Itinerary: West Greenland Ice Odyssey: Glaciers and Icebergs
Day 1: Arrive in Reykjavik
Arrive in the Icelandic capital and make your way to your included hotel. Once you have settled in, you will have the rest of the day to explore the city on your own. Reykjavik, with its vibrant culture and stunning landscapes, offers a myriad of opportunities for discovery. Whether you choose to wander through the charming streets, visit the iconic Hallgrímskirkja church, or perhaps indulge in some local cuisine at one of the many delightful eateries, the city is yours to explore at your leisure. Take this time to immerse yourself in the unique atmosphere of Reykjavik, where modernity meets tradition, and every corner holds a new adventure waiting to be uncovered.
Day 2: Fly to Kangerlussuaq and Embark
This morning marks the beginning of an exciting chapter in your journey as you catch your charter flight to the remote and captivating destination of Kangerlussuaq. Upon arrival, you will board your vessel, setting the stage for a remarkable expedition. As you prepare for the adventure that lies ahead, you can anticipate a warm welcome and a comprehensive safety briefing from your Expedition Leader, ensuring that you are well-prepared for the journey. Quark Expeditions is committed to working closely with local partners, a core belief that will enrich every aspect of your experience as you explore alongside knowledgeable local experts. By drawing on the collective knowledge and expertise of our team, we aim to deliver truly memorable experiences that will leave a lasting impression.
Day 3 to 5: Disko Bay
Disko Bay is a vast, southeastern bay of Baffin Bay and the largest open bay in western Greenland. Try to be on deck as we navigate into this iconic bay, where whales are often spotted. Disko Bay is full of exciting destinations for us to explore. We will almost certainly visit the community of Illulissat, located at the head of the outlet fjord for Sermeq Kujalleq (Jakobshavn Glacier), known for depositing 35 billion tons of ice annually. The fjord was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004 and is of overwhelming beauty. We will encourage you to explore it via one of the many marked hiking trails. Another area we are considering for this itinerary is the wild beauty of the Equip Sermia or Torsukatak fjords, located in the northeastern corner of Disko Bay. Both of these remote areas offer fantastic views of large active glacier fronts and provide numerous opportunities for hiking, paddling, and Zodiac cruising. This is also an area where, if conditions permit, we will consider using our twin-engine helicopters to take you into the air and appreciate the vastness of this region.
Day 6 to 8: Qeqqata
Qeqqata, whose name means "center," is the second smallest administrative region of Greenland. This region is located in the middle of the country's west coast and is home to almost 20% of Greenland's population, most of whom live in Sisimiut and Maniitsoq. During these two days, your expedition team, in collaboration with our local partners, will put together a balanced mix of community and nature-oriented activities. We will likely visit Sisimiut, where you can stroll through the open-air museum, participate in local tastings, or join a hiking group to explore the city limits on one of the many impressive hiking trails at the gates of Sisimiut. Here we also offer the (paid) mountain biking activity. Further south, our team will strive to take you beyond the ordinary into these fjords to provide magical, unique experiences, including the Eternity Fjord, which hosts the highest mountains in all of West Greenland. Another fascinating community in this region is Itilleq. Surrounded by sea and mountains, Itilleq is located about a mile (2 km) north of the Arctic Circle. The Quark Expeditions team maintains a long-standing relationship with the people of Itilleq, who often come together and invite our staff and guests to a spontaneous soccer or football game.
Day 9: Kangerlussuaq Disembarkation
Today our journey ends in Kangerlussuaq, a place formerly known as Søndre Strømfjord. Here we bid farewell to our ship and accompany you to your charter flight to Reykjavik. This city, known for its vibrant culture and stunning landscapes, will be your home for the coming night. Your stay in Reykjavik is already included, so you don't have to worry about anything else. Enjoy the amenities of your hotel and reflect on the impressions of the past days as you prepare to explore the Icelandic capital.
Day 10: Depart Reykjavik
Today you can leisurely begin your journey home or continue your independent explorations of Iceland. Take the opportunity to gather the last impressions of this fascinating island, whether through a relaxed stroll through Reykjavik or a final excursion into the impressive nature. Perhaps you would like to enjoy the vibrant atmosphere of the city once more, purchase a souvenir as a reminder of your journey, or simply experience Icelandic hospitality in one of the cozy cafes. If you decide on further explorations, numerous opportunities are available to experience Iceland's unique landscape and culture even more intensely. Whether you choose to return home or embark on further adventures, this day offers you the freedom to round off your journey according to your wishes.
