This Northern Norway husky weekend takes you to Finnmark, an Arctic landscape of forests, open plateaus and coastal stretches. Over four days you are not just a guest, but part of a small expedition. You will drive a dog sled for two full days and actively help with the dog teams, from harnessing to care in camp. Depending on weather and snow, the route runs through forest, across open high plateaus and along the coast. You spend two nights in the lodge in Børselv and one night in a traditional Gamme tent. Wind, cold and changing conditions are part of the experience and require initiative and stamina.
Northern Norway Husky Weekend in Finnmark, The Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival, Kennel, and First Ride
After pickup at the airport, you will head to the accommodation. Later you will meet the huskies, receive an introduction to dog sledding, and set off on a short tour. You will spend the evening with dinner and the first overnight stay at the lodge in Børselv. The travel services begin with dinner.
Day 2, Full Day on the Sled to the Camp
A full day on the sled leads, depending on snow and weather, through forest, across open plateaus and along the coast. Along the way there is an outdoor lunch break. In camp, you first take care of your dog team before making yourself comfortable in the tent. Overnight you stay in a traditional Gamme tent, where the group shares dinner and prepares for the next day.
Day 3: Continue the Journey and Return to the Kennel
After breakfast and the morning dog care, you set off again on a route that is chosen to suit the current conditions. You help with harnessing, preparing the sleds, and taking care of the teams before the start. In the afternoon, the expedition returns to the kennel, where the dogs are fed and rest after the tour.
Day 4: Farewell and Departure
Before the transfer to the airport, you will stop at the kennel one more time, spend time with the dogs, take photos, and say goodbye to the teams. Afterwards, you will continue to the airport. After breakfast, the tour services end.
Accommodation:
You spend two nights in a lodge in Børselv and one night in a traditional Gamme tent in camp. The camp night is simple and shared, with dinner as a group and preparation for the next travel day. The lodge serves as the base for arrival and the first night, and as a steady framework before and after the sledding days. The exact schedule on site depends on the weather and the daily routine.
Special features:
The group is small and participant numbers are limited. The tour depends on weather and snow, so routes and daily plans are chosen according to current conditions. Active participation is essential. You take part in dog care, harnessing and preparing the sleds, as well as camp routines. Transfers from Lakselv Airport on day 1 and back on day 4 are included. Children under 16 travel only when accompanied by an adult.
Additional Information:
The safety of our guests and animals is our top priority on all of our tours. The far north can have fluctuating and unpredictable weather with very strong temperature differences. Whilst we strive to follow the planned trails as closely as possible, we reserve the right to change the order of activities, the route of safaris, and the intensity of the excursions should the needs of our guests or animals necessitate it, or if the weather conditions compromise our pre-planned route. This involves both adjustments due to insufficient snow (meaning we cannot drive the sleds) or too much snow (snowstorms and extreme cold can cause accidents and various other problems). The required adjustments and fallback options in rare cases are based on the day-to-day conditions and can be compensated by shorter or longer daily stages, alternative accommodations, or even single day trips. In extremely rare cases we may organise alternative transport (ie. cars, quad bikes, etc). Feel free to contact us if you would like a more detailed assessment of this tour and travel period. Optional activities have very limited availability; we recommend booking them well in advance, often weeks or months before departure, as they may be fully booked by the time of travel.
