The MS Maud, formerly known as MS Midnatsol, is named after one of the most famous polar ships of all time: Roald Amundsen's "Maud" from 1917. The original "Maud" was named after the first queen of modern Norway. Another ship that bore this proud name was Hurtigruten's flagship from 1925, the DS Dronning Maud ("DS Queen Maud"). Today’s MS Maud is equipped with the most advanced technology, making it exceptionally well-suited for expedition voyages in Norway and to the British Isles.
The latest addition to the fleet pays tribute to the extraordinary life of its namesake – the Norwegian explorer, scientist, humanitarian, and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Fridtjof Nansen. Nansen, renowned for his pioneering innovations in Arctic expeditions, was the first to cross Greenland on cross-country skis. He is especially known for his attempt to reach the geographic North Pole during the Fram Expedition (1893–1896). Interestingly, after Nansen's Fram Expedition, the ship was handed over to another prominent explorer, who secretly planned an expedition to the South Pole – Roald Amundsen.
MS Roald Amundsen, named after the first person to traverse Antarctica and reach the South Pole, pioneers a more sustainable approach to travel. Designed specifically for voyages in polar waters, the ship acts as a comfortable base camp at sea, bringing adventurers from around the globe to the planet's most breathtaking destinations in the most eco-friendly manner possible.
The MS Fram is not a conventional cruise ship, but a vessel purpose-built for expedition travel. With a capacity of around 200 guests, the focus is clearly on immersive nature experiences and scientifically guided exploration. At the heart of the ship is a modern Science Center, where the expedition team shares insights into the regions, wildlife and environments visited. At the same time, the ship combines functional design with Scandinavian comfort: restaurants, the Explorer Lounge and spacious outdoor areas create a relaxed atmosphere even in remote locations. This concept is further enhanced by an experienced expedition team, as well as daily landings and activities, placing the emphasis firmly on exploration rather than traditional cruise entertainment.
The MS Spitsbergen is a compact expedition vessel, purpose-built for journeys beyond the usual routes. With capacity for around 150 guests, it offers a notably personal experience and, thanks to its manoeuvrability, can reach remote coastlines and narrow fjords often inaccessible to larger ships. At the core is the expedition experience: a dedicated team of naturalists, historians and guides accompanies each voyage, organises landings and shares in-depth knowledge about the regions, wildlife and environments encountered. This is complemented by a modern Science Center, serving as a central space for lectures, discussions and deeper insight. On board, functional expedition design meets Scandinavian simplicity. Large panoramic windows, open decks and a calm atmosphere ensure that the surrounding landscape remains the focus at all times – even between landings.
