'‘’‘Expedition to Greenland's Northern Lights: The itinerary’‘’'
'‘'Day 1: Kangerlussuaq, embarkation’
On the first day of our expedition, we arrive in Kangerlussuaq on the west coast of Greenland, the main hub for travel to this vast island. Kangerlussuaq lies at the head of a 160 km long fjord and is the only town in the interior of Greenland. Originally founded in 1941 by American troops as Sondrestrom Air Base, the town has retained its “Cold War” charm to this day. On arrival, you will be taken to the small harbor west of the airport, where the Ocean Albatros will be waiting for you. We will take Zodiacs to the ship, where you will be checked into your cabin. After the safety briefing, you will enjoy a delicious dinner and a glass of sparkling wine as we set sail and prepare for an exciting adventure through the Kangerlussuaq Fjord.
'‘'Day 2: Kangaamiut and Evighedsfjorden’
On the first full day of our expedition, we reach the picturesque village of Kangaamiut, located in the central Qeqqata region of Greenland. Surrounded by cold, rich waters and a vast environment teeming with wildlife, life in Kangaamiut moves at a leisurely pace. Here, the locals live largely traditionally and rely on hunting and fishing. Hike to the heliport on the hill for a breathtaking view over the village and the surrounding fjord landscapes or meet the friendly locals during a demonstration of traditional clothing and food. In the afternoon we sail on to Evighedsfjord, one of the many deep fjords that wind between the steep mountains of this region. The fjord is known for its impressive size and the glaciers that flow into it. Look out for glacial erratics and various bird species nesting on the cliffs.

'‘'Day 3: Nuuk, capital of Greenland’
Nuuk, the lively capital of Greenland, presents a mixture of skyscrapers and traditional wooden houses. The city, which has more than 19,000 inhabitants, offers a wealth of experiences. The fjords around Nuuk have always been inhabited by the Paleo-Inuit cultures, and archaeological finds attest to the migration of ancient hunters to the region. The Norse colonists from Iceland founded the Western Settlement in the green meadows of Nuuk Fjord around 100 AD. Explore the National Museum of Greenland and learn more about the country's fascinating history and art. Visit the Katuaq Cultural Center and enjoy the local hospitality in one of the modern cafés while watching the hustle and bustle of Nuuk.
'‘'Day 4: At sea, on the way to South Cold Greenland’
From Nuuk, the Ocean Albatros follows the rugged coast of Greenland in a southerly direction. Most of Greenland's settlements are located on the coast, where the warm currents of the Atlantic enrich the waters. During our day at sea, a variety of activities are organized on board to stimulate body and mind. Attend lectures by the expedition team, relax in the Albatros Polar Spa or enjoy the view of the attentive seabirds that accompany us on our way.
'‘'Day 5: Qassiarsuk and Itilleq Kujalleq’
In the early hours of the morning, we sail through the majestic Tunulliarfik Fjord to the small sheep farming village of Qassiarsuk. This is where the legendary Norse explorer Erik the Red, who gave Greenland its name, lived. Explore the remains of his farm, Brattahlíð, and visit the charming villages in the area. In the afternoon, we continue our course to the sheltered bay of Itilleq, where a hiking trail leads inland. Discover the ruins of the Garðar bishop's palace and experience the impressive nature of this region.
'‘'Day 6: Prins Christian Sund and Aappilattoq’
South of Skjoldungen lies Cape Farvel, known for its challenging weather conditions. However, we choose a spectacular route across Prins Christian Sund, which is known for its breathtaking beauty. In the morning we reach the small village of Aappilattoq, where life moves at a slower pace. Enjoy the excellent hiking opportunities and the breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains.
'‘'Day 7: Skjoldungen, Southeast Greenland’
Today we sail into the impressive Skjoldungen Fjord, which is known for its breathtaking landscapes. The fjord is uninhabited and surrounded by majestic, jagged mountains. At the head of the fjord lies the Thryms Glacier, a spectacular glacial river. Hike with the expedition team through the blossoming Dronning Maries Dal valley and enjoy the breathtaking nature.
'‘'Day 8: Sermilik, East Greenland’
As the sun rises over the crystal clear waters, we observe the whales that live in these cold waters. The Sermilik Fjord, which separates Ammassalik Island and the Greenland mainland, is known for its huge icebergs. Explore the untouched nature and the impressive ice landscapes during a Zodiac cruise.
'‘'Day 9: Ikateq and Kuummiut, East Greenland’
In the morning we visit the village of Kuummiut, where life is characterized by fishing. The peaceful atmosphere and the friendly locals invite you to relax and unwind. In the afternoon, we drive to Ikateq, where the ruins of a former American military base from the Second World War can be visited.
'‘'Day 10: Tasiilaq, East Greenland’
Tasiilaq is the largest settlement in East Greenland and offers a unique insight into the local culture. Visit the museum, enjoy a hike in the flower valley or experience a traditional drum performance. The spectacular nature and warm people make Tasiilaq an unforgettable experience.
'‘'Day 11: At sea, on the way to Reykjavik, Iceland’
On the way to Reykjavik, various activities are organized on board to reflect on the last days of our journey. Enjoy cocktails and lectures from the expedition team while breathing in the fresh sea air and observing the wildlife. On the last evening on board, we celebrate with a farewell cocktail and the presentation of photos and videos of our adventures.
'‘'Day 12: Reykjavik, Iceland’
After a hearty breakfast, it's time to say goodbye to the crew of the Ocean Albatros and go ashore with unforgettable memories of this unique journey. Reykjavik, the lively capital of Iceland, offers many opportunities to round off the trip with explorations and culinary delights.
