Ortelius was originally the Marina Svetaeva. Built in Gdynia, Poland in 1989, it served as a special-purpose vessel for the Russian Academy of Science. Later, it was re-flagged and renamed after the Dutch/Flemish cartographer Abraham Ortelius (1527–1598), who in 1570 published the first modern world atlas: Theatrum Orbis Terrarum or Theater of the World. At that time, his atlas was the most expensive book ever printed. Ortelius is classified by Lloyd’s Register in London and flies the Dutch flag.

All the threads come together in the bridge on deck 7. During a visit, you will gain fascinating insights into modern navigation and the daily work of the crew. Observe how course and speed are set, how weather data is evaluated and how the ship is steered safely through the polar waters. The crew members will be happy to provide you with information and answer your questions - right at the scene of the action. The view from the bridge is impressive and gives you a special feeling for life at sea. Please note that access to the bridge may be restricted for safety reasons during certain maneuvers or in difficult weather conditions. Simply ask on site for the current visiting times.
