The Antarctic Express expedition explores the Antarctic Peninsula and the South Shetland Islands, combining air and sea travel to provide an efficient way to experience the wildlife and striking landscapes. The journey begins in Punta Arenas, Chile, a city on the southern shore of the Strait of Magellan, rich in history and cultural attractions. From there, you fly directly to King George Island, bypassing the lengthy Drake Passage at sea. On board the comfortable Ocean Explorer or World Voyager, you will have ample opportunity to observe penguins, seals, and whales in their natural habitats and to take in the impressive glaciers, snow-covered mountains, and coastal scenery up close. Informative lectures from our polar experts provide in-depth insights into the region’s geology, history, and wildlife.

Itinerary: Antarctic Express: Fly South, Sail North

Day 1: Punta Arenas, Chile
Your journey begins in Punta Arenas on the southern shore of the Strait of Magellan. Explore historic sites and museums and immerse yourself in the local culture. A shared dinner provides an opportunity to meet your fellow travellers and prepare for the expedition ahead.

Day 2: Embarkation Day
You fly directly from Punta Arenas to King George Island. Upon arrival, you board your expedition ship and embark on your first Zodiac excursion to explore the surroundings and gain your first impression of Antarctica.

Day 3 to 6: Antarctic Peninsula and South Shetland Islands
Over the next few days, you explore the Peninsula and South Shetland Islands. Observe various species of penguins, seals, and whales, and enjoy the dramatic landscapes of glaciers and snow-covered mountains. On Pléneau Island and Petermann Island, you may witness calving glaciers and see fur and southern elephant seals. Each Zodiac excursion and landing provides new perspectives on the wildlife and landscapes.

Day 7 & 8: Crossing the Drake Passage to Ushuaia
During the journey back to Ushuaia, you continue wildlife observations. Experts are on deck to introduce birds such as black-browed albatrosses and whales, including humpback and minke whales. Lectures on marine biology, glaciology, and polar history complement the expedition experience.

Day 9: Disembark and overnight in Ushuaia, Argentina
After breakfast, you bid farewell to the crew. You have time to explore Ushuaia, browse local shops, or enjoy the landscapes surrounding the Beagle Channel before the expedition concludes.

Day 10: Depart for home
The expedition ends today, or you may choose to extend your stay in Ushuaia. The city offers a combination of remarkable natural scenery and rich history.

Further Information: The expedition normally lasts 9 days and 8 nights. In some cases, an extended option of 10 days and 9 nights is available, depending on the chosen embarkation or flight schedule, allowing extra flexibility for arrival or departure. If you have any questions regarding the options, we will be happy to assist you.

A combination of surfboard and kayak, stand-up paddleboarding offers you a very personal and unique perspective on Antarctica. This activity is carried out in small groups in quiet bays and harbors. In good weather conditions and accompanied by a safety Zodiac, you can experience a unique stand-up paddleboard excursion in polar waters.
