Husky Adventure Tour

This amazing tour is ideal for adventurers who are keen to learn the wonderful techniques of dog mushing. During the early part of the tour, you will be taught everything that you need to know about traditional dog mushing, before taking your own team of furry friends out onto the quiet training grounds and putting your knowledge and skills to the test! Starting on simple terrain, each day the trails will get a little trickier, meaning that by the time the tour has ended you will be competent at taking your team on a variety of different routes.

Husky Adventure Tour: Tour Itinerary

Please note that all itineraries are subject to change based on the weather and ability of the tour participants. In some cases, your guide may choose to leave for the camp early and spend three nights there instead.

Day 1: Arrival
After being picked up from the lobby of your hotel in Whitehorse around 10 am, you will head out with the rest of your group to do any last-minute shopping for the tour ahead. Then you will drive approximately 20 km south of Whitehorse to the Sky High Wilderness Ranch. After a light lunch, you will be able to meet your huskies, who will be very excited to see you! You will learn everything that you need to know about caring for your four-legged companions and looking after your sled and equipment. After that, you're off to your very first mushing experience! Take it easy! Your guide will be on hand to provide assistance as you get to grips with your sled and dog team. During the evening relax with a shower, sauna, and a delicious hot dinner. Stay overnight in the ranch lodge or cabins.

Day 2: Your First Full Day Dog Sledding Tour
After a night of refreshing sleep, you will be up early to greet your furry friends and provide them with breakfast. Sitting in the dining room for your own breakfast, your guide will run through the plan for the day which will include mushing through the Fish Lake Area. Listen to the soft crunch of your dog’s paws on the lonely, frosted trail as they pull you closer to your destination. Rewarding them for their hard work is the perfect time to create a real bond with these noble creatures. Overnight again at the ranch where a hot sauna will help unwind your body and mind.

Day 3: Through the Wilderness
Today, you will embark on another tour. You will witness impressive, rugged landscapes and the beauty of nature around Fish Lake. Wildlife is abundant in this area, so keep your eyes peeled! Back at the lodge you will feed and care for your hard-working huskies, before enjoying dinner with the rest of your tour group. We are sure that you will have plenty to recount from the day! Overnight at the lodge or cabins of the ranch.


Day 4: Husky tour along the coastal mountains
Your previous days of mushing will be a great experience today, as the trails here are narrower and slightly more challenging. The incredible coastal mountains are always at the edge of your vision, so be prepared for some breathtaking scenery. You will be back to the ranch in the evening, where you will be grateful for a shower and meal, before retiring for a good night of sleep.

Days 5 - 7: Pure Wilderness! Your Adventure in a Tent Camp
The greatest adventure begins today! You will make your way to the wilderness camp at Dry Creek or Coal Lake, where you will spend 2 or 3 exciting nights. Take your team deeper into the area around Fish Lake to the southern coastal mountains. There will be some incredible opportunities for great photos that day. Spend the night in a tent or a rustic cabin in the middle of the wilderness. After a good night's sleep, you take care for your dogs and prepare their food. After that, your breakfast will be served in the wall tent kitchen or trapper cabin before you climb the curves of your sled again. If the weather is favourable, your tour group will be traveling in a beautiful area far above the treeline of the mountains. Windy hilltops await the paws of your four-legged friends. Nights spent at Camp.
 
The third day in the wilderness will unfortunately also be your last day of the Yukon Husky Vacation. After a delicious breakfast with your tour group, your team will head back to Sky High Ranch. Let the beautiful, calm and infinitely wide landscape sink in before you leave. These are memories that you will not forget. You will reach the ranch around noon, where you can grab lunch and say goodbye to your dogs, who have led you through the wilderness so reliably. You will then be taken to a hotel in Whitehorse, where you will receive your musher diploma. Dinner is not included today!

Day 8: Departure
Enjoy a final night in Whitehorse before you begin your journey home, taking with you some incredible memories of your time husky sledding in the Yukon.

Accommodation
You will stay in rustic, traditional accommodation on this tour. For three or four nights you will be able to relax in the cosy, comfortable lodge or cabins of the ranch where you can enjoy a gravity fed shower and sauna. You will then spend two or three nights camping at the wall tent camp or staying at a cabin out in the untouched wilderness (shared accommodation). At the end of your tour, you will have a final night of accommodation at a hotel in Whitehorse before your journey home. Please be aware that the camps and wilderness cabin have no power or telephone and no showers or running water. A gravity-fed shower and wood-heated sauna are available at the ranch. However, it has outhouses instead of toilets, limited cellular service and no Wi-Fi. There is no electricity, so the lights and applicances are powered by propane. All meals and non-alcoholic beverages are included except for meals in Whitehorse (breakfast, lunch, dinner). The price refers to the accommodation in a double room.

Requirements:
Please be aware that husky sledding requires a reasonable level of fitness. This adventurous journey brings you closer to the natural, simple life in the far north. Go back to a time when dog sleds were used as a means of transport and there was no running water or electricity. Leave civilisation behind and immerse yourself in the life of a musher, where cooking together over an open fire, chopping wood and fetching water are part of the daily chores. You have to enjoy working with dogs and as part of a team. Dog sledding isn't just about standing on the back of the sled - active participation is essential. For example, you'll need to run alongside the sled or push with your legs to help the dogs up the hills or in deep snow. You'll also need to use your body to break and go around corners. Your daily assistance with feeding the dogs, cleaning up after them, and preparing straw for the night is also required. Before harnessing the dogs, you make sure the equipment is ready and checked.
While on tour, conditions can vary from sunshine and temperatures around 0 to -10 degrees to harsh weather with wind and snow and temperatures as low as -40 degrees.

The boots and high-quality outdoor winter clothing you will need during your trip will be provided on site. Please let us know at the time of booking if you wish to bring your own outdoor winter clothing with you instead.

The safety of our guests is our priority. The far north can have changeable and unpredictable weather. While we strive to follow our itineraries as closely as possible, we reserve the right to change the order of activities, the route of safaris, and the duration of excursions, should the weather necessitate it.

Special Dietary Requirements:
To ensure that any special dietary requirements can be met on-site, a medical certificate detailing all food intolerances/allergies is required. This should be provided at least three weeks prior to your arrival so that everything can be prepared for your stay. This is due to the limited space available for cooking and food storage.
