New Zealand’s South Island – Exclusive Photography Tour, Itinerary:
Day 1: Arrival in Greymouth
After your arrival in Christchurch, you will be personally welcomed. The journey leads across the wide Canterbury Plains and over Arthur’s Pass. Along the way, the first alpine winter motifs emerge: shifting clouds, snowfields and striking mountain formations. Several planned photo stops allow time to work deliberately with perspective and light. In the afternoon, you arrive in Greymouth and check into your accommodation. Later, you continue to the coast at Punakaiki. The Pancake Rocks provide ideal conditions for long exposures, structured compositions and working with surf and moving clouds in the evening light.

Day 2: From Greymouth to Franz Josef
After breakfast, you travel south along the rugged West Coast. In Westland Tai Poutini National Park, dense rainforest, river landscapes and glacier panoramas alternate. Selected locations are visited to create strong depth and clear visual lines. On site, Phillip Bartlett explains the use of different focal lengths and filters, as well as techniques for working consciously with changing light conditions. In the afternoon, you reach Franz Josef, where additional photographic opportunities arise at the transition between rainforest and alpine terrain.
Day 3: From Franz Josef to Fox Glacier
The day begins very early with a session at a quiet forest lake near Franz Josef. In calm conditions, reflections of the surrounding mountains and forest appear on the water’s surface. The focus is on clean composition, precise exposure and reduction to essential elements. After breakfast, you explore the Waiho River valley. The glacier-shaped valley structures, gravel plains and waterways provide ideal motifs for working with leading lines and scale. In the afternoon, you continue to Fox Glacier. Your accommodation is set within moss-covered rainforest, offering opportunities for detail, texture and macro photography. If conditions are clear, the last light of the day is used to photograph New Zealand’s highest peaks, Aoraki/Mount Cook and Horokoau/Mount Tasman.
Day 4: Photography Day at Fox Glacier
At dawn, you travel to Lake Matheson. The aim is to capture the famous reflections of the Southern Alps under optimal light conditions. The session focuses on precise positioning, composition and handling strong contrasts between snow, sky and water. After breakfast, there is an optional helicopter flight over Fox Glacier. From the air, extraordinary perspectives of ice formations, crevasses and alpine structures unfold. The flight is weather dependent and scheduled flexibly. The afternoon remains available for additional photographic locations in the area or for a focused image review session.
Day 5: From Fox Glacier to Twizel
After breakfast, you leave the West Coast, passing through Haast and travelling through Mount Aspiring National Park. Waterfalls, rivers and narrow gorges along the route provide numerous photographic opportunities. After crossing Haast Pass, the landscape changes noticeably as you enter the rain shadow region, characterised by open valleys and clearer lines. At Lake Wanaka and Lake Hawea, minimalist landscape compositions emerge, focusing on form, colour and reflection. In the Mackenzie District, you reach Twizel, which serves as a photographic base for the coming days.
Day 6: Photography Day in Twizel
The day begins before sunrise with a session in the Aoraki/Mount Cook region. The first light bathes glaciers, moraines and mountain ridges in warm tones. After breakfast, the next locations are selected depending on weather and light conditions. The region offers many remote motifs away from well-known viewpoints. The focus is on precise light assessment, image design and individual guidance. Time is also allocated for targeted image reviews and the further development of personal photographic style.
Day 7: From Twizel to Queenstown
A final morning session in the Twizel area precedes the journey south. Along the way, selected stops are made to photograph river landscapes, high plateaus and alpine transitions. In the afternoon, you arrive in Queenstown. Depending on weather and light, the optimal location is chosen for sunset photography overlooking Lake Wakatipu and the surrounding mountain ranges.
Day 8: Exploration Day in Queenstown
This day is intentionally kept flexible. You may explore Queenstown and its surroundings individually, focus on personal photographic interests, or use the day for rest and data management. Optional time is available for image review, backup and preparation for the upcoming days in Fiordland.
Day 9: From Queenstown to Milford Sound
After breakfast, you travel through Fiordland National Park towards Milford Sound. The Milford Road is considered one of New Zealand’s most scenic routes. Multiple photo stops are planned to capture valleys, waterfalls, alpine lakes and dense forests. In the afternoon, you arrive at Milford Lodge. After check-in, you explore the fjord shoreline, working with changing light conditions and cloud formations.
Day 10: Photography Cruise in Milford Sound
Early morning photography during the blue hour and first light along the fjord shoreline. After breakfast, you board a photographic cruise for a two-hour journey through Milford Sound to the Tasman Sea. Sheer rock walls, waterfalls and, with some luck, New Zealand fur seals or dolphins provide a wide range of photographic subjects. After returning to shore, you continue on to Te Anau.
Day 11: Exploration Day in Te Anau
In the morning, you photograph sunrise along the shores of Lake Manapouri, before returning to Te Anau for a late breakfast. In the afternoon, the group takes a private helicopter flight to a viewpoint within Fiordland National Park. From here, expansive panoramic views open across the surrounding mountain landscapes, offering extensive photographic opportunities. The group then returns to Te Anau by helicopter.
Day 12: Departure from Te Anau to Queenstown
The final sunrise of the journey at Lake Te Anau. After breakfast, return transfer to Queenstown for individual departure or an optional extension.

Weather Uncertainty and Photographic Opportunities
This photography tour is deliberately scheduled during the New Zealand winter, as weather conditions at this time of year tend to be relatively stable and the light is significantly better than during the popular summer months. Clear, cool air combined with snow-covered mountains and changing weather systems offers excellent conditions for dramatic imagery. Your guide, Phillip Bartlett, brings decades of experience and selects the most suitable locations based on current weather conditions.
As photography is the clear focus of this journey, early starts and longer drives may be required to take advantage of optimal light. Due to weather variability, route adjustments may occasionally be necessary. If conditions prevent photography, alternative activities such as post-processing workshops are offered, ensuring continued learning and productive use of time.
Questions and Answers
What can I expect photographically from the workshop?
You will work in some of New Zealand’s most impressive landscapes and have deliberately ample time for composition, light and creative processes. For sunrise and sunset shoots, we always arrive on location early, allowing you to photograph in a relaxed manner and without time pressure.
What level of experience is required?
The tour is suitable for all experience levels, from beginners to advanced amateurs and professionals. We provide individual support and guidance, offering personal coaching on location or constructive feedback after each shoot, depending on your preference.
What camera equipment is recommended for this photography tour?
We recommend bringing the camera equipment you are most familiar with, so you can fully concentrate on photographing and developing your compositions. For optimal results, we suggest a high-quality camera system, ideally a DSLR or mirrorless camera. A range of lenses – from wide-angle for expansive landscapes to a short telephoto for details – will help you capture the variety of subjects effectively.
Before the tour, you will receive a recommended packing list. Our photographer will also be happy to advise you individually on lenses, filters, tripods and other useful accessories.
What else should I keep in mind?
Due to occasionally cold temperatures, we recommend bringing several spare batteries, as battery performance can decrease in the cold. Sufficient memory cards and a personal data backup strategy are equally important. Please back up your files regularly to a laptop, external hard drives or the cloud, noting that stable internet connections may not always be available. Modern cameras generate large volumes of data, so a well-planned storage system is essential.
What clothing should I bring?
For changeable weather conditions, we recommend functional, warm outdoor clothing based on a layered system, ideally with several wool or insulating layers, as well as a waterproof and windproof outer shell. Sturdy, waterproof and warm footwear with good grip will provide secure footing on uneven terrain.
What level of fitness is required?
Good general health and an average level of fitness are sufficient. Occasionally, we undertake easy walks on natural trails or in alpine terrain with moderate inclines and uneven ground. Participation is optional, and alternatives can usually be arranged.
Can partners or non-photographers join the tour?
Yes, accompanying partners are very welcome and can enjoy the trip at their own pace or join selected activities as they wish.
