who wish may take part in the traditional polar plunge.
Day 8: South Shetlands
To conclude the exploration, the voyage heads to the South Shetland Islands. With some luck, southern elephant seals, other seal species and seabirds such as southern giant petrels may be observed. Possible landings, for example at Hannah Point, depend on permits as well as weather and ice conditions. Occasional whale sightings are also possible here.
Day 9: At Sea: Drake Passage Northbound
The return crossing of the Drake Passage provides time to spend with the expedition team and attend further lectures or discussions about research findings and wildlife observations.
Day 10: Final day at sea
On the final sea day, you may once again visit the on-board science area and participate in citizen science programmes. Presentations summarise the themes of the expedition and deepen your understanding of Antarctic ecosystems.
Day 11: Disembark in Ushuaia and Fly to Buenos Aires
After breakfast, you disembark in Ushuaia. A transfer takes the group to the airport for the charter flight back to Buenos Aires, where the journey concludes.
Accommodation: Throughout the expedition, you will stay on board the World Voyager. The ship offers comfortable cabins as well as shared spaces for relaxation and socialising.
Further Information: The expedition lasts 11 days and starts in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Departures for this voyage are scheduled for March 2027.
Discover the fascinating world of Antarctic marine mammals on a distinctive journey that combines science and adventure. Places are limited and demand is high, so we recommend enquiring now to secure your personal Antarctic experience.
Additional Information for Expedition Cruises: The itinerary and route described are provided as examples only and may be adjusted or changed at any time due to weather, ice and tidal conditions, as well as for safety reasons. Specific landing sites, locations or route sections therefore cannot be guaranteed. The captain and expedition leader will make all final decisions regarding the route, landings and daily programme on site. Wildlife sightings cannot be guaranteed. Landings and Zodiac excursions depend on local conditions and regulatory requirements. Optional activities have very limited availability; we recommend booking them well in advance, often weeks or months before departure, as they may be fully booked by the time of travel; their operation depends on weather, ice and safety conditions as well as minimum participation. Polar regions are remote and dynamic natural environments, therefore programme changes or delays may occur.
