Day 2: Fly to Longyearbyen, Svalbard & Embarkation
After breakfast, the group is transferred to the airport for the flight to Longyearbyen, the largest settlement in the Svalbard archipelago. On boarding, you can take in the surrounding mountains and the town. The area offers a mix of human settlement and untouched nature, providing a first impression of the expedition ahead.
Day 3 to 6: Exploring Spitsbergen, Svalbard
The expedition travels around Svalbard, the largest island of the archipelago. The landscapes are largely untouched and offer numerous wildlife observation opportunities. You will visit glacier fronts, tundra areas and enjoy the varied colours of the Arctic scenery. Wildlife sightings may include walruses, polar bears and Svalbard reindeer. Birdwatchers can expect to see Arctic terns, skuas, thick-billed guillemots, black-legged kittiwakes and ivory gulls. Depending on ice and weather conditions, the ship can reach as far as approximately 80° N, adding a distinctive geographic aspect to your visit. Optional kayaking trips can be booked to explore coastal areas and wildlife at close range.
Day 7 & 8: Passage towards East Greenland
During the passage to East Greenland, the expedition team provides information on local wildlife and the region’s history. From the deck, you can observe seabirds or attend presentations to learn more about the local nature and culture. The days at sea offer the opportunity to relax and enjoy the open ocean.
Day 9 to 12: Exploring East Greenland
The expedition travels along the remote east coast of Greenland. Zodiac excursions and visits to coastal settlements are included. There are opportunities to discover archaeological sites of the Thule culture and to observe musk oxen inhabiting the region. Another highlight is navigating the Scoresby Sund fjord system, where numerous icebergs drift from the glaciers. Depending on conditions, a visit to Ittoqqortoormiit, one of East Greenland’s most remote settlements, may also be included.
Day 13 & 14: Passage to Iceland
On the way to Iceland, the ship passes through the Denmark Strait. The expedition team provides insights into the history of Arctic exploration and the challenges faced by early explorers. There are also opportunities to observe seabirds and learn about their behaviour.
Day 15: Depart Reykjavik, Iceland
The journey concludes in Reykjavik, Iceland’s capital, which combines modern culture with natural landscapes. If post-expedition accommodation is booked, a transfer to the city centre is provided, allowing you to explore Reykjavik at your own pace. The city offers opportunities to experience local culture and cuisine before the end of your expedition.
Additional Information: The expedition takes place on board the Ultramarine, which features comfortable cabins, lounge and presentation areas, wellness facilities and observation decks. In addition to the main activities, you can book a Tundra-to-Table experience, which introduces traditional Inuit and Icelandic culinary methods. There is also the opportunity to take part in the Polar Plunge, a guided dip in the polar sea with support from the expedition team. These options make time on board varied and informative.
Places are limited and demand is high. We recommend enquiring early to secure your personal Arctic experience. Our team is available to answer questions and assist with planning your trip.
Additional Information for Expedition Cruises: The itinerary and route described are provided as examples only and may be adjusted or changed at any time due to weather, ice and tidal conditions, as well as for safety reasons. Specific landing sites, locations or route sections therefore cannot be guaranteed. The captain and expedition leader will make all final decisions regarding the route, landings and daily programme on site. Wildlife sightings cannot be guaranteed. Landings and Zodiac excursions depend on local conditions and regulatory requirements. Optional activities have very limited availability; we recommend booking them well in advance, often weeks or months before departure, as they may be fully booked by the time of travel; their operation depends on weather, ice and safety conditions as well as minimum participation. Polar regions are remote and dynamic natural environments, therefore programme changes or delays may occur.
