Itinerary: Three Arctic Islands: Iceland, Greenland, Spitsbergen
Day 1: Arrive in Helsinki, Finland
Your Arctic adventure journey begins in Helsinki, a city known for its exceptional architecture and fascinating blend of Eastern and Western influences. If you arrive early, you have the opportunity to explore the numerous museums, galleries, and restaurants the city has to offer. Relax in a traditional Finnish sauna, famous for its soothing effects, or stroll through the vibrant Design District, which delights with its creative shops and innovative designs. At the end of the day, you can retreat to your hotel included in the travel package and reflect on the day's impressions.
Day 2: Fly to Longyearbyen, Svalbard & Embark
After breakfast, the group will be taken to the airport to board our private charter flight to Longyearbyen, the largest settlement on Spitsbergen, as part of the transfer package. As you embark in the afternoon, you will enjoy the magnificent views of the mountainous landscape that serves as the backdrop for this coastal town. The scenery unfolding before you is an impressive interplay of nature and human settlement, highlighting the uniqueness of this remote region. The majestic mountains rising in the distance offer a breathtaking sight that enhances the anticipation of the upcoming adventures in this fascinating environment.
Day 3 to 6: Exploring Spitsbergen, Svalbard
Exploring Spitsbergen, the largest island of the Norwegian Svalbard archipelago, rewards you with simple beauty and the opportunity to observe rich wildlife. On this journey, you will be surrounded by the raw and untouched landscapes that characterize this remote region. Here you will visit spectacular glacier fronts and blooming tundra, offering a unique contrast of icy blues and vibrant greens. The wildlife encounters are exceptional, with walruses, polar bears, and Svalbard reindeer among the possible sightings, enhancing the allure of this Arctic paradise. Bird lovers will be thrilled to see Arctic terns, skuas, thick-billed murres, kittiwakes, and ivory gulls adorning the sky and cliffs with their presence. If conditions allow, you could sail up to 10 degrees from the North Pole, an exciting prospect that adds an adventurous accent to your exploration of this fascinating island.
Day 7 & 8: Cruising
As you sail south through the Greenland Sea, your expedition team will teach you all about the wildlife and history of Greenland, your next destination. On deck, you have the opportunity to identify seabirds in flight and expand your knowledge of the fascinating birdlife. Attend a presentation to learn more about the region or share your photos with fellow travelers to share your experiences. Enjoy an ice-cold cocktail at the bar while gazing at the vastness of the sea or relax with a movie. There are many ways to make your time at sea varied and entertaining.
Day 9 to 12: Exploring East Greenland
During your tour along the remote east coast of Greenland, you will have the opportunity to participate in exciting Zodiac cruises and visit various coastal locations. These explorations offer you the chance to discover the remnants of ancient Thule settlements while always keeping an eye out for grazing musk oxen – an impressive 40 percent of the world's musk ox population is native here. Another highlight of your journey is the passage through the spectacular Scoresbysund, considered the birthplace of many icebergs and regarded by some as one of the most beautiful fjord systems in the world. If conditions allow, a visit to Ittoqqortoormiit, the most remote community in East Greenland, could also be on the agenda.
Day 13 & 14: Cruising
As we sail south, the Denmark Strait serves as your gateway to Iceland. On this journey, your expedition team will not only keep you informed but also entertain you with exciting presentations about the history of exploration in the Arctic. These lectures offer you fascinating insights into the brave explorers who once traversed these icy waters and the challenges they faced. Additionally, you will learn more about the impressive seabirds that elegantly hover above your ship, filling the vastness of the sky with life. These majestic creatures, native to the rugged beauty of the Arctic, offer an impressive spectacle that will make your journey special.
Day 15: Depart Reykjavik, Iceland
At the end of your journey, you will disembark in Reykjavik, the capital of Iceland. This vibrant city, known for its unique blend of modern culture and impressive nature, will be the last stop of your remarkable expedition.
