This morning, the group will be taken to the airport to board our private charter flight to Longyearbyen, the largest settlement on Spitsbergen, as part of the transfer package. As you embark in the afternoon, you can look forward to impressive views of the mountainous landscape that serves as the backdrop for this coastal town. The journey promises to be a visual feast, as the majestic mountains and pristine nature of the region offer an impressive scenery. The arrival in Longyearbyen marks the beginning of a remarkable adventure that highlights the beauty and uniqueness of the Arctic environment.
Day 3 to 6: Exploring Spitsbergen
Exploring Spitsbergen, the largest island in the Norwegian Svalbard archipelago, rewards you with austere beauty and opportunities to spot its abundant wildlife. As you embark on this adventure, you'll find yourself surrounded by the raw and untouched landscapes that define this remote region. Here, you’ll visit spectacular glacier fronts, where the ice formations create a mesmerizing backdrop, and tundra in full bloom, offering a unique contrast with its vibrant colors. The wildlife encounters are nothing short of extraordinary, with walrus, polar bears, and Svalbard reindeer amongst your possible wildlife sightings, each adding to the allure of this Arctic wonderland. Birders will be thrilled to see Arctic terns, skuas, Brünnich’s guillemots, black-legged kittiwakes, and ivory gulls, as these avian species grace the skies with their presence. If conditions permit, you could sail within 10 degrees of the North Pole, a feat that adds an element of excitement and wonder to your journey, bringing you closer to the top of the world.
Day 7 & 8: Cruising
As you sail south through the historic Greenland Sea towards Jan Mayen, your expedition team will keep you informed with exciting presentations on the history and politics of the Arctic. You will learn more about the fascinating wildlife, geology, ecology, and climate of this unique region and prepare for the impressive sights you will soon explore. On deck, you have the opportunity to identify seabirds in flight and expand your knowledge of Arctic birdlife. The team will also be on the lookout for whales, which are frequently encountered in these waters, and will provide you with the best tips to spot these majestic creatures.
Day 9: Exploring Jan Mayen
North of the Arctic Circle, about 280 miles (450 km) east of Greenland and 340 miles (550 km) north of Iceland, the mysterious Jan Mayen rises from the depths of the North Atlantic. Often shrouded in dense fog, the small, mountainous island was declared a nature reserve in 2010 and is rarely visited, apart from the 18 rotating staff of the Norwegian military and the Norwegian Meteorological Institute, who are the only inhabitants. The landing here is determined by the weather and the sea. If conditions permit, keep an eye out from the deck as the highest peak of the spoon-shaped island emerges. At 7,470 feet (2,277 meters) high, the impressive Beerenberg volcano impresses with its symmetrical cone shape and the impressive glaciers flowing into the sea. If we're lucky, we can catch a close-up view of the volcano and the layered cliffs of the spectacular north coast as we cruise along the island's coast with the Zodiac, searching for wildlife. Jan Mayen, designated as an important bird area by BirdLife International, supports colonies of northern fulmars, little auks, glaucous gulls, black-legged kittiwakes, and thick-billed murres.
Day 10 & 11: Cruising
As we sail south, the Denmark Strait serves as your gateway to Iceland. Enjoy a presentation, share your photos, sip an icy cocktail in the bar, or watch a movie – there are many ways to spend your time at sea. Your expedition team is also available to answer questions and point out wildlife. Take the opportunity to connect with fellow travelers and share your experiences while enjoying the relaxed atmosphere on board. The vastness of the sea and the fresh breeze provide a perfect backdrop to unwind and build anticipation for the upcoming adventures in Iceland.
Day 12: Disembark Reykjavik, Iceland
At the end of your expedition, you will disembark in Reykjavik, the capital of Iceland. This vibrant city, known for its impressive blend of modern culture and breathtaking nature, will be the final stop of your journey. After disembarkation, a comfortable transfer to your included hotel awaits you, where you will spend the night. Take the opportunity to enjoy the unique atmosphere of Reykjavik, whether through a stroll through the charming streets or a visit to one of the many cozy cafes.
