Itinerary: Arctic Ocean Expedition
Day 1: Sights of the Granite City
You arrive in Aberdeen, the "Granite City," known not only for its impressive architecture made of gray granite but also as a frequent winner of the "Britain in Bloom" competition. This city, which surprises with its blooming gardens and parks, marks the actual beginning of your journey. In the surrounding waters, you have the opportunity to discover several whale species, including the majestic orcas that are native here. If you look south, you catch a glimpse of the lighthouse on Girdle Ness, an impressive structure designed by the grandfather of the famous Scottish writer Robert Louis Stevenson. Stevenson, who gifted us with unforgettable classics like "Treasure Island" and "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde," left another legacy with this lighthouse. During your time in Aberdeen, more passengers will join your journey, increasing the anticipation for the upcoming experiences.
Day 2: Birds, Seals, and World-Famous Knitwear
On Fair Isle, one of the remote islands of the Shetlands, you will be warmly welcomed by the approximately seventy friendly inhabitants. This small community is internationally renowned for its intricate knitwear, crafted with great skill and tradition. During your stay, you have the opportunity to participate in a leisurely walk to the local bird observatory. This site is a true paradise for seabirds, which can be seen here in large numbers and variety. With a bit of luck, you may also spot the impressive grey seals, which often frolic along the coasts. The combination of fascinating nature and the warm hospitality of the islanders makes this visit an unforgettable experience.
Day 3 - 4: Jan Mayen Marine Life
Course northward to the Norwegian island of Jan Mayen, located about 300 nautical miles northeast of Iceland. This journey takes you through the fascinating waters of the North Atlantic, and although you spend two days at sea, there is no reason for inactivity. Take the opportunity to explore the vastness of the ocean and keep your eyes open for the impressive water spouts that may suddenly appear from the sea. These spectacular sights are often the harbingers of the majestic marine giants that inhabit these waters. With luck, you may witness the arrival of a minke whale, fin whale, orcas, or even a blue whale. These encounters with the fascinating marine world are impressive moments that make your journey a special experience.
Day 5: Snow-Capped Volcano by the Sea
Jan Mayen is a barren volcanic island topped by the snow-capped summit of Beerenberg. This impressive elevation, rising majestically to 2,300 meters, dominates the landscape and offers a breathtaking sight. From the slopes of this imposing volcano, broken glaciers protrude into the icy sea, giving the scenery a dramatic and fascinating touch. With permission from the Norwegian authorities, you have the rare opportunity to visit the weather station operated in this remote and rugged environment. Furthermore, you can hike to the remnants of a Dutch whaling station from the 17th century, hidden amidst the dense moss layer of this barren volcanic landscape. This hike not only provides insight into the island's history but also the chance to experience the unique flora and fauna of this remote region.
Day 6 - 8: Under the Midnight Sun & Along the Ice Edge
In the midnight sun, you sail along the sea ice edge northward, where you have the fascinating opportunity to encounter Greenland whales, hooded seals, polar bears, and a variety of seabirds. Observing these impressive creatures in their natural environment is an unforgettable experience. After reaching about 79° North, you change direction and head west to the impressive, rocky edges of the continental shelf of Western Svalbard. This region offers you excellent chances to spot the impressive fin whales. Additionally, near the glacier mouths of the yawning Svalbard fjords, you may have the opportunity to observe emerging minke whales. The combination of the fascinating landscape and the diversity of wildlife makes this journey a unique adventure that will stay with you for a long time.
Day 9: The Arctic Island of Svalbard
The Forlandsundet, stretching picturesquely between the main island of Svalbard and the narrow Prins Karls Forland, is a place of impressive beauty and fascinating wildlife that captivates every visitor. Here, with a bit of luck, you can observe the majestic walruses, sometimes leisurely swimming through the clear water. Alternatively, there is the possibility to sail into the St. Johns Fjord, where the pristine nature and the quiet expanse of the fjord exude a special calm. Another option is to head south to the mouth of the Isfjord, where you can land at Alkhornet. There, seabirds nest in large numbers on the steep cliffs, while Arctic foxes skillfully search for fallen eggs and chicks at the base of the rocks. In this rugged but fascinating environment, reindeer graze on the sparse vegetation, contributing to the unique ecosystem of this Arctic region.
Day 10: The End of the Journey in Longyearbyen
Every adventure, no matter how magnificent, eventually comes to an end. The moment has come for you to disembark in Longyearbyen and take the impressive memories you've gathered during this journey home with you. These memories will accompany you wherever your next adventure may lead. However, if you feel your explorer spirit is not yet satisfied and you long for more opportunities to observe the Arctic's most famous predator in its natural environment, then you have the option to stay on board.
