Itinerary: Falkland Islands – South Georgia – Antarctic Peninsula

Day 1: Arrival and Embarkation in Ushuaia or Puerto Madryn
Your expedition begins in Ushuaia, the southernmost city in the world, or alternatively in Puerto Madryn. After embarkation, you set sail through the scenic Beagle Channel, leaving the southernmost reaches of South America behind. Surrounded by impressive mountains and clear waters, your adventure begins as you head into the South Atlantic, preparing for the days of remarkable wildlife encounters and breathtaking landscapes ahead.

Day 2-3: At Sea
As you cross the open ocean toward the Falkland Islands, albatrosses, petrels, and numerous other seabirds accompany the ship. The vast expanse of the sea, the constant interplay of wind and waves, and the first possible sightings of marine mammals make these days an intense and inspiring introduction to your expedition. Onboard, the international expedition team provides fascinating lectures and background information to prepare you for the upcoming landings.

Day 4–5: Falkland Islands
The Falkland Islands captivate with their wide-open landscapes and extraordinary wildlife. Depending on weather and regulatory conditions, you explore various islands with their rich bird colonies and penguin populations. You encounter rockhopper, Magellanic, and gentoo penguins, black-browed albatrosses, and numerous other seabirds. A visit to Port Stanley provides insight into the unique character of the islands, where South American influences blend with Victorian architecture, creating a special atmosphere.

Day 6–7: Crossing the Antarctic Convergence
As you cross the Antarctic Convergence, a fascinating natural phenomenon occurs where cold Antarctic waters meet warmer currents. This nutrient-rich area attracts a remarkable diversity of seabirds and marine life. Albatrosses glide majestically over the waves while petrels and other seabirds add dynamic movement to the air. With a bit of luck, whales may be spotted in the distance as the ship continues toward the sub-Antarctic islands.

Day 8–11: South Georgia
South Georgia greets you with dramatic mountains, massive glaciers, and an incredibly dense wildlife population. Along the coast, you experience large colonies of king penguins amidst snow-capped peaks and tussock grasses. Elephant seals and fur seals rest on the beaches, dominating the landscape. A visit to the historic whaling station at Grytviken offers insight into the island’s rich history and provides a striking contrast to today’s protected natural environment, making it an unforgettable part of your journey.

Day 12: Sailing South toward the Antarctic Peninsula
Leaving South Georgia behind, you continue sailing southward. As the ship moves into colder waters, keep watch for seabirds and marine mammals accompanying your journey. The anticipation of entering the icy world of Antarctica builds with each nautical mile.

Day 13–16: Antarctic Peninsula and South Shetland Islands
The Antarctic Peninsula reveals itself with colossal icebergs, rugged cliffs, and breathtaking stillness. Depending on weather and ice conditions, you make landings and Zodiac excursions along the coastline and islands of this spectacular region. You navigate through impressive waterways such as the Bransfield and Gerlache Straits, exploring locations like Paulet Island and Brown Bluff. Here, you encounter Adelie, gentoo, and chinstrap penguins, as well as various seal species, while fin whales and other large whales may appear in the nutrient-rich waters. The combination of monumental landscapes and vibrant wildlife makes these days the highlight of your expedition.

Day 17–18: Drake Passage
On the return journey across the famous Drake Passage, albatrosses and petrels once again accompany the ship, providing continuity and a sense of connection to the wildlife you have come to know. As the ship cuts through the waves, you reflect on the extraordinary experiences of the past days. Lectures and discussions onboard allow you to consolidate your observations and deepen your understanding of this remote and pristine region.

Day 19: Arrival and Disembarkation
Finally, you return to Ushuaia or Puerto Madryn. With unforgettable memories of at least six penguin species, numerous seals, seabirds, and the stunning landscapes of the Falkland Islands, South Georgia, and the Antarctic Peninsula, your 19-day expedition concludes, leaving you with experiences to treasure for a lifetime.

Further information: The duration of the trip varies between 19 and 21 days, depending on the chosen route. Embarkation and disembarkation take place either in Ushuaia or Puerto Madryn, depending on the tour. Certain activities like polar diving and bird watching are only available on selected trips.

Photo Workshop

It's impossible to fully describe the experience of visiting the polar regions. Fortunately, photography workshops will help you add incredible photos to your poetic descriptions. On selected trips, professional photographers will help you get the best pictures out of your personal camera equipment during free photo workshops. One part of the photo workshops takes place on the ship, the other in the field. The part on board takes the form of exciting lectures that familiarize you with your camera equipment and the basics of photography. The practical part takes place during the excursions, where our guide photographers will help you practice your photography skills in real polar conditions. You will need to bring your own camera equipment. If you wish, you can bring more than just a simple camera, but bear in mind that you may have to carry your equipment over long distances. In addition, the photographic equipment must fit safely on our Zodiacs. Participation in the photo workshops is free of charge with a request to book a place in advance.

Kajaktour

An unforgettable excursion on the water - on a guided kayak tour you can explore lesser-visited places and experience nature up close. Discover wild animals and get up close to the Arctic wilderness. From the water, you have a unique view of glaciers and passing ice floes. In addition to sufficient physical fitness, you should also have paddling experience in a sea kayak. Participants do not need to be able to perform an Eskimo roll, but must be comfortable in a kayak in various weather conditions.

Polar Diving

Diving in the Antarctic is an unforgettable and unique experience. However, you must be a very experienced diver to book this activity. Experience in diving in cold water and dry diving (at least 30 dry dives) is required. Before departure, you must present an internationally recognized diving certificate, the diver's logbook (copies must be attached when filling out the Diver Personal Information Forms), and a statement from your doctor (not older than two years) certifying that you are in sufficient physical health to dive. Please note: There is no decompression chamber and medical care in these polar regions is almost non-existent. Although there is a doctor on board the ship for first aid, no risky ventures are accepted from divers. If the dive leaders feel that the diver does not have the necessary experience, they may exclude the diver from the dive program (this decision is made for your own safety). In this case Oceanwide Expeditions cannot be held (financially) responsible and will not grant any compensation claims. All divers are obliged to follow the instructions of the dive leaders and guides at all times. All participants dive 100% at their own risk; this is also the case during the shore excursions. The trip begins with a test dive so that all divers can get used to the cold water and try out their equipment and the number of weights required. Before each dive there is a briefing about the planned dive site, the weather and ice conditions and the course of the dive. The dives are carried out according to a buddy system. There are no dive guides in the water to accompany and guide you. The guides will remain on the surface for the safety of the divers and will "check in" and "check out" the divers after each dive. Divers must be able to read their compass and depth gauge and look out for each other to ensure a safe dive. The following items are provided on board by Oceanwide Expeditions:   Compressor: On board we have a Bauer compressor (200 liters), 35 steel cylinders of 12 liters each (200 bar), with DIN and Yoke compatible connections and two separate outlets. This allows the attachment of a primary and secondary safety regulator so that in the event of a malfunction or freeflow, each regulator is independently isolated.   Weights: You will receive hard lead weights and a belt. We do not have foot lead or any other equipment rental on board. Important personal clothing and equipment that you must bring with you: - Hooded dry suit - Thick and warm underwater clothing (2 pairs), dry gloves or appropriate thick wet gloves (make sure these keep your hands warm in water temperatures below freezing) - 2 separate, frost-proof regulators, as we dive with special bottles with two outlets. We use 12 liter steel tanks. They are equipped with a "Y" or "H" valve configuration, with DIN or Yoke (INT) compatible connections. - Pressure gauge - Buoyancy compensator (BCD) with quick release - divers without a BCD who rely solely on their dry suit for buoyancy control will not be allowed to dive. - Depth gauge, watch or computer - compass - Knife and a flashlight - Mask, fins and snorkel - Weight belt (hard lead weights are available on board) Please check all your diving equipment before departure. Containers for equipment storage are provided.

Long Hikes

Long hikes are for groups of 24 passengers maximum, accompanied by two armed expedition staff and a Zodiac that will sail ahead to watch for polar bears along the shoreline. Passengers who join this activity should have the willingness and ability to walk at least 15 km (9 miles) in semi-rough terrain that includes shorelines, tundra, low hills, and river crossings. Walks will take around six hours from start to finish, rest times included. We will walk at a modest pace and not cross any alpine terrain. Passengers who do not take part in long walks will have a landing in the morning at the start point of the walk, then sail to the end point of the walk for their second landing in the afternoon.
